This video is for the patient with kidney disease and dialysis is in your future. You are a new dialysis patient.
This video is also for the new dialysis nurse and tech, to get an idea of what a day in the life of a person on dialysis is like.
I want to give you all a kudos for being here. Dialysis patients are some of the most resilient people I have ever met.
And if you have kidney disease and are starting dialysis soon:
I know you have QUESTIONS and I know you have CONCERNS.
But you can STOP worrying because that's why I created this video.
I want you to be INFORMED. I also want you to be RELAXED.
So let's address YOUR CONCERNS about starting dialysis.
By watching this video about DIALYSIS education for the PATIENT, you will likely have a better understanding of what to expect at the dialysis clinic.
Let’s start simple.
There are a view things that I feel are universal at the dialysis clinic.
1. We will get your weight when you get to the dialysis clinic
2. We will your weight before you leave dialysis.
1. Your Weight will be in kilograms
3. We will check you blood pressure with one of those automatic bp cuffs, and the bp cuff will check your blood pressure every 30 minutes.
WOW! Those are 3 things that you can expect to happen at the dialysis clinic.
I hope you feel more relaxed already.
Let’s keep going.
1. The nurse will listen to your heart and lungs, will look at your legs for swelling.
2. The nurse will ask you the same questions every treatment.
1. Any fevers, chills, nausea, vomiting? (checking for infection)
2. Any shortness of breath?
1. Short of breath waling in here?
2. Any swelling
1. Checking for “fluid overload” how much water are you retaining.
3. There are usually more questions like:
1. Any medication changed?
2. Doctor or Clinic visits?
3. Any wounds?
4. Falls or injuries?
4. You will hooked up to the dialysis machine for a couple hours. The length of time will very based on what your provider orders.
Now what do you do while you are on the dialysis machine?
1. Watch TV, bring in your tablet to watch TV too.
2. Sleep
3. Watch us work!
What to bring: Blankets. Battery powered heated vest or blanket Dress warm.
No matter what the weather, the person on the dialysis machine will get cold.
From my experience, the number one immediate challenge for people while they are on the dialysis machine is that they are COLD.
There are reasons for this. But that’s future education.
You can do this right? I hope this video helped you with fear and anxiety of the unknown and starting something new.

Lindsey, I was wondering if you would ever be able to demonstrate an actual dialysis start to finish in time lapse mode? Would it be considered a breach? I realize the pt would have to consent & their identity wd be protected. I'm just curious because alot of procedures are on here for educational purposes. Plus, my dad won't let me accompany him...😂 Thanks, for these tips to newbies, it certainly simplifies this lifestyle change.
