  • Riot confirmed that the changes to Viper (where she had reduced smoke duration) were unintentional, but apparently they have been in the game since Patch 7.09, or when Iso released.
    Also based on that tweet it seems like Viper will be receiving further balance changes in Patch 8.08.

      Dw that won't happen, Viper nerfs can be changed on durations,
      For Chamber, the get out of jail free card was just absurd in higher elo because trading matters a lot more there, being able to give a 1 man advantage and no trading in the highest of elo where everyone is so good at headshotting on sight and knows to take full advantage of a 5v4/4v3 and so one is so much.
      For Viper nerfs, let's say her power is at 7 right now, on a scale of 10, you can make it 6, 5, 4 because it's all decay and duration.
      For Chamber's teleport, it was just a scale of 1 and 2. One is can't escape to completely safe position, two is can escape to completely safe position, that was the two options.
      1 will make it a usually useless agent, 2 is meta changing overpowering af agent. 😭

      She is being picked on literally every single map. Only on Ascent is she not part of the main meta comp.
      Also, the other maps aren't much better.
      She used to be about 50% picked on Fracture, she was starting to dominate on Haven and she was dominant on Pearl.

    I think Viper is not that overpowered but the only agent to do the job as she does. The problem here is that Harbour is too weak and that leaves Viper as the only linesmoker. She is very good but maybe the other smokers are too weak (except Clove) because it remains the fact that smokes are mostly filled and not mained like sentinels, initiators or duelists at least for ranked.

      I disagree a bit viper just has one too many elements;
      - it’s not just a wall it decays
      - it’s not just a smoke it decays
      - it’s not limited uses per round
      - it’s can be turned on/off at will
      - orb can re placed them moved
      - molley doesn’t just damage it vunerables
      There’s very little downside if any and aside from knowing the set ups for the maps there’s not much to have to play around vs other controllers. Harbor/brim by comparison have good smokes but they are just smokes at the end of the day and when they are gone they are gone. A viper can deny info and fake presence and often just take space for free where it costs other controllers their util for the round.

    Tbh I find it kinda funny, that Viper for a long time after official launch was considered F-tier agent. Then Ixebox dropped, she finally got some niche pickrate. Got a little rework, etc.
    And now she needs another nerfs or soft rework, because she is meta defining agent with the highest pickrate. XD

    I understand the Tweet exactly like you but that's not possible, without knowing the bug yet me and my team recently played Bind and the normal A Lamps Viper Lurk was damn near impossible (and we noticed that ingame without knowing the bug yet) cause when I had Orb and Wall up the timing window was super close (which makes sense since it's 8 seconds max rather than the 10s) but before the recent patch we played tons of Bind Scrims in the last 5 month and never had any timing issues with that Lurksetup so it must be in the game since the recent patch, not patch 7.09

    Viper always gets nerfed from being OP when she was trash at the beginning of the game. I just hope they don't nerf her to crazy like the did with Astra to the point that's she's not even worth picking due to the amount of effort for no reward.

    Viper has util that recharges, blocks almost any sight line, can go up/down with little downtime, and punishes enemies for pushing via their hp, making them weak to spray downs.
    The big downside is the lack of flexibility that she has after she selects a location for her util, except the orb (minus some setups, which makes the orb unretreavable), plus the orb has to be thrown. Both of these downsides have been mitigated since launch with optimization of placement and effective setups. Not mitigated entirely, of course, but it's become very strong.
    I'd love to see harbor buffs. Viper could be taken down a notch in one of those ways she's strong or another, preferably in a way that doesn't harm her skill floor. I like the charges idea at face value because it reduces her flexibility but not necessarily her uptime. I'm interested to see what happens.

      Tangent, but I like the idea of thinking of the skill curve itself when considering a buff or nerf. Viper's skill curve seems to be too high somewhere in the middle, making her util extremely useful after a degree of proficiency. Chamber, I think, had too generous a skill floor in his time.
      Any consideration to nerf the skill ceiling of an agent should be done extremely carefully and to bring it in line with the others, no lower. Any agent that has util strong enough to surpass the fundamentals of the game at any level by more than an extreme minority of players should be dealt with.

