- Sycamore has a higher than average median household income, and an affordable real estate market for the area. The public schools have good ratings, and overall it's a nice place to settle down in if that's what you're looking for. It's also home to the longest standing cold case that has ended in a conviction in United States History.

❤️❤️❤️
I was born in Sycamore Illinois in 1934, My How it has grown since then. When Maria Riddulf was kidnapped the police went through everyone's houses and apartments, including my husband's and My place and checked closets at every home looking for her. Such a horrible thing to happen in our wonderful little town. I will never forget it.
When I was small and going to school, the old High school was till there. The only place you didn't show was Elmwood Cemetery and the parade that went past our street on Memorial day every year to end at the cemetery and did such a wonderful tribute to our troops from every war as they entered the gate. I believe they still do that every year.
My Dad built our home that still stands and is well kept up by whoever owns the house now, All nine of us kids were born in that house from a 106 years ago.
. In my school days days there were only 6300 people living in Sycamore, It grew some by the time I left there as an adult. Thank you so much for this and all the Memories. Betty Carlton (Edwards in those days)
My Dad was born in 1934 in neighboring DeKalb & lived there until he went to college! 😳😊
This is my Hometown! Born and Raised here. My grandchildren are 4th generation Sycamorens
Aww, my Dad who is almost 90 was born & raised in nearby DeKalb, IL & frequently went to Sycamore. ❤️
Thank you for the tour of a most interesting little town. Really enjoyed seeing the library. Keep up your great work!
Thanks!
Another great Virtual Tour. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks!
I really enjoy your videos. You have a radio voice that is easy to listen to.
Thanks!
I want to clarify something very strongly regarding the Cold Case murder of Maria Ridolph and the trial of Jack McCullough. Firstly, I've spent most of my life in DeKalb and have been to nearby Sycamore hundreds if not thousands of times over the years. I've had at least two jobs there. I also watched the trial live at the courthouse, talked to people involved with it I read the book Footsteps in the Snow about the case.
The assertion that he was found to be innocent in 2015 is complete hogwash. I watched the trial live and that man was as guilty as sin. All that happened in 2015 was that a new State's Attorney was elected who had a beef with the previous State's Attorney who convicted McCullough. He examined some evidence McCullough presented that a phone call was made from Rockford to Sycamore on the night of the abduction and based on that he let him go. First off the timeline itself is in dispute so McCullough could easily have had time to go to Rockford and make the call. Furthermore just because a call was made does not at all prove that McCullough made it. It's simply shows that a phone call was made at that time from Rockford. All the other evidence points to him being guilty and when he was found guilty the entire courtroom burst out cheering. Even McCullough's own family was convinced of his guilt.
So in short there was no comprehensive legal process whatsoever that "proved" McCullough's innocence. He was simply released by one man and one man alone, State's Attorney Richard Schmack. Schmack decided to single-handedly let him go so basically there was no prosecution, just defense attorneys and a worthless prosecutor who sided with the defense attorneys. The family of Maria Ridolph tried to get a special prosecutor but their request was denied. If Schmack looked at that flimsy evidence that McCullough presented and decided that it was worth giving him a new trial I could have been okay with that. But for him to just let that monster walk was repulsive and unconscionable. Schmack lost the next election because of it but sadly the new State's Attorney wouldn't take the case on again. It's a true travesty of justice.
One other note, McCullough (then named John Tessier) wasn't 24 at the time he abducted Maria Ridolph, he was 18.
Amazing how in a short time frame one can be made very familiar with a place they have never visited. The drone portion is the icing on the cake. The unsolved murder is extremely rare! As part of my education I spent time on a forensic medical examiner team and the whole situation does not add up...incredible. As Chris Darden has explained in so many of his videos Sycamore is desirable due to a nice downtown and older neighborhoods. High state property taxes are a drag but still the schools and overal housing stock and crime stats are good. Watching many of theses great videos illustrates many of the keys of a succesful community. Very very well done!
Woohoo! I loved everything about this video!
Awesome!
I enjoyed my time in Sycamore, thanks for doing this video. Brought back many great memories!
It’s my home town and love to see it and hear about it moreeeee
Country living Sycamore and Hampshire Illinois supports President Trump and our Veterans. We hunt and fish and farm!
Same!!!
thank you for the tour....😊
You're welcome!
I was surprised to come across your video. Even more surprised that you drove past my house!
Haha.
This is very interesting, I personally knew this never happened I always thought Sycamore was known for it's large Halloween's that take place and known for the library. This is my town that I live in we where raised here for a while. Thank you for such a interesting video.
