    Gotta love how Lucanis is an ABOMINATION and yet he’s not his demon at most is used to be idfk Spite is such a non character I forgot he existed for like 90% of the game.

    • @themaplebeard
      @themaplebeard 7 дней назад +3

      I agree. I feel like he had his potential wasted. A demon possessing a non-mage is interesting, but it really did feel like Spite was of such little consequence to the game. I wish that his character story involved more of his struggles with keeping Spite under control.

    Shame about Lucanis, especially considering he had a promising start with his recruitment mission in that cool underwater prison, then Spite abusing him right after. Can't believe it went nowhere.

    Emmrich is quite easily up there with my favourite companions of all time. His romance is really sweet, and I love that the writer didn't shy away from having him and Rook have an argument. It made Rook's subsequent capture all the more impactful, knowing that the two never got to make things right.
    I personally always revive Manfred. It just feels like Emmrich's arc is all about overcoming his fear, and if he becomes a Lich, he just never does. Yes, he risks death by attempting the ritual, but he never begins to come to terms with the inevitability of death.
    It also feels like the Lichdom ending doesn't make much sense if you're romancing him? Like, isn't one of the conditions of becoming a Lich Lord supposed to be freeing yourself from earthly attachments?
    Honestly, I quite like Lucanis, he's probably even above Davrin on my list. I think they went in an interesting direction by exploring what a person who literally does nothing but murder since childhood would be like. He wouldn't be well socialized, he'd be awkward, weird and clunky in every situation but the one he was trained for. But I do agree that they didn't go far enough with the implications of who he is. One thing that could have improved his storyline massively would be to have him kill Illario, and the option for the player would be to either let him do it or convince him to have Illario imprisoned. It just baffles me that forgiveness is even an option here, especially since the game treats Mayor Julius, who had no idea about who the gods really were, as an irredeemable villain, but Illario we can't even let die?

    Emmrich is the best companion for me, no contest there. Couldn’t romance him though, my dwarven Rook gal was a MW warrior, and hitting on him felt very inappropriate for some reason.
    Romanced Davrin, loved his personal growth. Just a bit boring no bs straightforward honest GW romance for a change lol (looking at you, Blackwall).
    Had the same change of heart with Bellara.
    Next would probably be Neve.
    Then Lucanis (I totally forgot he existed at times) and Taash. I can’t understand how anyone could take Taash seriously, I don’t hate them, bud OMG, they are a 14 yo moody child, it just feels wrong to even expose them to stuff other members of Veilguard are constantly exposed too.
    Last is Harding. I adored her in the Inquisition, but couldn’t stand talking to her in Veilguard. Especially as a dwarf. She acted as if all this titan business was somehow solely about her. Always trying to rush into something or throwing a fit.

  • @rion9236
    @rion9236 8 дней назад +6

    Honestly, talking to Neve is like talking to Siri with a hero complex.
    Harding though, I really like her final quest. But yea compared to Inquisition Harding, she felt toned down here.

    • @themaplebeard
      @themaplebeard 7 дней назад

      I see where they were going for with Neve. Trying that Noir detective attitude and speech. Her story was interesting. I would have liked to have had the story in the ritzier parts of Minrathous since you are trying to take down the Venetori, but Dock Town was alright. Harding, I just wish there was more to her story. It seems like such a huge thing to drop lore wise and just have little side chats and quests with her.

  • @CloneByDesign
    @CloneByDesign 9 дней назад +8

    I like Lucanis but he’s not exactly a model Crow, at least from a lore perspective. He’s more like a barista with knives and a penchant for vengeance, which would unironically be an amazing RPG companion.