    Its kinda rough if they nerf her to the ground bc this map pool demands viper in ranked for 2 maps(breeze and icebox) so i wanna see whats gonna happen to that if she gets chambered

      honestly, it genuinely seems like their approach is make the abilities less and less impactful so that it just becomes a gun game and the abilities are pretty much useless so comps and agent preferences no longer have an impact on the game, which is beyond the main purpose of a game like this.

Riot games are now just another one of the the fucked in the ass game developers like every other game dev today

    What i think you could change about viper for both comp and pro is the decay. Instead of having it do instant 30 damage and an accumulation of more, you could instead have only a set amount of damage done to the enemy and no more accumulation of the decay. This would probably add enough stall or punishment to the orb in comp, and the wall would stay the same, but she doesnt stay a pseudo sentinel.
    You can also increase how much harbor gets his wall or decrease how often viper can use her smokes in a game before they “break”. One of the strongest parts about viper’s kit is that it is so efficient with how the fuel works, just another fuel nerf would only hurt comp viper. So instead, have viper’s abilities deteriorate over the round so that every time she puts up her wall, it will go down faster and faster.
    For example, at the start of the round it might go up for 15 seconds, but the second time it will automatically go down in 12 seconds, 9 seconds, etc.
    This would deal with her efficiency in a pro play setting but it would still be enough for her to stay afloat in comp. i would also make sure to adjust harbor or add another wall controller so that the subclass can stay competitive.

    With the way pros play, the only way to balance here would be to reduce the decay amount or duration by a bit.
    Basically, pros know how to rotate fast, viper is chosen because she really punishes the opponents if they decide to push through her smokes.
    He orb smoke being bugged isn't so bad because it's not as useful as the line smoke, its main purpose is to provide opportunities by making the enemies move around it, doesn't need to be there for long.
    It's wht she's picked so much in ranked as well, it's specifically because we don't have good teamwork and her line smoke can buy us time to rotate. Or be used as a distraction to allow the team to attack the other site.
    And the. There's her ult which just makes it much easier to push people off the spike.

    pick rating as a reason to nerf/buff a agent has never really stood out to me as a valid metric to go off, an agent will always be picked more than others in a game where abilities and the usage of those abilities vastly different to other agents in the same category.

      She also has something close to a 60% non mirror (Viper on one team, but not the other) winrate.
      She has had close to peak Chamber pickrate for 1 1/2 years and ALWAYS had a higher non mirror winrate than him. It is insane that she hasn't been nerfed into oblivion yet if you actually look at her metrics.

    viper will have 2 orbs and 1 wall which is small like a harbor c ability which she can use with a kit like brim tablet
    and then its better as the functionality of her kit will be most balancing thing,
    as her wall can do like smoke 5-6 angles now but it shortens to 2-3 and orb can d0 2 at a time and she has to retrieve the orb in order to use it and
    to use it u have to face it to activate it like cypher cage

    Hot take, people bringing up "ranked" as a reason to not nerf her isn't good. As long as Breeze/Icebox (and Bind to an extent) are maps, Viper will always be viable. She will have her niche on other maps, but then she will be great on certain maps which is fine.

    im about to go on a bit of a tangent :P. also, im not a pro at the game but feel free to mention something i might have missed.
    If history has shown us anything between masters madrid and champions 2023, one way to balance an agent is not only to nerf the stronger agent, but to also buff their competitor. for example, skye vs gekko. skye was the second most chosen agent in champions 2023, but with the nerfs to her flash and dog + the buffs to gekko's flash and recalling his abilities faster, their pick rates became a lot more even for masters madrid.
    Another example is kj vs cypher. kj was the most picked agent in champions 2023, but with the constant nerfs she was getting along with cypher's trips getting buffed, their pick rates also ended up evening out for masters madrid. another reason for this could be due to how breeze is now in the map pool and kj can struggle a bit more there because of her limited range of her util.
    Another thing to mention is that the map rotations could also be playing into how viper is being picked more since larger maps like icebox and breeze need a line smoker.
    The only other competitor for line smokers would be harbor and his pick rate is comparatively REALLY low to viper's. so if viper was gonna be nerfed, harbor will need to be buffed in a way that can fulfill a purpose that viper can't. i think the comment in the video about having a locked # of fuel cycles could be good option since something that makes viper strong in pro play is how she can control when she can put up and down her smokes and communicating when others want them up or down is easier there then in ranked. this would make harbor's rechargable wall something more unique to him. also, maybe buff harbor to not slow his teammates with his walls. if viper's damage to teammates with her orb and wall can be removed, so can harbor's slow to teammates too imo. viper's ult also just feels stronger than harbor's, especially if u dont have a way to gather info and the viper play knows how to play around their ult. it can be a potent post-plant ult that is capable of lasting for an indefinite amount of time. maybe one way to nerf it is to buff harbor's ult? for example, if the stun from harbor's ult hits, it can reveal an enemy like how cypher's cam does when it tags someone. this, in turn, can act as sort of a counter towards viper's ult. just spitballing ideas ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I mean I am all for Harbor buffs and yea, the map pool favors Viper, but the issue with Viper is she is being played on maps she "shouldn't" be played on like Ascent and Sunset to a degree and having success there. It is one thing if you have a niche pick with varying degree's of success but Viper gets so much value on maps she doesn't necessarily need to be played or shouldn't, on which is the main point of people asking her to be nerfed.