I moved to sycamore from Kentucky in 2000 and stayed there until 2007 so 1st grade through 7th .. and I loved that town so much and still do . Glad to see someone taking their time to make a video about it
I left Sycamore in 2001 And it’s crazy how much has changed since then
Great video of my home town. I obviously know you can’t go through every single part of a place but at 22:36 if you would have kept going straight north on 23 there’s a few more nice neighborhoods like the one you went through turning right. And there’s a jewel osco, a cadets, and a restaurant (hobnobbers). Awesome tour though, 👍
I lived in Sycamore during my junior high years, 7th and 8th grade, 1986-1988. It was a nice little town to "come of age" in during the '80s. I learned to play golf at the Sycamore Golf Club and still have my old Sycamore Park District ID card. You came within one block of the cemetery where Maria Ridulph was buried (Elmwood) around the 8 minute point when you were on Meadow. I used to ride my bike through Elmwood and I remember our neighbor telling us about the case so I found the grave. Very sad.
I used to live in Sycamore from the time I was born in 1986 to 2001, it’s crazy how much it has changed since then.
My Grandfather and father owned businesses from the corner of state and main, from the corner to the first empty lot, headed west on State Street Directly across from the Courthouse
I really NJOI ya videos .. what’s the name of the Instrumental playin in the background on this Episode
I wouldn’t say Pumpkin Fest is a quirky small town thing. People come from all over the country to attend it
Would like to see a tour of Streator, IL
@10:19 that’s the Sycamore Depot Museum on the left. It used to be used for stock storage for AutoMeter Products, straight ahead
Have you revisited the metro east especially the rural towns in st Clair county and Randolph county excluding Chester
Not sure if I'll be making videos on all of the places that you're thinking of but I'll have more videos coming from that area one day.
Lived there when I was little my brother and my mom and loved it
I used to live Around Sycamore, I heard many stories of Murders, suicides, and disappearances. I never knew much about it, but if I had heard about the story of Maria Riddulf, I probably would've listened to my mother when she told me not to go too far from the house. 😧
Hopefully in the future could you do a Redford Township Michigan drive-through
One day I will
Woah you drove past my parents house 😂😂 I could recognize my brothers car parked in the street
Have a love hate relationship with my town but it is interesting that my road and house are home to the oldest cold case.
What I saw was that it “was” “the oldest cold case to end in a conviction”... until that conviction ended up being overturned. That is cool though.
sycamore isn't far from me love it great lil town
Can you give the name of the intro please
Also
It’s right next to Harvard video you did the other day
Actually, Harvard is about 33 miles north of Sycamore.
I used to ride my bike up and down Borden Ave. Back and forth from my Dads house to my Grandparents
Seems like a lifetime ago
Do Olney il next please
One day I will. Can't promise when.
Felt the earthquake while living in Cortland. It was a nice little shake 😆
Me too in plano! I thought a car drove into our house when the walls were shaking.
Gréât vidéo. The title is a bit misleading. I was expecting a video on the murder. Was more of guided tour.
Thanks, but real question: Would you of known about the murder if you didn't click on the video? Or did you know about the murder and you were looking for a video that was all about the murder?
The map is a 404 error now
My hometown from 66 to 96. Its not the same town anymore. People started migrating from the suburbs in the late 70’s and brought their way of life with them. Dont get me wrong, it is still a great town, just not the farm town where everyone knew each other. Mayor Red Johnson’s passing is when things really started to take off with new subdivisions. Still miss ole Frenchy the parking meter policeman. Sycamore was my Mayberry type town way back when.
Born there and lived there 'til I was a year and a half old (and one of my 'rents grew up there, and my g'rents were partners in the hotel/restaurant/bar downtown), then ended up in DeKalb from eighth grade thru graduation -and never once did I hear about this (or the Starved Rock triple murder of 1960) until a woman I used to work with and once helped move house dropped dime on the guy who got convicted and later won his appeal
I grew up on fair st. And went to west elementary. God i miss the 80s
I live on Fair st right now! Lol
That’s where I use to live now I live in Dekalb iL
You’d think that Dekalb would be the county seat of Dekalb county. You’d also think that Winnebago would be the county seat of Winnebago county. But it isn’t. 🤔
State Street that great street. I just wanna say. They do things they don’t do on Broadway. I’m sorry 😣 That was from the song Chicago The toddling town.
Too bad you didn’t get a good shot of the Civil War Monument in the front of the courthouse.
Eggspress!!! That place is so good.
my grandma was friends with her older brother
That case cost Sycamore, IL State Police and other agencies hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I’ll even call you in candlewick gated community there
Don't think I'll ever make a video in a gated community. Maybe a video on the city that surrounds it though!
Plzz do poplar grove IL
Maybe one day. Can't promise when if I do.
My home town I grew up on elfin dr
If you take 64 to the end you wind up in Savanna Illinois.
