Jimmie Johnson's current performance will not tarnish his legacy and if he is still having fun despite his performance, I say let him be
Can’t really say is not a bit tarnished. His records aren’t and wont be. But there’s no doubt he hung around too long, then made another mistake going to Indycar to completely flop THEN coming back to NASCAR to ride in 25th all race. So yeah, his legacy took a few hits.
That is not say his career isn’t top tier. Just being objective here.
@@Squaler1265i respect him trying Indycar, but god get him away from a Cup series steering wheel.
I love seeing him out there you know he's a Hell of a mentor and Teacher with 7 championship and all them wins I love him with Legacy
Honestly, when Jimmie hasn't been getting wrecked, he hasn't really been far off Jones, Heim, and Nemecheck, (if we ignore Dover, that was a miserable one to watch).
It's LMC, two cars in the top-15 during the race is still an overachievement for them.
Now, if he was in the 48 and putting up those numbers, then there'd be an issue.
@@Squaler126525th? He hasn’t been that good all year.
Harvick? He didn’t stay too long, his team just fell off a cliff. Not his fault.
That is 100% down to the car. Not him one bit.
Harvick has shown it was the cars! The guy got more out of junk cars than all the SHR drivers combined!
Another driver I feel like is a good mention for this list is Kyle Petty. He said that he was ready to hang it up after 2000 to allow Adam to take the torch. When Adam died, Kyle drove the 45 to honor his son's memory. While a good thing to do, it really didn't help his career because over the course of 7 seasons he gradually fell off the pace, as did Petty Enterprises in general
The King loved racing I don't think it was ego he just loved the thrill driving fast.
people forget Petty didn’t win his last like 10 years lmao
Nobody’s gonna tell The King to hang it up. He left when he was good and ready.
8* years but you’re right
He was actually competitive up through 1987. 1988 was not without a bright spot or two, He finished 3rd at Richmond a week after the Daytona wreck and followed up with a legit shot to win at Pocono when he tangled with Bodine with about 50 laps left. He couldn't leave. He has said as much. Watch Petty Blue. In the film he laments not being able to step out and giving Kyle a fair shake with the family team. It is not a coincidence that Kyle was at his best with SABCO and the Woods.
Actually 8 years but close enough!!
Because his cars weren’t insanely superior to the competition any more…
I believe Terry Labonte was originally supposed to retire in 2006 and stayed around until 2014 despite not being competitive for his final decade
Nah, this is a terrible attitude to have. If they love the sport and enjoy themselves, they are welcome as long as they want. Anyone that literally doesn't want to see any of the elder racers are crazy. I'd love to see some of these guys have just one more race. Enjoy Jimmie while you have him
Several drivers drove for Petty Enterprises before the King retired. Even Ralph Earnhardt did. Bob Welborn and Bill Lutz drove the 43 before Richard when Lee expanded to two teams.
I thought of winner Pete Hamilton
@@Whathandleisavailable And I think Buddy Baker managed to get one or two for them as well.
@@Whathandleisavailable The superbird at the Daytona 500. Forgot about that.
@@waltwhite2534 Didn’t realize that. Just looked it up an he drove the 11 car for Petty in 1971. Got a win and 13 top 10s in the grand national series then moved to cup next year and won the 600. WOW.
@@kevinbrady8207 In 71 Grand National was Cup.
Mark Martin didn’t embarrass himself. He embarrassed the competition.
Now Darrell Waltrip? HE almost embarrassed himself…until he got in Dale Earnhardt’s #1 Pennzoil car to sub for an injured Steve Park. He had several very competitive runs in very decent equipment, and even re-established his friendship with the “Intimidating” team owner…
Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr & Bill Elliott are the 3 Drivers to have a Post NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Driving Career
That definitely would seem weird in other sports, but you can physically keep driving for longer if you can keep your skills sharp and stay in decent shape. Speaking of which, is Mark Martin in the hall?
You forget Bobby Labonte did I believe 2 full season in Euro NASCAR
I really feel like gordon, Johnson and Junior had many good years left. The injuries ultimately bit them all
Jimmie never got injured. That Pocono wreck was when he hit a brick wall and never recovered from it.
Las Vegas 2008 took Gordon out of his prime (except 2014) but even then he usually remained one of the most consistent drivers every week
You need to make a part 2 because there's plenty of drivers left off this list.
If Jimmie stuck around and got to learn the next gen, he’d do so much better
What did JJ do the last 3 plus years of his full time career? O WINS! Sounds like he would have done real great if he would have stuck around!
Martin was who I watched growing up. I liked the way he spoke, seemed humble. He would have had his Championship if it weren't for the chase format added on his year to win, changing things up. Via the previous years format (20+yr old format) he would have won the Championship in points. Anyway, just found your channel, great video, thanks for sharing. I look forward to more :) Subbed
I am 1000 percent biased, but Jimmie Johnson is 2 me not showing up because he thinks he still has it. He stopped thinking that in 2020, he keeps showing up because its fun, and his team is being sponsored because he is also gonna drive a couple races. Should everything post 2018 effect his legacy? Of course but i dont think it should tarnished one of the greatest dyanatys of any sport since 2000
If it’s just for fun, i’m sure he can find a ride in anything that’s not a cup car, and it wouldn’t have to be so embarrassing.
@@LOOKBEHINDYOUN0W I completely agree, but would you rather race a late modle car, or a Cup seires car? Jimmie has chosen the cup ride like most people probably would
Jimmie never won a thing without Chad. Anyone in that car could have looked like a superstar.
So his 2006 Daytona 500 win and at Las Vegas two weeks later because Chad wasn't on the pitbox
@@lonewolf2513 Doesn't matter, Chad set up the cars, he didn't need to be present. The same can be said for when Jeff won the first two races after Ray left. Those cars were already set up.