      @@funkycrawler619 yea, i 100% agree with that, too. viper has become a very versatile controller for aggression and defense that she can act as both a primary and secondary smoke agent on every map. the controller meta feels like it can center around what controllers work well with viper. she can act as an strong anchor to a site for holding down one site with her wall and ult and her ult is especially useful for post-plant scenarios. i noticed that on the maps she was played on, even on the maps she shouldnt be good on, she was almost always picked with another controller, like omen and overall had great success (sometimes there was astra on breeze, but mainly omen) who just so happens to be the second most picked agent this championship. whether omen is also really strong might be a discussion in of itself, tho :P.
      i cant say for 100% certainty as to why this is the case, but it could be because since viper's wall is self-deployable that can recharge along with omen's smokes that are rechargeable unlike brim's, they can just alternate their smokes continuously to deny sites. and even tho harbor could probably achieve the same results on a site execution on attack with omen, he doesn't have as strong of site anchoring capabilities that viper has for defense or post-plant.
      there is one other idea i could think of to nerf viper, but it might be a bit radical... make her smokes last longer (for example, the orb and wall doesn't take up double the fuel and extend the time they can be up) but the fuel won't be recharged, sort of like the brimstone of wall smokers. this change would be similar to the astra nerfs where she has to play more conservative with her util and act more reactively. if she was on defense, she would have to save her wall for if she was certain the site she was defending was being hit or she would have to save it for retake and be conservative with her fuel if she was using her orb and snake bites to hold a site. if she was on attack, she would still be a strong site executor, but commiting to the site that she places her util on would be much more important.
      but then again, i don't think many people would like those changes XD. i remember that with the astra nerfs, people thought she would become completely unplayable in both pro and ranked

      My suggestion for Harbor buff would be like a rain drops in car window if enemy goes through the wall. They could last like 1-2s and that drop movement could block vision very lightly. But it would penalize going through the wall without utility and those moving rain drops could mislead to shoot. It would act more like Viper decay dmg but just blocking vision and giving false movement where to react.
      His ult also needs something. Instead of stun it could suck like Astras C and make vulnerable brief moment.

    I feel like a viper nerf isn't needed, but instead more love for the other smoke characters (buffs or reworks). Esp after her ult was nerfed, she's in a good spot right now of being balanced, and the maps currently out also happen to include ones where she is a must pick due to harbor being...harbor lol

      The only guarantee to challenge her wall is Kay-o, but there isn't anything that they can add that can challenge the wall as long as the current fuel system is the way it is.

    Viper is played in ranked mostly on Icebox and Breeze, where wall smokes are must have. I doubt that significant Viper nerfs will make the Viper not picked anymore. Nerfs will make Harbor more viable choice

    I think her recharge rate could get lowered to make her nor as dominant over time. She's the only Controller that can sustain her smokes consistently over a long period of time, which is what makes her so dominant. All other smokes are burst utility, meanwhile her smokes are sustain utility. If you reduce how fast she gets those smokes back, reduce how much she can sustain.

    They are butchering viper in ranked in the name of balancing her for pro play, she is already only viable on breeze and icebox in ranked, and nerfing her more would just make her even more unplayable. But i guess riot does not care if she is unplayable in ranked, they only care about her pick rate in vct.

