    As an Alaskan, the commercial fisheries are a thing of huge contention up here. On one hand, the economy needs the jobs. On the other, the current bycatch laws allow fisheries to take a massive chunk of the fish coming into the copper river. The boats can fill up on Kings, but locals are limited to one or two per year depending on fish and game.

    • @jonathanwilliams1065

      I'm guessing the reason would be cause of taxes. Commercialy your are required to pay up taxes wich supposedly will create programs to help back the fish.
      Doing it for personal use will not.. and you know some people will just sell tons of fish without reporting.

    How exactly do fishers determine how much salmon they can sustainably fish?

    • @Austin-nk2uu
      @Austin-nk2uu 2 года назад +37

      The government does research and determines an estimate of how many salmon or other fish there are in the body of water being fished and then determine a percentage that can be fished from there

    • @21cup
      @21cup 2 года назад +2

      it's some bloody annoying maths but you can calculate the "regeneration" rate of the fish amd basically you need to let enough breeding fish survive ao that the population is sustainable. If it were purely % based the fish stocks would collapse. if you google fish stock calculation or something it'll probably show up.

    A question was asked that linked to this episode. It asked why Copper river salmon are so good. Considered the best in the world by some. Simple, a good marketing strategy and because the public is generally speaking ignorant of the truth. So I'm not saying the Copper has bad fish. Not at all. The Copper has great environmental conditions and some good bloodlines. But it's mostly a good advertising campaign. Like when companies call Chinook "Kings". I won't go on about this any further because most folks will never know anything other than the farm raised Atlantic salmon they mostly eat. Damm I'm glad I catch my own salmon. 😋🐟🎣

    • @victorbenner539

      @@RiggedBananaGaming catching your own is great. But there are definitely differences in taste with the different salmon species. I just found out they updated our Sockeye run on the Columbia to about 500,000 and they are still passing through the lower river so you all can guess what I'll be doing the next several days. 😉 🎣🐟👍

    Well done video. That said the Chinook from the Copper river are great. But not the best in the world. That title belongs to the spring Chinook that run on the mighty Columbia River. The distances they will travel are in excess of the 300 miles on the Copper. However the numbers on the Copper exceed what is left of the run on the Columbia. The Copper empties into Bristol Bay, one of the last huge salmon runs left in Alaska. Fyi, "Kings" are a nickname. Chinook are what these mighty fish are actually called. Have a great day. 😃

I could put you in a choke hold until you suffocate and it’ll make far less mess than if I were to dispatch you with a gun or knife but honestly the gun or knife would be more humane. Same concept with gill netting vs other forms of netting or fishing in general. Don’t get me wrong I eat fish and I’m eating animal as I type this but calling gill netting as gentle is super ridiculous no offense.
