Good job John and enjoyed watching the vid, thanks for filming the repair. That was a real 'Uncle Bob the plumber' who did that original repair with 1/2 pound of lead!
Brilliant to watch that very satisfying. Ingots of solder on there. I struggle a bit with soldering neatly, I need to invest in a small torch as I have a plumbers version too numb for the job really.
Soldering is one one those jobs which either goes well, or drives you to drink. As you see I use a small torch which works very well. Having read about Rat05s (Steve) exploding cheap torch, I bought one with full EU safety certification which hopefully won't go crazy on me.
Any idea what an equivalent cleaner is in the uk? You said wear a mask when cleaning and when using the polishing bit. Is this a breathing mask or a face shield to stop you getting hit or splashed? Also I have electrical solder with a flux core will this be ok or do I need extra flux , sorry for all the newbie questions!
I don't, but it's a degreaser you are looking for which has hydrogen peroxide in it. I was referring to a breathing mask. Multi- core electrical solder can work but you're creating more work than necessary. Buy some solid solder, maybe 1.5 or 2mm diameter, and a small bottle of flux. 👍
Yes Tim. Mamod only silver soldered a very few of their products. The trains and I think the Challenger TE, plus the Griffin and George version of the SE3 and SP5?

Hi. Yes. Mamod engines of this type were all made using soft solder.

@@JohnnySteam when I’m feeling flush I’ll invest in the dremel one. They get good reviews.

Can you put a link to that type of polishing wheel , I can’t find one that looks like that when I search. Many thanks.
www.ebay.com/itm/222858261424 - but you can find them far cheaper than this
@@JohnnySteam brilliant thanks now I know what to search for
How did you clean the steam bush? Did you put it in acid?
Vinegar and then a small (Dremel size) brass wire brush.
@@JohnnySteam that’s great thank you
Good job John ; 🙂
Using desoldering wick will change your life ... 😬 ; just make a test !
I have tried it and didn't like it Oliv. To each his own!
@@JohnnySteam Indeed John :-) Would just say have a little more practive and you will LOVE it !
"Desoldering wick" hmm I must check that out
It looks very much like they have used normal electrical solder instead of silver soldering it.