It’s right next to Belvidere by Rockford 15 minutes out
At 25:06 what is the large building with the flag in front?
Do you mean 22:06?!
@@ChrisHarden I misread the time stamp. Sorry. The building at 17:21 It looks like a government building of some sorts. It also has a large statue in front. That’s the one I meant . Sorry for the mixup.
@@glennso47 that’s the DeKalb county courthouse
@@ChrisHarden Thanks. I still have difficulty with the idea that Dekalb is not the seat of Dekalb County. In fact the only local county I know that has the same name for the county as for the county seat is Carroll, where the county seat is Mount Carroll. Although I read somewhere that the original county seat was to be Savanna. 😐
@@glennso47 - Effingham County, Jersey County, Kankakee County, Lawrence County, Peoria County, Rock Island County, Shelby County….all named with matching county seat cities…..
My stepmoms nephew was killed at the courthouse i believe early 90s
Grew up there 1989 to 2004, no better place to be. It was an amazing area to grow up at the time, felt like we were living 10 years in the past. Real huck finn shit...
Now 2022 that subdivision is mostly full. That’s right by Peace/Plank and art 23
Thats crazy, when I left Sycamore in 2001 there was almost nothing out in that area of Plank road and Peace road, except one building that was a clinic office at the time if i remember correctly
I was born and spent the first 35 years of my life there. Was awesome when I was young. People didn't even lock their doors at night. Illinois has been losing lots of its population the last 20 years. I escaped to missouri 17 years ago. I urge everyone there to leave.
My hometown.
Do they still have the Pumpkin Festival?
Seems like they'll have one this year.
Yep! missed it last year
I live in sycamore
childhood home town 😂
I went to NIU, and I think of Sycamore as being the neighbouring town that students who attend NIU long enough eventually end up partially exploring and becoming vaguely familiar with. It's also where they go if they get a moving violation and have to appear in court about it.
I was stuck in DeKalb a few years after graduating, and I used the Sycamore public library sometimes as a workplace. I never got around to visiting that one burger/iced cream shop (or maybe it was a pizza place, I don't remember, I left DeKalb in 2015). I can't remember why, but maybe I saw a low yelp review?
That 'earthquake' was such a joke. I was not only around at the time, but awake and doing stuff (I was working a night job), and barely noticed (I felt slightly uneasy for a moment, and then normal - the next day I heard people going on about an earthquake and recalled that feeling the previous night). All these people were flipping out, and I made a Facebook page of 'I survived the ________ earthquake,' with a crying baby icon. I didn't even remember that until you mentioned it, so the fact that it was worth bringing up as a point in this video says a lot about how boring Sycamore is.
The Midwest Museum of Natural History went out of business in Sycamore.
Looks like you’re right. That’s a shame.
What's the unsolved murder what's the case?
9:08
The kidnapping and murder of a 7 year old little girl that occurred in the year 1957. Its sadly still unsolved to this day.
:0 i live here
Bro drove past my house
Drove past my other house 😭
Destroying the RUclips algorithm. Even if I don’t make any other comments.😁
That's what's up. I've told you before that I appreciate all of your comments. Thank you!
@@ChrisHarden I have never been to sycamore so I didn’t know if I had anything to comment on. I just wanted to make sure I did at least some damage to that @#$& algorithm. 😁. As Patty Loveless sang “That’s The Kind Of Mood I’m In “ 😂🤨
Illinois is the Venezuela of the United States
Maybe Venezuela is the Illinois of the Western Hemisphere. 🥴
lol
The video was interrupted by some Democrat ad with Chuck Schumer. 🤮 Other than that your tour of Sycamore was very nice.
Country living Sycamore and Hampshire Illinois supports President Trump and our Veterans. We hunt and fish and farm!
You wanna know about unsolved murders in Illinois head to Chicago. You average 2 a day lol
There is some truth to that sadly.
So all parents to be parents teachers Nanny's n daycare n sun school teachers ect should have to have infant CPR adult CPR first-aid certificates from the Red Cross heimlich maneover training as well as the free car seat safety class certification kids in cars be quiet stay in ur seat and in the seatbelt no cells or texting while driving no alcohol drinking and driving madd meetings a meeting with parents of missing kids murdered kids and accidental deaths also classes w the tools n products to baby n kid safe the house yard garage pool tubs ect just like the car seat safety class thinking about a free car seatalso they should have to do infant and toddler and preschool and then elementary School and preteen and teen parenting classes all of this before the tragedy happens not after

Hillbilly town is what you're saying?
You talk way to much about yourself!
Do they still have the Pumpkin Festival?
Yes
You didn't watch the video.
Seems like they'll have one this year.
He mentioned that in the video. You should watch it!
