Sounds great as always, Bill! We're huge fans of Helix/HX Stomp over at Worship Tutorials. Praise and worship players love the ambient tones, but you take it to the next level :).
Hey thanks! And sorry I missed this comment. I know you guys are more focused on the big Helix, but do you find yourself adding pedals into the HX-Stomp (like me), or are you finding worship style patches that work with the HX-Stomp alone?
@@chordsoforion Hey! Using the snapshots feature, lots of guitarists are finding they can do their worship sets with the HX Stomp alone. There's even a few guys in the community that have patches available for just that!
I have the Stomp, and I've LOVED watching your journey to learn it. Its caused me to check out your other excellent material. I'll never be as complex as your sound genius that you regularly display, but you help me to be better. Thank you.
I know this is about the HX Stomp, but I'm reeeeeeally feeling that Timeline. I love the clarity of it! Great job on figuring out how to get the HX Stomp onto your board!
So easy for things to go crazy with these great bits of kit, really useful to hear how you maintain the richness without letting things get out of hand - sometimes less is more!
Thanks again, Bill. I have the HX Stomp on order and have the Sunset, Timeline and BigSky already. I tried the Iridium as my amp and cab sim. The sound quality and ease of dialling in a tone is great on the Iridium and it has a headphone out and built in room reverb. But without a stereo loop, you can’t run time based effects post amp and pre headphone output. So, it’s probably going back. Looking forward to watching more of your vids. Dan
Cool! Yeah - if you end up liking the amp /cab pieces of the HX Stomp, it could be a great solution for the way you are looking to use it. That being said, I l really really like the Iridium.
Such a nice tone! I really love to use similar tone in a psychedelic song! Amazing video, I really love to have one of those HX Stumps, but Unfortunately that's a rarity here in Iran (and if I could find that, I think I should pay lots of money due to economic problems we have). So, I have Helix Native VST, amp modeler and effect controller, not as good as hardware versions, but cool enough to do different crazy things and dial nice tones.
Now just add a boss es8 and control it on a level that will blow your mind. For example: wave functions for expression control (internal or external) for all your pedals with only one exp pedal or routing it to an onboard switch (ie: mute button), separate your od's/modulations to L/R stereo outputs or in parallel mono with the internal mixer, midi control everything on your board for an infinite number of patches, reorder and mix your pedal chain internally, 4ch method with the l6 will allow you to change the order of the l6 amps & effects with your outboard effects, global tap tempo, etc... it's been a game changer for me over the last 2 years. I'd also recommend an h9 because it's the most incredible pedal I've ever used. If not the es8 than a disaster area controller to bring up patches on all your pedals simultaneously... but regardless, that's an great looking and sounding pedalboard you have there!
I have been looking for a hx stomp / h9 MAX comparison (in terms of price, space occupied,effects/amp sim, available and future upgrades, on the fly/"studio" editing) but I haven't found anything on the web so far. Are these two pedals even comparable ? can you shed a light pleeeease!
@@hardcorewithin h9 max has better effects and future algorithms are free to max owners. The hx stomp has amps and ir's for direct, additional amps and effects not included will cost quite a bit in the l6 hub. From what I remember, the lowest priced amp pack was 50 bucks.
I love that massive noisy gain sound! You do need to be careful, but the result is very evocative. I enjoy using the HX Triangle Fuzz in this context with the sustain cranked.

I love my helix. So many people complain and stink up the place with pseudo tone snobbery but any modern processor can produce killer tone. Live your tone by the way.
I was going for a similar setup until the sound engineer handed me a full Helix to try. I brought it into the studio and within half an hour I found my sound. But I wanted the stomp so I could continue using my drives, big sky, and dd-500.
