"like Borgia Italy but with corrupt cardinals and merchant princes." So Italy. 😂

    The magic is great.
It makes wonders, in the NARROW, spectrum of how it works.
Think of it like the Washammer's wind of magic.
You can do one or two thing, like commanding fire, or speaking with the dead, or controlling luck. But that's all.
It resolves the "quadratic wizard" problem, quite nicely.

i find from your description of the theme being serious but not gritty making me think of (ironically) Borgia on Netflix, particularly Cesare's story arc. He's right up there with Robin Hood and Edmund Dontez for antics, with a healthy dose of brutality and narcissism thrown in, like a corrupt Alexander the Great (depending on your historical opinion on Alex G.). Kind of a perfect fit for this game imo, I am going to check out 7th Sea. (p.s. jury still out if the other show The Borgias is as good...it will be hard to top the wild audacity of Borgia, which I am convinced is a dark comedy played straight, because some of it is so brutal or intense yet so over the top to scenes like my favorite moment in the series. "I will return to Rome for convalescence, and return to the campaign - when I am even MORE perfect!" and damnit if I didn't believe Cesare would reasonably believe what he was saying. sorry for the ramble

i can't say much about the gameplay but about the book
i have bought the rulebook (in german) a few months ago and i got to say it's quite annoying, that the first half of the Book is only information about the world, backgroundstory that's often irrelevant for the immediate game itself, a mini novel at the start and so much information about things that would be better in a second book or at the end of the book.
you learn how to play on page 183 of 300, the book is not well structured.
i had the feeling, that the Author rather tried to sell a novel than a rulebook
edit: don't get me wrong, the gameplay still sounds very interesting as a concept, especially in a roleplaying way and is quite novel.

Black Sails had a gay pirate captain, I did not see anyone say anything about that.

Sounds like an interesting game. Sadly, it reminds me that I cannot afford to buy every interesting game that comes along. In fact, I’m still trying to pick up used books from D&D’s 3.0-3.5 to complete my collection.

How does Elizabethan coexist with Napoleonic?

Badly to be honest, it's a pastiche of key notes from events inspired from a broad swathe of history

Your Humble Game Master is there a swashbuckling game that’s more consistent in its pseudo historic parallels?

Been eyeballing this game recently and very much unsure if I should get it -- it does sound really great, though it's more free-flowing nature and minimalized danger/failure makes it seem quite akin to Fate by with a thematic focus and an existent setting. And I don't know that that's a bad thing except that I already have Fate and have gotten pretty darn comfortable with it... I don't know, I could go either way. One member of my standard gaming group has a low-key obsession with pirates, though I think they would prefer some more grit. Which is probably possible to work into the game depending on how you implement some things... maybe? ... I'll probably get it at some point, just not sure when.
Meanwhile, the "yuck, forced adversity" folks are generally people you want to stay away from. Since even historically there was more diversity than is popularly accepted and depicted for most of the modern age, and _most_ European people weren't considered "white" for the majority of history. Including the Irish and the Nordic people, folks with incredibly pale skin tones but generally disliked or outright hated by the wealthy Anglos in Britain
