1. Be more active 2. Be active both physically and mentally 3.It's the activity that counts 4. Try to control your impulses 5. Vary your activities 6. Enjoy what you are doing
This is just it, and it's why some of my videos are about this kind of thing even though they typically don't do well in terms of views: If you have no energy, you can forget about learning languages. I've got to remind myself of this stuff almost daily, so thank you Steve, for posting this reminder!
As someone with chronic fatigue, I have one more point to add to this: don't exhaust yourself completely. If you do this one more thing, in the moment, you might be happy about it, but if it makes you so tired that you can't do anything the following hours/days, it's not effective.
I’m so sorry that you have CFS. I had it for years (as well as depression, yeast overgrowth and fibromyalgia) but I got well and I’m 61. If you want to hear how, I’ll share. It’s basic things that are free or almost free. In fact, since it’s such easy things most people refuse to do them, it’s sad. Diet change is a must as well as mental (like he says here) cleanness are essential to feeling better.
@@vaar5758everything he says is right. Having energy comes from a mindset, balance of output and rest, joy of learning and sharing what you learn. It also comes from having crucial, excellent nutrition. Look into David Toman, an expert on brain function.
This video is absolutely amazing! I started using your listening advice about 6 to 7 months ago and my Japanese langauge comprehension sky-rocketed big time. not only that but my studying has sky rocketed in general 😀
Steve is the benevolent grandfather that we all need in our lives! 😄 This is all great advice. Simple and enduring truths that are hard to put into practice but offer huge rewards if you can manage it. If I am as healthy, active, and sharp at 78 as Steve is, I'll consider it a great triumph.
To point #3: a teacher once told me, "measure input not progress." So true. Not that progress cannot be noted, but you must keep going. Reward yourself for language input -- and compete against yourself not others.
For me I learned "that which taketh energy giveth back energy". I've never felt more alive than when I'm actually moving around and doing something with my body regularly. That's why I work a trade and go to the gym - I live by the motto "work hard, eat well, rest well". If you are missing one of those things in your life then it will ruin you.
Thank you, so much needed this! Steve, unknowingly to you, you are one of my online academic mentors, a generous source of inspiration. Much gratitude and love ❤️ btw I can testify, I have noticed it too, the more productive I am the happier and the more energised I feel.
Thanks, Steve! Great suggestions. Especially about the prefrontal cortex info! And also about the enjoyment, staying in the moment. Thank you! (And thanks for having Serbian in LingQ. Many language apps don't! That's politics for ya! I'm a first generation Canadian, and learning the language of my heritage is really a helpful thing.) You have a great vibe, and it shows in the app. I love the funtion of importing articles. So great. Thank you!
Great. Don't forget that you can import videos from RUclips with a single click on the browser extension and the transcript will sock in as a lesson, time stamped and ready to use in sentence mode or karaoke mode.
Hi Steve! There's something I wanna pinpoint about your videos that I like so much, you always speak in a normal speed, I see some teachers on RUclips speaking way too slowly, and no one speak like that in real life. I'm just talking that if their students get accustomed with their pace of speaking may they will have a hard time to understand the english of real life.
Excellent video, Steve!! These are all great tips. I really needed to hear this today, as I'm a language learner beginning to dabble in Korean, as well as continuing learning Japanese, Russian, and Spanish (and giving English lessons). All of this while being a momma to two little ones. It's a lot! By the way, you look and sound amazing for your age!
Just what I needed now for my language learning journey. Thanks Steve for always making videos that contain practical and useful tips. More power to you and your channel.😊
At 61, I have less experience than you but this is tremendous and excellent content, so true and effective. Hands down!!! Gracias, merci, спасибо, Ausgezeichnet, tres bien, תודה, gratias tibi!
Giving yourself credit for showing up is indeed so important. I make space in my notebook for a list of dates on which I have scheduled lessons and put a check next to each date after I’ve completed the lesson, no matter how many mistakes I made or think I may have made. ☑️ Showing up > not showing up!