Hi Bill, Thank you so much for providing all this amazing reviews, tutorials and jams. This is such a great help and input! I'm wondering if you sticked with the Line 6 HX Stomp in the end or switched back to the Eleven Rack. I just can't see the HX Stomp in any of your newer videos anymore. Thanks :-)
Hi Nils- I still use the HX Stomp, but am still using the 11R and a couple of other amp modelers. In particular, as of late I've been trying to focus on the Headrush Pedalboard. @@chordsoforion Thanks for your quick reply. Okay that's great news. Just like you I'm looking for a compact stereo FX amp modeler to create an all pedal board setup. I read the manual and found nothing! Do you have any idea where the problem is? Cheers
Hi Bill! I ‘ m looking forward to experiment with an hx stomp. Please tell me , you use it live directly in the PA system or is there something between helix and the PA mixer ...a special DI or something else! I want to use only the hx stomp with few analog pedals for small gigs . Thank you so much
For small mixer/PA system, you can run the HX Stomp outputs into 2 line inputs on the mixer for a nice stereo image. On larger PA systems with a snake or extended cable run, I would probably run the HX Stomp into a DI box that can convert the signal to XLR. That being said the outputs are balanced if you use TRS cables.
Great Video!! Just a small clarification on signal chain- Comp-overdrives- HX stomp- fx send to modulation pedals and return to HX stomp and lastly HX Stomp to interface using cab and amp sim?
This is a wonderful overview. Since you have the Sunset going into the Riverside, you should hopefully be able to set Riverside’s noise gate to help manage the hiss from the Sunset. Have you tried that?
Very good Bill .. I assume the Ego, Sunset and Riverside are going into 'the front' of the Fender amp sim on the HX Stomp in mono with the Timeline and BigSky in stereo in the fx loop. Maybe try the noisegate on the HX Stomp to tame the hiss. Try a decent IR instead of the standard cab - makes a big difference. You should have enough blocks left. Much neater than my pedalboard.

Hey Dave: I don't play live at all! I spent many years doing bar and club gigs as a member of a prog-rock band, and I am not interested in going back. Too much time and energy! As far as the big pedalboards go, I am most impressed by the Headrush Pedalboard. I am (as I have mentioned in the Headrush Gigboard video) very biased towards it, since I am a long time user of the Avid Eleven Rack, which is the "parent" of the Headrush.
Hey, so I am seriously considering an HX stomp and I would like to implement it into my board and use both effects and amp capabilities on it, so Is it possible to put the stomp in the middle of my chain, having other pedals run after the stomp and have the last pedal come back into the stomp for only the "amp "? Desired Chain: Volume pedal -- > Jackson audio prism -- > Yara Compressor -- > Hx stomp(only effects) -- > Timmy -- > Scarlett love overdrive -- > Timeline -- > Bigsky -- > Back into the stomp(only amp) Thanks!!
As I said on the Gigboard demo video, I sent it back because the effects loop is mono, and the music retailers were advertising it as stereo. If they had had an accurate description, I would never have purchased the Gigboard in the first place.
Hi Mike, i can't speak for Bill, but i found i had problems with long reverb/delay trails being chopped off when the loop restarts if the looper is after the reverb/delay. I have it before now and i find it works well. Only a problem with long trails of course, and makes it harder to have different settings between your background and lead. Swings and roundabouts!
That's why it's good to have a looper that can be set to go; rec>overdub>play. Solves the problem. Wherever you want to put your looper is good in either case :)
that noise from the sunset - i experienced something like that when I added a wampler pinnacle deluxe to my chain after my empress compressor - it turned out to be the compressor before. when i turned off the distortion i noticed it there but the pinnacle enhanced it. might also be impedance
I use the original power supply, although one person (in this video's comments I believe) said that the Zuma will work. I have not yet tried it out to confirm.
I also do the tone nob trick for some solos, even for some heavy riffs, I normaly tune the E to D with 52 gauge string. Question , why don't swap the pedals for a Helix?
I guess the question is: Can the Helix do everything that the pedal do? Also, I sometimes like to twist knobs in the middle of a performance. Hard to do with these multi-effects units.
