    In 1994 I used to work in a mansion doing cleaning and other maintenance stuff making $7 per hr. The couple that lived there had two 600 SL's one silver the other red.
    One day, the woman had a DUI arrest, and got her DL suspended, the husband changed my cleaning duties to become her personal driver. Me a 24 year old guy from driving a beat up 85 Honda CRX to a 120K red Mercedes every day, even they allowed me to take the car to my apartment at night and weekends for the next 2 years and still making 7 bucks per hour LOL.

      Personally, I think Mercedes peaked in 2018. AMG cars are hitting peak power whilst sounding amazing! Exhausts are over the top loud, popping and cracking on up/downshifts. The are fast, loud and clinically obnoxious in a way that makes muscle car owners green with envy.
      From here, we will be going to hybrid vehicles, small-displacement engines boosted by electric motors. The next step is an all-electric lineup.

    • @wernerbloemwagen6878
      @wernerbloemwagen6878 4 года назад

      Actually 80's opulence - this car came out in 1987 - but yes totally agree with you - magnificent car even today (except for the fuel "economy")

    • @wernerbloemwagen6878
      @wernerbloemwagen6878 4 года назад

      @Ike N : thís car was developed ánd engineerd in the 1980's when the Mercedes-Benz Engineers still ruled the roost ánd before the horrendous fiasco of a "marriage" between Daimler - Benz AG and Chrysler took place which, in the 90's, led to the worst decline in quality, engineering and reliability EVER for Mercedes-Benz cars. I know thís, because I've owned three E-class cars so far : two of them from the 80's and one from the 90's : my 1997 E230 auto never stopped breaking down.
      The W124 even fared better than the W210 in crash testing whilst the first C-class (early 90's) only got two stars in Euro NCAP while its forebear, the 190E was as safe as the W124.
      So yes - most of its sales took place in the 90's, but its development was done before the cost cutting bean counters of Daimler Chrysler started to do their "magic"
      The 80's was the last decade in which the Engineers and not the accountants, had the final say.
      Just look at how many W123 & W124 cars are still around compared to the W210.
      So no, the 90's was by far not the best decade for the 3 pointed Star in terms of design, engineering, reliability and timeless beauty (eg. W126) like the 80's was.

    • @wernerbloemwagen6878
      @wernerbloemwagen6878 4 года назад +1

      @Ike N : I do not agree with you one bit - the huge slide came as a consequence of the fiasco of a marriage between German Royalty and an average American manufacturer - how can a top quality manufacturer join forces with a middling American - that is preposterous! If at least they joined forces with Cadillac I could still see the merit & logic behind it.
      The only party which benefited was Chrysler : the Cross Fire was a Benz except for the body design and the badges.
      Ánd you cannot for one second argue that the 80's wasn't the golden decade for Mercedes-Benz : before the bean counters started to dictate the process of developing a new car.
      My W123's and W124 had no problems whatsoever, whilst my W210 NEVER stopped giving me problems : FYI - the engine was the ONLY thing that never had any issues. The rest of the car never STOPPED having issues. Everyone calls the W123 the Million Mile Mercedes as testiment to their reliability and longevity as Taxi's all over the Globe.
      So don't you be so presumptuous as to tell me, who grew up with these cars in the 70's and 80's drove & owned them myself through the 90's and 2000's, what a huge disappointment they were after thát horrific marriage between Daimler Benz AG and the Chrysler Corporation!
      At least the last 10 years has been a gargantuan improvement in all respects and aspects of their range.

      @@wernerbloemwagen6878 My 87 300E was horrendously unreliable. A laundry list of electrical failures. The transmission lasted only 100k miles. Engine and transmission mount failures. Just a poorly engineered car at its core. I've owned many vehicles from many manufacturers and my 300E was one of the most problematic by far. Not a unique experience either after doing research on the model. I swore off Mercedes after that. Such a money pit. My neighbor's 94 600 SL needed the transmission rebuilt at only 50k miles. Beautiful, but atrociously unreliable cars.

That's also why sports players like baseball and football players put black stripes on their cheeks to reduce brightness reflection into their eyes as they play.

    My God...when Mercedes was MERCEDES. These things were built to an impeccable standard. It was the car that commanded attentiom everywhere it went. The car you purchased when you "made it". Just behold the car even today, the shape and styling being remarkably timeless. Unfortunately, MB simply lost its way and allowed the SL to languish to its current afterthought form. While the 2003 SL500 may have started the MB trend of hyper-technology in the modern era, none of their cars touch this in terms of sheer timeless luxury.

    I have a 2001 SL600. Its not the fastest car, but its so smooth that when I first got it, I thought it had died when I was at a stoplight. I straight piped it and it sounds great now, but still kind of quiet and practically silent at idle. I think the 5 speed these got later on in production after 1996 improved performance a bit.

    Personally my 2nd favorite SL, especially in a bold single tone color like the red test car(the late 60's "Pagoda" is my fave). They kind of lost the plot with the next gen 2000's SL, styling was a breath of fresh air at the time but the built like a tank quality feel was gone IMO, it just didn't have that special old school Benz feel to it anymore.

    To me this and W140 with V12 engines are the peak Mercedes. Sure I appreciate the earlier models W123, W124 and 126 but these two were the last ones that were produced without cheapening out. Mercedes just wanted to make the best cars in the world and then came the rounded headlights era which wasn't so nice.

    • @klwthe3rd
      @klwthe3rd 2 месяца назад +1

      I agree with your entire statement. The later cars with the rounded headlights look awful. These were the last of the true Mercedes Benz when the engineers ran the company not the accountants.

      A V12 revs slower and its heavier. Also S63 AMG is faster than S65 AMG too, its the same logic. We love V12s, everyone do. But its not really the sportiest engine. Its much like a cruise engine and fast from roll not standstill.
