This middle rule where it skipped a period was not a good way to do passivity but even the current rules I do not like. Sometimes it really can take over a minute of active preps and faints to get the right opportunity to attack or to get the other fencer to react in the way you want. Now I basically fence for 45-50 seconds like that but then if it gets close to the minute I just wait because I don't want to find the opportunity at 59 seconds go in and have the ref halt my action and give away my game plan. There are also many times where the fencing is very active with lots of back and forth just noone ends up scoring for like 40-50 seconds then the fencers realize wait my touch could be annulled because a p-card so they just stop and wait till after the timer. I understand they didn't like the no fencing in that team matchup but I would prefer something that didn't artificially halt the action in what could otherwise be a tense moment.

Also - the old rule was especially abused in team competitions!

sigh.. the rules are usually abused by someone in the top 10 of the world so rather than make them fence or something... we all get penalised ...
like vezzasli (i think it was) and the mask bib - rather than make her not fence in a mask with a bib that extended below the collar bone (or something lie that ) we all had to get damned masks with half the bib foil lame....
and here... rules abused by some of the top fencers... makes us all suffer.... sigh