      Cope, I guess. Something has to be done to Viper, I'm afraid. 78% pick rate, with a 100% pick rate in double controller comps. Harbours only chance to shine is alongside Viper, and never as her replacement since she does the job so much better, it's incomparable.
      Seriously though. Whine all you want about "riot only cares about vct" you're crazy if you think viper doesn't have the meta in a chokehold.

    I’m kind of annoyed as a former hardcore viper main, and person who usually fills and is always forced to play smokes. When I play viper I always see/feel such a huge difference from what she used to be, and it’s incredibly annoying to think “wow older viper smokes would have lasted longer.” Its so bad to the point where I despise playing her but still am forced to since harbor is $hit, and for breeze and icebox you need her. She has become an unenjoyable character to play, and I hate how she will get nerfed to the ground all thanks to pro play. Feels like a cycle since viper was originally the worst smokes character, and now we are reaching her original version again with the constant nerfs.

    Dropping a gun randomly when she ults. Counting death on every ult uses so destroys your kda unlike phoenix ult.

    Listen, I understand Viper CAN be a bit OP. But if you're in unrated 24/7, it becomes increasingly difficult to play her if you're not with a team that cordinates. The only reason she's good in PRO PLAY, is because they Cordinate. And as someone who's mained Viper, heres what I suggest they could do to acctually nerf or rebalance her.
    Like Gekko Blind/Dizzy and Chamber TP, Picking up your smoke orb will take a 10 to 15 second cooldown, and you can only pick it up if it's not Deployed. The reason why is because I've seen alot of plays where she deploys it, picks it up mid smoke, and escapes before the smoke finishes.
    To Nerf her wall, instead of duration or distance of the wall, might I suggest a rework? If anyone has played R6, you would know about observation blockers. Change her wall to act like that, with immensley decreased range, but more manuverability with the posibility of changing her wall location by picking up these smaller ones since its not one huge wall that splits site and goes through walls. Plus give her 2 aditional buyable ones, and she can hold multiple site entrances. This would make it so that the wall doesn't feel like its useless, but it wouldn't also be cutting long areas like slicing a cake in half. And if they think its still op, have it act like a cypher cage or astra star where you have to look at it or somthing to just activate it once.
    Her mollies are fine as they are, because it really only assists in pusshes or gets kill via post plant.
    Her ULT has been nerfed so hard, theres not much to do to really counter ballnce, beside putting her ult orb to 10, or reducing the time outside up even more. Please don't do this, Im joking, because her counters are there, just need to play the cards right.
    As for her overall durration, I think it's fine as it is, due to how long the recharge speed is.

    Nerfing Viper is gonna be really tricky tho; She's really dominant in pro play as a secondary controller, but honestly not too good as a solo controller. From what I've seen throughout the years, changes to Viper has always been *a small nerf* to her role as a secondary controller, but *a significant one* as a solo controller. While we can see how dominant she is in pro play, some could argue that she's barely viable on ranked as a solo controller, especially outside Breeze and Icebox.
    So the problem is how can they make Viper a lot weaker as a secondary controller, while still maintaining (or even increasing) her strength as a solo controller. Personally I have no idea how I would fix that.

    I have a suggestion how to make viper less dominant in the meta there’s only one thing riot can do, revert chamber nerfs in 5.12. Chamber will be meta again so we will go from double controller to a double initiator. Problem solved with viper.

    Viper is a suedo sentinel IMO, her ability to stall a push is too strong, the decay combined with the smokes/wall then add a molley, that also vunerables…these are all things that would require other agents to combo to get the same effect. No one is walking through a viper orb/molley, plant denial is so strong too. The ult is great too. No down side really. Stack this up against Sage who is meant to be a stall agent, wall is easily countered if enemy team is smart. Heal is pretty weak now vs Skye. Slow is ok but no a damaging effect and needs to combo to be super high value. Res is good sure but arguably not a round win condition like a viper ult could be if you get it off. Just doesn’t compete to be frank.

    Viper just does too many things better than any other agent.
    She is the only controller with asymmetrical smokes (only Astra with her recalls has a little bit of that ability) where she can control when they drop and they only decay enemies.
    She is the strongest site anchor controller in the game.
    And, at a pro level, she basically wins utility trades by default since smokes going up require a response from the opposition and there is no agent that can respond to it in kind other than Viper (either it's a longer cooldown ability or a 1 time use ability).