@@dangerzone24 your ignorance is showing
@lonewolf2513 lol OK whatever you say. You refuted a comment on the internet and have provided no supports but sure, I'm the ignorant one. Rather than hurl weak insults give us some supports for why Chad didn't have anything to do with his team for weeks.
Yeah, Jimmie wasn’t much before Chad, or after. He went to suck in Indy cars while Larson absolutely dominated in the car Jimmie couldn’t make the playoffs in. Jimmie was pretty good as long as he had the fastest car on the track, otherwise not so much.
@9:11 “Anything with an Engine”… video game reference?
The Labonte bros and Dale Jarrett are the first two that come to mind
Nice new room set up!and great video as always
My grandpa was the op amature motorcycle racer in the mid 1950s. He raced on the beach and the track at Daytona. One year he ran out of gas on the last lap, and still finished 3rd in his class. He spent most of his life running flat tracks and small dirt tracks around Ohio. We dont know when he stopped racing. He claimed he would retire at 60 after a heart attack and car accident on the way home from the track. He was just going to hang out at thw track and volunteer after that. His bike kept magically showing up at the track till he was 68 or 74. He never could take his boots off, but we never loved him any less. Grandma wouldnt go to the track with him after a while, so none of us really know when his last race was. Probably sometime between 2008 and 2012.
Terry Labonte. Raced from 1978 to 2014.
On the flip side, if any driver who didn’t hang around for a long time and probably left early unlike these examples: Rusty Wallace.
Love that Piplup plush in the back
I might be alone in this - but I think if JJ drives part time next year, he may actually be competitive. His last start was the most competitive he's looked since coming back (not that that's saying much).
Terry Labonte also kept racing backmarkers for years
That's a pretty neat background you got there
Geoff Bodine comes to mind as well
Lifelong Mark fan. He's the man.
Mark Martin is a Iron man to might be little but was and still is in Tip Top Shape one time bout 8to 10 other drivers tryed working out with him and they dropped out all of them 😂
Jeff Gordon ended his career on a very happy note. With Bobby Labonte and Gibbs, I don’t think he “lost” the ride. I hear he asked for out of his contract.
Bill Elliott and Darrell Waltrip wrecked their careers. They could have won so many more races if they stayed put.
JIMMAY has Stayed too long TBH.
Matt Kenseth is another example. At least for a while. I know he didn’t formally retire in 2017, but he should’ve, because the rest of his career from 2018-2020 wasn’t all that great.
Mark Martin was technically 9 years of retirement. (He did the speedweeks until racing season resumed).
He was runner up for championship many times
And hindsight is 20/20... usually.
And now his comment on Martin Truex Jr is no longer dates. As now martin Truex Jr has officially decided he is retiring at the end of 2024
That MTJ statement did in fact age poorly
Terry Labonte raced 11 more years after his final win.
Martin was good in the 6 car every year
Pete Hamilton drove for Petty
He was better off retiring in 2020
07:11 Thats Alan Kulwicki
I believe one reason Jimmie still races is to get more money for his team.
Bobby Labonties last win wasn’t even at the halfway point of his career.
He just got stuck in mediocre rides post 2003.. that 18 team fell off hard in 2004 and got worse in 2005 so Bobby asked to be released from his contract. He then signed to a dying Petty Enterprises where he actually outperformed his last two Gibbs years and then got stuck with subpar teams the rest of his career (JTG Daughtery being his best ride in that era and before they'd ever won)
Both Terry and Bobby Labonte should have just bowed out gracefully, than race in struggling teams.
Kevin harvey could still win if his car was worth a shit guaranteed
Sterling Marlin?
When you stop winning you have stayed too long. I do not like watching great drivers who are no longer competetive. The reason they have 'charters' stemmed from the fact that Petty and Waltrip couldn't make races on speed so they had to contrive something to make sure full time teams got in the race. Nascar itself is so contrived now that it has no credibility with me. Stage racing and playoffs, not to mention the endless green-white-checkers, did me in.
This is why Jeff Gordon & Dale Earnhardt will always be NASCAR’s top 2 GOATs.
They had amazing peaks, changed the sport & were title contenders until the bitter end.
Every other NASCAR great fell off a cliff in their final years.
It was sad when Gordon announced his retirement, but his reasoning was great. Basically it takes a full commitment to be competitive, he wanted to spend time with his family and wasn’t interested in running 15th. Dude won the third to last race and was in the championship four. Aside from actually winning the Cup, that’s as good as it gets.
@@mlwilliam213 100% agree. JG didn’t want to be a shell of his former self. He left the sport with something in the tank after 2015.
@@mofopradaand his back was 100% to blame. Las Vegas 2008 was the beginning of the end sadly. That wreck messed up his back bad and he knew it was getting worse over time. 2014 was the only year it didn't bother him as much but when it did act up.. Gordon said during one practice session he wasn't sure if he was even going to be able to finish the 2014 season
@@isaiahmarker407 Another example of Jeff’s greatness. Despite a serious back injury, where drivers tend to lose feeling in their car, JG still finished top 10 in points in 2008. He then rallied in 2009 with a 3rd place points finish & a win. He continued to remain competitive, despite the back injury all the way through 2015.
@@mofoprada Yup. Even post injury, he might not have been his former dominant self anymore but he STILL remained one of the most consistent drivers on the track every year until retirement
again it's a car you should be able to drive a race car into your late 50s at least with all the health and workout coaches they have today it's not like your running hitting a ball catching a ball not sure why these guys fall off at 40 crazy 😜
Dude get off Jj. He has Ran good with NOT KNOWING this car.
I’m over this Chanel .
Mark freaking won 5 in one year just before leaving.