@@RoberNava Speaking from personal experience im thankful for all digital, let me mess around with pedals and settings i could never afford and helps you learn how they work so when you do want a real one you'll know what to look for and how it works. But even now i find i've fallen in love with certain delay's that are digital only(vst plugin) that i could never get in a pedal, so it becomes a matter of taste in the end.
@@mikejones-vd3fg I also use mainly digital, for the same reason, can't afford all the pedals. I use amplitube. A few years ago I had a BOSS ME-50 with amplitube for amp emulation. I sold that abd started to use a Digitech RP360 with a MXR Phase 90 and a PROCO RAT, but also had to sell that. I only have the RAT, but I want to buy a ZOOM G3xn.
Hey there! Have you tried out the Boss MS-3? I've been really into it, and your gripes with the HX Stomp reminded me of it since I had the same kind of issues haha.
I write atmospheric music. For years I thought I was rare ...mostly gigged with metal bands when I played drums. But I always ran to keys and guitar to experiment with my secret love of ambients. Years later after I lost last kit in Katrina Hurricane and home, I moved myself and kids to an apmt in GA. I saved up and bought keys after buying a guitar and teaching my son. 12 years later I bought me workstation and last year a strat. Well few months ago. Learning how to lead. My son is amazing. I suck. One day I hope to be half as good as my drumming. 30 years I beat those things. Passionate. I love them and all music but You sir are major sigh of relief. Thanks to RUclips I'm finding more that love ambient and atmo blues lol. Nice.
@@chordsoforion I grabbed a Zuma r300 with current doubler. It powered the Stomp perfectly. I used the voodoo labs line 6 connector and also a polarity reversal cable. No issues.
Hi, you should try using IR’s they make the amp sound more realistic. Trust me is night and day when you use an IR. Ownhammer and Celestion has been my favorites so far.
I am using the Strymon Zuma. Everything except for the HX Stomp is connected to it. I did have one person say that the Zuma would work with the HX Stomp, but have not tried it out yet.
I saw this and a few other videos of you using this pedal. a week later, i've got this pedal right in the middle of my board, going stereo out into a Roland JC-40 stereo amp.. and It sounds like a Billion dollars. thanks for the heads up on this wonderful, easy to program swiss-army-knife.
I think it depends on the length of your cable runs and the effects you are running through. I could be wrong but my thought is that the effects loop in the HX stomp is buffered anyway
In my case, the main outputs from the HX Stomp run into my audio interface for recording. If I were playing live, I would run the outputs to a pair of full range speakers.
I definitely like your sound, however I have to ask, with all the effects in the stomp, why not use the compressor and overdrives from the stomp and eliminate some real pedals?
You could, however, the HX Stomp has only 6 effect blocks. What do you want to spend those precious blocks on? Oh yeah - none of the onboard distortions come close to the Strymons.
Can anyone confirm if this is possible with the HX stomp: Guitar>HX stomp>pedalboard>amp>HX stomp>amp return AND second output with cab sim (to house pa)? Cheers.
I don't understand... I thought the line 6 HX does the timeline and Bigsky. What's the point of buying the HX if all it does is horrible distortions that 100$ or less pedals can easily outshine VS saving on 800$ pedals like the Strymon Bigsky and Timeline? To me the idea of the HX is to toy around with amps and cabs (lolz so dumb imo) but save you money on all the effects like distortion, trem, reverb and delays that are super spendy. Your setup is what, like 3,500$ or so outside of the HX, why is the HX even in there? Basically your review seems to say the line 6 HX does a horrible job at everything but amps/cabs, and I'd say 90% of my helix's amps/cabs are useless so why not just own the 1 or 2 real amps VS something that sounds decent but not as good as the real thing imo. I'm honestly at a loss here, you have a muli effects unit that says it sounds like a bunch of whats on your pedal broad, yet you don;t use it at all for effects.