The tip 4 is great in terms of exercising one's ability to focus and not get distracted. However, we should also bear in mind that the power of will is a limited resource which is getting exhausted if used too much. So if we plan to e.g. learn languages very intensively, eat healthy, be physically active etc. all in the same time it might quickly start getting really tough! The key is probably not to try to be "perfect" in everything and find time for relax too.
Steve, I would like to watch a video about how to keep up-to-date all languages we learn, I mean, how do not downgrade our level in one language when we learn others? I would like to know your tips and experience about that! Have a great 2024!
1. Be more active or proactive to feel more energy. 2. Be active both mentally and physically. 3. Count your activities not on results. 4. Try to control your impulses. Keep silent your phone or keep it away. 5. Vary your activities. 6. Enjoy your activities.
Your videos inspired me, Mr Kaufmann. Could u please tell me how many words should I learn a day? Hopefully you answer my question. Thank you in advance.
@Thelinguist yeh that was what I was thinking, because there're some days that I do spent 1 hour or more but dont achieve the same numbers of words read
I am 23 and every day at 1pm-3pm (or after I eat for the first time in the day) I am tired an hour later.. it is quite annoying. Maybe this is because when I wake up I take a shower and then read in my target language.. but even before I started studying I was tired after eating.. which is annoying.. I'm VERY much a night owl, my whole family is.. so I have lots of energy at night. Even after a hard workout (a few hours later). When I started learning Portuguese (my 1st foreign language) the first year was VERY exhausting for me.. now I'm at 2 years so it's not super exhausting.. not like it was.. just a few words or a yt video would make me have to take a nap.. and I am currently reading a book in Portuguese and it's difficult so it's still beating up my brain but at the beginning when I knew nothing I almost feel like I could feel my brain making new neurons or paths or something. It was terrible.. idk if anyone else has had this experience.. but it's not like that now. Just a mass amount of reading (especially new vocabulary) does give me fatigue, but I don't NEED to take a nap after reading or watching vids anymore
Try taking a cup of coffee or a green tea. Rosemary tea is very good for studying it will put you to sleep after 20 minutes. Take a walk for an hour then study and you will not feel lazy.

Steve, can you try to do a video with an ADHD polyglot? It really impacts motivation and ability to focus. I try to make it count when I experience hyperfocus, but it's difficult to build habits. The gameification of Duolingo helps a bit with dopamine but not enough with fluency. Thanks.
Fantastic advice!!! I think this is one of my favorite videos yet! Can you give the name of the app you use?-thank you and I hope you have a great day :)💞
hey steve! love your videos btw and thankyou for everything you do.. I’m interested in history just like you but have difficulty finding good books to read.. do you have a blog entry or a video in which you list some history book you can recommend?
great timing today to feel very tried because i had to wake up early because of an unexpected visitor. then i took a 30 minute nap i felt better but still not great so then a few hours later i took another 30 minute nap. but i really shouldn't have done that because for some reason i feel even more exhausted now than in the morning it makes no sense but i guess more rest isn't always better . now i am just waiting until its my normal bed time in a few hours and hoping nothing unexpected happens .this is so annoying and lame my day is ruined
Hey Steve! Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you had any advice for knowing if we have false impressions of a culture? I learned French and spent a year in Switzerland..I feel like when I speak or hear things in French it feels stressful because I haven't been exposed/nor do I know where to find what is it about Francophone cultures that Francophones love--what brings them warmth...ect. At the moment, it feels like a cold culture but I know this must be a poor impression. I was wondering if you've ever had an experience like this, and what do you recommend if so?
the whole thing about the right prefrontal cortex and resitence to attempts of distraction, does that really works? because my procrastination take place everytime you know, it's hard do things that we need, I dont enjoy most of it no matter what topic I'm reading and listening, I have 11k words in english, but obviusly i dont know the 11k words!! many of them are low-frequency word that I have never seen again
Mr Kaufmann, how can I learn a language that has a limited amount of writing ressources and no audio ressources. I'm working on a TTS (text-to-speech) model to read the available texts out loud, but its classic writing is not regular, I don't think that's enough.