      @tmoe_ow2523 I feel like shortening the gas again makes her worse than the wall not decay but that is just my opinion. Her wall and orb only last 8 and only 12 sec by themselves. If you make it 10 sec you have 3 sec to get on spike or it's not up long enough for a defuse

      Yes but that's the point. The main reason she's strong is because she's so good on attack for info denial while ALSO being good on defense for stalling power. If they take away the decay she'd still be strong on defense just a little worse and she'd still be OP on attack which is the main reason you pick her over a sentinel/initiator/duelist. No other controller or any agent can deny that much info. And if they remove her decay she's still good on defense cuz smokes and mollies are good on defense.@@msposite

    I don't think viper needs a nerf, if anything she needs a buff. But what would really make sens is to either buff harbor to make him as viable as Viper or to have a new line controller that has other good abilities. Viper isn't strong, she is just the best at line smoking. Which isn't hard if there are only two line smokers.

      Viper has a higher non mirror (Viper on only one team) winrate at a 75+% pickrate than peak Chamber had. Even if teams are trying to counter her, it just doesn't work.
      She is insanely OP because of her fuel which means no other agent in the game can trade fairly with her utility going up, she always has her's ready before the opposition does again.

    I think the best change that can be made for viper is making her fuel non rechargeable. Give her more fuel or have her smokes use less fuel but make it non rechargeable. That increases the skill ceiling and floor of the character and makes it so she can't always have smokes up. Fuel management becomes important then.

    Viper isnt viable as solo smoker on maps beside icebox and breeze. I think it is completely fine to nerf her. (im a smoke main who now plays omen, viper or clove.) If viper is nerfed then you might actually see more habour out there which i dont think is bad.

      Buffing Harbor isn't enough though. The problem with viper is her smoke uptime far, FAR outstrips any capability he has. "Buff harbor, leave viper alone" doesn't solve the problem. Harbor will never be as good as viper in her current state.

    Riot just making games for few players who play tournaments. Us casual players are nothing. Personally speaking cypher was ok. But after no-one picked him in pro-play they buffed him.
    Same as a solo controller viper is still weak. But after VCT pick-rate they will nerf her.
    Viper needs buff like she can pick her wall after 30-35 sec. Many time I use wall for entry after entry it’s usless & if used as cover then it will hard to go into site.😢
    They think we should play perfectly with totally strangers with unknown play styles.
    Evan 5stack players play casually not hard core like pro. (Including my 5 stack) so we can’t play like pro. Thats the fact & riot want we can change that.
    Valorant is just hobby for us not full time we have our job/business. We can’t do it like pro players with daily 12-13 hrs. Practice
    But who we are talking about game company who can’t fix voice chat issues over month.

    Viper balance Idea:
    Wall: make it recallable but put a 40s timer before able to use the ability again.
    Orb: same with the Wall
    You need to be close to the ability/s to be able to recall it.
    =
    -Problem with Wall is that you can't use it in another bomb site once it's used in one.
    -Both abilities are super strong, they can block vision and decay enemy's health. So there gotta be a drawback in reusing these ability/s in another area. 40s seem reasonable since 1 round is 1 minute and 40 seconds.
    Molly:
    Revert molly damage before they nerfed it.
    Remove 1 Molly.

    - making molly decay makes her ability feel like the rest of her kit.
    -her other ability's inflict 30 decay and pairing it with 2 molly is so annoying for her enemies. ex: 2 mollies + orb lineups in post plant and Mollies + Vipers Pit.

Viper's meaningful smoke uptime is already pretty bad (13 seconds tops on a single choke), so removing the lethality of molly would make it much easier just to rush her down on timing alone. Also, giving her only one doesn't really make sense - Brim, Clove, and Omen have incredible guaranteed value in their stopping power, while Viper simply makes a fight potentially more favorable for her. This is the same reason why Iso has two vulnerables instead of one, and why Raze only has one nade.
      Also, I hope that the timer only applies when you recall the wall, as removing her smoke timings invalidates her entire kit. 40 seconds is a bit too long as well, as no other agent has that harsh a re-call time on their utility. You could make it so that you can only recall the wall from where you tossed it, much like your orb, and you can't recall it at round start.

    Make viper's fuel recharge only when it hits 0. That way u can still stop your smoke at any given time but u will have less time to do it. After the fuel hits 0 u will only be able to use your smokes again after it is back to 100