The HX Stomp does not do the Timeline and BigSky - not even close. Nor can it be used to create complex effects chains, as it has only 6 effects slots. My use case for this pedal is to use it as a "brain" for my pedalboard to bring everything together and provide amp modeling and cab simulation. It works very well for me in that context. That being said, my amp/cab needs are very simple, as I use a neutral sound to build upon. A clean Fender tone running into a Marshall cab sim does it. Also, since I am all ambient guitar all the time, I am committed to NOT using amps for convenience, low volume and recording. I still own 4 amps, but never use them...
@@chordsoforion Interesting. Thanks for the quick feedback btw, figured I wouldn't hear anything. So this makes me wonder... I thought the patch for 2.8 said they have the Strymon Bigsky in there because it has all the same effects as the Helix, no? If the HX can't sound like the Bigsky, then in a way the helix offers almost nothing but mid range effects correct? I use a ampeg br2 bass head though a 1x15 and 4x10 ampeg bass cab. I have a 2 sided Whammy pedal, metal muff (EHX) and flashback x4 and T2 for reverb (both TC electronics)... The Helix sounds nothing like any of that to me. In fact line 6's distortions just through their version of a ampeg bass amp/cab is like a "2-3" on a scale of 1-10 when matching the sounds I get from my current setup. While I play guitar through a bass amp the Helix is not even close to replicating any of it. I'm trying very hard to find something to make life easier and cleaner sounding, I tried line 6 again and I find for every good thing it has there are 10 things in my way. So you don't feel even the Helix has reverb/delays that are on par with the Strymon? This is what made me look at the HX as line 6 says it has everything the Helix has and this covers gates, compressors, EQ, delay, reverb, trem for me while I can just add in my distortion and whammy... I'm hearing from you the HX and thus the helix can't really do that with the quality line 6 claims, correct?
Remember, everything I say is my own personal opinion, not an absolute statement. Other folks feel very differently about the HX/Helix effects and love the results that they get. The only way for you to determine if you like them is try yourself (which it sounds like you have done). Another thing you can do is head over to the Line 6 Customtone part of the web site and download patches others have made to see what they are doing with the device. Here's the area for the HX-Stomp: line6.com/customtone/browse/hx_stomp. Finally, if you have not seen my other videos of the HX-Stomp, you should check them out, in particular the general demo: ruclips.net/video/EZInxYo9RFo/видео.html

Hello. Long Time listener, first time caller. Why don’t you put the looper after your delay & reverb?
Do you use the original power supply to power the HX stomp or you use the ZUMA?
I use the original power supply, although one person (in this video's comments I believe) said that the Zuma will work. I have not yet tried it out to confirm.
What Kind of Power Supply for that Beast?
I also do the tone nob trick for some solos, even for some heavy riffs, I normaly tune the E to D with 52 gauge string. Question , why don't swap the pedals for a Helix?
I guess the question is: Can the Helix do everything that the pedal do? Also, I sometimes like to twist knobs in the middle of a performance. Hard to do with these multi-effects units.
@@chordsoforion yeah! I know, I also like that. Let's say for price and sound (leaving out performance) do think going all digital is a good option?
Nice.
Probably already asked and answered but...are you powering the Stomp with the Zuma and if yes, how?
No - unfortunately the HX Stomp requires too much power for the Zuma. I use the provided adapter.
@@chordsoforion I grabbed a Zuma r300 with current doubler. It powered the Stomp perfectly. I used the voodoo labs line 6 connector and also a polarity reversal cable. No issues.
Great! Do you use IRs on the hx stomp or do you find the stock cabs sufficient?
So far, I have been happy with the stock cabs.
Hi, you should try using IR’s they make the amp sound more realistic. Trust me is night and day when you use an IR. Ownhammer and Celestion has been my favorites so far.
is everything connected to the same power supply? what power supply are you using?
I am using the Strymon Zuma. Everything except for the HX Stomp is connected to it. I did have one person say that the Zuma would work with the HX Stomp, but have not tried it out yet.