  • @mightymoon02

    I like your list and you explained it well. It's somewhat similar to mine. For me, the list is like this:
    7. T(r)aash: I don't think any explanation is needed here. She's the worst, way above Sera when it comes to being the worst in Dragon Age. She would have been interesting, qunaris are as a race seem exciting, especially after Bull. Such a let down. And this non-binary thing makes no sense to me, since we don't use pronouns in my country, so it's also something that bothers me nowadays.
    6: Harding: I just can't fathom how entirely annoying she's become. Her story for me is the least interesting next to Taash's. She seemed like a nice character in Inquisition, but here, she's just awful. You explained her character perfectly. No wonder I choose her at the end a a team leader so she can die.
    5: Neve: She's very boring to me too, the Shadow Dragons especially. There's nothing really interesting about any of them, nor about the town. I will save Minrathous in my current playthrough, just to see how it plays out.
    4: Bellara: Her overhyped and over the top personality for me is too much, I can't take her for long, but at the end she seems more focused and more serious, so that's a redeeming quality for Bel. And I really like her friendship with Neve, they are the typical example of a girl team.
    3: Lucanis: I agree his story should be more serious, and his struggle with Spite should be more focused on, and treated better. Otherwise, I like his design and he seems like a genuinely good person, even a demon inside him can't take it away from him.
    2: Emmrich: I will try romancing him in my current playthrough, I heard he's the best. His relationship with Manfred is very heartwarming, and how can you not like a necromancer? One of the coolest classes in games that have the option to be one. Although he's more like an English gentleman, which is weird considering Nevarra is like Germany in this world, even Cassandra had Germanish accent. It's not as important, but would have been better if BioWare remembered that part.
    1: Davrin: No wonder he comes out as top 1. His romance was sweet, Assan is cute and we finally have griffons in this universe. His comment about "bigoted humans" was off putting to me, but I let is slide, other than that he's a good character, even if I don't give a damn about Wardens anymore.

    As expected the Grey Warden ended up being my favorite. Easily my favorite faction as a massive fan of The Witcher I love monster hunter character types. Grey Wardens have the same task as witchers but just get way more downsides due to the calling and not having im enhanced speed, reflexes and senses like my man Geralt of Rivia. Playing as warden rook I think the dynamic with Davrin is great and having rook hear the whispers of the archdemon as well was such a subtle but cool detail. There are some companions that I just never used and others I rotated and it was mostly between Harding, Davrin, Neve and Emmrich. Lucanis is just kinda mid tbh. I did not care about Taash or Bellara as much because those two single handedly gave the game the reputation of having shit writing and dialogue. 90% of the terrible scenes came from those two and all of the best stuff is from the others I’ve mentioned before. All that being said I don’t actually hate Bellara and Taash but they just don’t hold a candle to the others. I ended up enjoying Emmrich a lot more than I thought I would. But if we’re really being serious this was manfred and assan’s game and everyone else was just a side character. Absolutely the best boys around.

  • @trashcangoblin420

    Being asked to pick between which culture Taash embraces is uh.. a choice especially if you are from a diaspora etc. just a weird bit of writing.
    I didn’t mind the non-binary stuff - and I loved that they were gruff and direct, but the bharv scene. Please. I’m queer, I’m non binary; this was written for me I suppose and I did absolutely not want it.

    • @tmage23

      You're queer and non-binary but I suspect you're also a dozen other things that you consider integral to your identity. Taash is just that one thing. That's not representation, it's box checking.

      @ValexLM 9 дней назад +3

      I honestly kinda liked the bharv thing, not necessarily about the misgendering by accident but I did like all the dialogue about it (by doing it you actually show that you're sorry instead of just saying a word without actual mean it)

    About Taash, I agree with everything you said. Still, Taash kind of grew on me, through the party banter. Their companion quest sucked ass, but the writing was 150% better when they had other companions to bounce off of.
    Their arc with Emmrich was surprisingly sweet and a lot of the banter they got was genuinely funny in a good way.

    Really appreciate the balance here, and your perspective on the whole series. I've had fun talking to friends about DATV but all the convos online are so freakish for the most part. I wound up kinda liking Lucanis as a Carth, Kaidan, Wyll, "inoffensive nice guy" companion tbh, but he's definitely no Zevran. Gotta see how I get on with Taash and Emmerich

    Ngl, I thought this video was going to be a ranking based on combat usefulness. Hadn’t even given much to any thought to this aspect. Overall, I would probably have to put Neve last. She has no development, no dilemma and no personal conflict internal or external other than there is a threat to her city. Taash has far more struggle in being essentially an immigrant refugee caught between two cultures, constantly seeking approval of a harsh and exacting parent (who doesn’t know better), is personally targeted and hunted, and has the tragedy of losing their only family when they do get the understanding they were seeking. Therein, their choice at the end feels like a much more compelling dilemma of having to choose how best honour their only family and who they struggled with their whole life. (Being nonbinary was just another layer on top of being caught between two worlds).
    Easily, I agree with Aswan, manfred and Davrin being best. My favourite RP scene in the game was joining in with Aswan and manfred hissing and squawking at davrin.

