I remember how hard it was for me to start using hutches in MN winters. As soon as they were cleaned off by the mother I moved them out, no matter the temperature. Just lots of straw bed in -20 degree weather. Never lost one in hutch living.
Congratulations on the birth and the baptize of your daughter Elise! It is a blessing to have both sons and daughters, I can confirm. Calves do very well, when they gain that amount of weight in 110 days! This will absolutely have a positive effect on the milk production at later age.
Congratulations 🎉 on the new addition. I pair feed milk. Have for years. Haven’t noticed a heifer coming in with blind quarters from suckling. You got a nice herd there.
Congratulations with the new baby!! Your operation is super clean and well run and the animals look great!! That being said you did ask for opinion on your calf feeding in the group pens. I’d be really concerned about cross sucking- if calves taste milk they have a natural urge to suck. The latest issue of progressive dairy has a great article on this.
The main ingredients are corn and oats in the Calf starter. They will have access to hay at 3 to 4 months old and a mix from our feed wagon at 4 to 5 months old.
Congrats to you all on new baby girl
Thank you!

Where do you sell your cross bred calves?
The majority are sold to 2 local farmers, we also sell the occasional calf to ranchers that need a replacement calf.
Hi Piet, thanks for the last two calf videos, can you please tell me dimensions of single pens and what are the dividers made of. Cheers Richard 🇦🇺
Sorry for the late reply. The pens are 40 inches wide and 8 feet deep. The dividers are made of plastic.

Thank you! So far, it hasn't been as big of a problem as I was expecting, but definitely something we'll be watching closely.

Proficiat met jullie dochterje. Bedankt voor de update van de groepshuisvesting. Is het minder werk dan werken met iglo's? Groetjes