@@chordsoforion Thank you
A comparison with the HX stomp bypassed would have been nice. Thanks.
Are you using the power supply that came with it or are you using the Zuma? Doesn't the Stomp require 3A?
Yes I am using the HX Stomp power supply. The Zuma does not provide enough power.
Glad you are liking the HX Stomp! Since you are running into a JC-40, I assume that you are not using the amp/cab sim on the Stomp. Is that correct?
Any buffer? And your thoughts on them, important or not really??
I think it depends on the length of your cable runs and the effects you are running through. I could be wrong but my thought is that the effects loop in the HX stomp is buffered anyway
I kept thinking you were about to play aulso sprauch zarathustra.
Hey man! Are you using a special cable to power the stomp with the zuma?
Have you tried to integrate the MIDI controls of the Riverside & Sunset?
How do you connect the hx stomp USB and not get that static noise?? Please help!!!
Your drive tone reminds me a lot of Devin Townsend's guitar tones!
FYI...The Sunset has a noise gate in it.
Your song sounds like the Mandalorian theme song!
Man, maybe you should patent this new Lego System... Just Kidding hahaha. I absolutely love this setup. Why don't you need modulations?
Not sure if he uses it, but he has a ton of modulation options in the Stomp.
Where is the sound ultimately going if the Stomp is used as a amp? Just a speaker?
In my case, the main outputs from the HX Stomp run into my audio interface for recording. If I were playing live, I would run the outputs to a pair of full range speakers.
Curious why you'd run the Sunset after the Riverside.
I don't always - just sounded good to me for this.
Slap a BabyBomb 30 on there & you have a full rig on your board.
i would need 2 for stereo, but yeah, that would be a strategy!
How are you powering the HX stomp?
I definitely like your sound, however I have to ask, with all the effects in the stomp, why not use the compressor and overdrives from the stomp and eliminate some real pedals?
You could, however, the HX Stomp has only 6 effect blocks. What do you want to spend those precious blocks on? Oh yeah - none of the onboard distortions come close to the Strymons.
Did the Strymon replace your TC Flashback?
No. I have had the Timeline and the Triple Delay for the last several years.
have you tried using the strymon to power the hx stomp?
Unfortunately, the HX Stomp requires 3A of power, which the Zuma will not do.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cool lead tone. Almost Eric Johnson-like.
How did you power the hx stomp?
With the power supply it ships with.
Never noticed until now but...you don't seem to make much use of modulation pedals. Just a matter of taste?
Totally a matter of taste. For me, a separate modulation unit seems a little over the top when combined with delays and reverbs.
Why not wireless? If all the information in the internet signal from my router can be wireless, why not guitar pedals and amps?
Why not indeed? Let me know what you think a good wireless solution is.
Can anyone confirm if this is possible with the HX stomp: Guitar>HX stomp>pedalboard>amp>HX stomp>amp return AND second output with cab sim (to house pa)? Cheers.
Alan Angel yes it is possible, just use 4 cable method, and set a cab sim routed to the other output, and go from there to FOH.
@@lucasvillaquiroz Great thanks.

But not the Zoom CDR
is the hx stomp powered by the zuma?
No. It has its own power supply. Requires 3 amps. Yikes!
You can power HxStomp with combining 2 output power from zuma, I read it somewhere 🤔
*stomptopus
With so many digital pedals, its strange that he doesn't take advantage of the midi capabilities of the set.
I do have MIDI out from the HX Stomp to the Timeline for syncing tempo. Beyond that, I don't really need it for what I do.
Hx stomp i pedalboear plus rimeligt interessante toner hist og her i videoen,
Too much going on... fewer options can be liberating
you don't need timeline and blues sky with line6
Which Line 6 device? There are definitely sounds that the Timeline and BigSky do that the HX Stomp does not.
Andre P cause you don’t need good tone
Surprised to see you use the Sunset *after* the Riverside… afaik, the riverside is "amp-like" so maybe better after the Sunset?
No wrong way, I guess.