    I can admit with almost all of this ranking of the companions. To me personally, i really like Emmerich and davrin, mainlu cause i love both asan, and Manfred, they are cool, but to me, my number 1 would have to be Bellara, i just love her alot. My firsy romance in my first playthrough was Harding, on my second i chose Bellara, and I personally loved both of them.
    On a side note, yes taash, as a chatacter, sucks. I did notice one thing that would've made her questline a little bit better, at least in my eyes. She does go on about her mother. BUT, she never brings up her FATHER, not ever. It would've made a more interesting story if the big villain for Taash's questline to be her father going mad with power, making a deal with the elven gods or something like that,

    It is hard to me to choose favorite companions, because most of then does not even feel that much like a good character or even a possible person to exist, like we had in the other games. Cassandra is my favorite companion of the series, i just cant compare none of them with her, it is simply another level of quality. The only ones i felt that were memorable and respect were Emrich and Davrin
    Using Harding as an example, she is a case of a character that has so much potential and still you can never take her serious, because she looks like shes always smilling and not taking anything like a big deal. She has a cool and massive sidequest background, she was a cool character in inquisition, still she feels like a child that have this big role just becausee the game chose so.

    I'm a huge Dwarfs fan in every IP... Dragon Age for sure but especially in Warhammer. I really liked the new lore around the source of the Blight, and it was part and parcel of Lace Harding's story. Both her story and romance as a Dwarf were excellent. It flows well, and the things she struggles with are part of the romance storyline, too. (Spoiler: Her Lyrium-infused body causes feedback when you try to kiss her, so you need to resolve her personal storyline in order to advance the romance.)
    I would have loved more Dwarf lore and more Dwarf-specific armor and weapons, but all in all, it was fine.

    I agree on the disappointment of Lucanis, and your not even romancing him which is also disapppointing that path, but I disagree on letting us kill Illario. The backlash against some of these characters is weird. I get that their stories don't resonate with everyone but the amount of neuro-atypical representation is great.
    Tash is neuro-atypical on top of their non binary orientation. Moreover they only just found out that non binary existed as a concept in front of people. Thats going to be awkward in real life and therefore is by design. Their dialogue is a bit stilted but in a way that reminds me of real people i actual know. They're not for everyone but the hate is misplaced.
    Lucanis spent years being tortured and tormented. Of course he's broken. The fade conversations that occur where you rescue him from himself are pretty solid but you only get those if you save Treviso so that's easy to miss.
    Neve is a touch on the forgettable side, that's true.
    Harding feels the same as she did before so i didn't understand the op's complaints. He's story is fantastic and it's biggest failure is it's too short.
    Bellara is also very neuro-atypical, but in a different way than Tash. Forced vs non forced is a matter of skewed perception having not met nor awkward people in real life. Bellara is great though i agree.
    Emrich is ok at best. The Nevara lore and lichdom stuff is cool but wasn't a hard decision at all. Lichdom was the obvious right choice. He's the weakest mage imo, but all mages are great so that's minimal. He's just kindof mid to me. He's not believable and is the most cartoonish of all companions.
    Davrin is solid gold. Top tier. No arguments. Sad about the limited choices at the end because id love both him and Harding to survive. But in death, sacrifice.

  • @ValexLM
    @ValexLM 9 дней назад +1

    My list is kinda close to you in some parts... My top 3 are basically top tier for me and are way above the others (Davrin, Bellara and Emme)
    Harding is next in a tier of her own with some bad things but mostly good things about her character and story
    Then it's when the order gets very different my number 5 is Lucanis, I do agree he is a very disappointing character but I can deal with it, I'm currently romancing him after romancing Davrin and it's been very meh and I can't wait to finish this play to start another and romance Emme, the entire story about the demon and his cousin I have to completely agree with you because why can't I kill his cousin after all he did? And why isn't the demon more important in the story?
    Anyway... Next I have to choose Taash... I know this is crazy but I like Taash more than Neve, Taash is very annoying, kinda dumb and rude and why the fuck do we have to choose something that should be their personal choice? That being said I do like the design of the character (Qunari firebreather with 2 axes is badass) I do think is important to have a character that struggles with the "gender stuff" and even with all the bad writing and cringe dialogue there is some good conversations about the subject and it is kinda realistic how they don't even know how to feel and deal with things (not all people are full realised about their Queerness and know how to deal with it) but yeah the character could and should be much better
    And there's Neve... I really can't tell why I dislike Neve so much but I just do, she annoys me so much, don't like her look, don't like her voice and way she talks, the story is meh, the personality is meh the only thing I like about her makes me don't like her because I wanted that for my character (the blizzard attack) so yeah she's the character that if I could I wouldn't even have around but unfortunately is with us since the beginning 😅

    I liked Emmrich's story choice at the end, but found his overly disney-esque nature grating, and while I like how his cheery and approachable nature runs contrary to the typical portrayal of necromancers in fiction, he was lacking a few too many edges for me to really enjoy. Also, Lich 100%, it's the only choice wherein it feels like his character really grows and moves forward in a way I find satisfying.
    Davrin is 100% the best boy in this game, and It's really no contest IMO. I got really tired of hearing Gloomhowler(I cringed a little bit even typing it) spoken out loud during his quest line, but it was a great quest line nonetheless, with really cool places to explore and a satisfying end.
    I actually liked Neve a fair bit, her romance with Lucanis was cute and I actually liked her quests a fait bit even though they don't really amount to much in the long run- You're just helpin' your friend protect her city.
    Bellara's first impression on me was BAD(Lol, so random amirite?), but her first companion quest actually made me tear up a little bit, lots of emotional vulnerability. Much better character than I initially thought she'd be. Also, she's kinda busted in combat, galvanic tear is goated. I'd give her a C+ or B- personally, I didn't care much for her overall storyline, but she definitely grows more than most characters in this game during her storyline.
    You talked about Sera...It's been a while since I played inquisition, give or take 10 years, so...grain of salt. I think she'd solo every companion in this game aside from Davrin in a personality contest. I remember loving her raunchy humor and especially during trespasser, I remember her making me laugh out loud with the pranks she'd pull. Could be rose-tinted glasses /shrug. Sera was a vibe as much as she was a character, taking the piss out of everyone else taking themselves so seriously.

    I more or less agreed with everything but I ended up really loving Harding and had her second to Emmrich (easy MVP and ended up my boyfriend because Darvin has to die and Lucanis was boo-boo mad I didnt save his city: meaning that I basically didn't have much of a choice of a bf anyway). Bellara started super annoying but like you I grew to like her and she did have a meaningful story. I would say these three are my faves, Darvin next (a bit too teenage boy sulky) and didn't like the last three (Neve, Lucanis, Taash). I discovered Dragon Age with "Inquisition" now one of my favorite games ever and I'm replaying it right after finishing Veilguard since Veilguard did not satisfy me at all. We not only had 9 complex companions in "Inquisition" we also had a huge cast of meaningful characters. Veilguard is empty AF, and the "cities" are just one street in one quarter owned by a dubious faction. Where's the epicness gone?!

    Not many things I agree with on your list. Davrin is by far the most boring companion in The Veilguard and subsequently at the bottom of my list. I don't dislike him, he is just plain boring. And he had unlike Alistair no Morrigan to banter with. That brings me to one of the biggest flaws with the Veilguard companions. The (almost) total lack of friction between the different companions themselves and the companions and Rook.
    The only companion who bring some well needed friction is actually Taash.
    So my list would look something like this:
    1. Neve
    2. Taash
    3-6. Bellara, Emmerich, Harding and Lucanis in no particular order
    7. Davrin

      Taash is the worst character in a video game I’ve ever seen 😂 she was rude, childish, entitled, and intolerant. Everyone walked on egg shells around anything to do with her.

      @ all of the mass effects, all of the Dragon age games the only one I didn’t beat was inquisition. Taash is easily the worst. She doesn’t have a single redeeming quality. It felt like in all the other games any companions I didn’t like I could just ignore, Taash literally feels unavoidable playing the game.

      I actually don't think that phrase is that bad, I see people comparing it with Dorian and honestly that only brings a level of realism to the game, every Queer person comes out in a different way, the same person can/probably will come out differently to different people and occasions, so yeah Dorian telling the Inquisitor that he prefers the company of men is amazingly well done but Taash just shooting a "so I'm non binary" is very realistic for someone that is struggling with it and just doesn't know how to talk about it... There are very cringe and bad dialogue when it comes to Taash but I honestly don't think that one deserves all the hate

      @@ValexLM It's not bad. But i think it's not a good way to start a conversation. They can write off a better way and Taash can bring that story up to her mother.
