  • As India’s economy continues to grow, can the world’s most populous country truly replicate China's success of the past decades? Should India even imitate China? Maybe not, says our guest on this episode, Alicia García Herrero, Hong Kong-based Chief Economist for Asia-Pacific at French investment bank Natixis, and Senior Fellow at European think tank Breugel.
Alicia discusses the key differences between the two countries, talks about if the world is even looking for a new China, and provides insights on what economic policies could drive India’s continued growth, especially as the country enters a second decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. West 🤠 have never respected India 🇮🇳 despite it's successes.
West 🤠 never thought India would be a survive ( too diverse, chaotic and complex country ) in fact the West had betted on Pakistan 🇵🇰, as more viable. Everyone thought India 🇮🇳 would break 💥 up soon 🔜
Now let us discuss successes of India
      1. SURVIVAL
India Survived despite having a large Muslim population and a Terrorist country with OSAMA as its neighbour.
West never viewed India as more relevant then Pakistan which explains large Pakistani diaspora in UK. Rishi Sunak and his ancestors were never Indians. His parents emigrated from Tanzania 🇹🇿 in Africa before that they lived in Modern day Pakistan.
      2. India has managed to maintain its democracy.....all countries including USA, Japan, Germany or UK were not democracy when they were developing.
But the miracle did happen in India, Imagine today a large number of Indians are uneducated and poor yet they vote and decide their rulers in a democracy. All countries of Asia, South America, Latin America and Africa WITHOUT EXCEPTION turned to dictatorships. Even Europe had dictatorships Luke Romania, Spain and Stalinist Russia
Economic well being is important so are political rights. Ask someone in China ( now Hong Kong too) who doesn't have it.
I am sure India will do better but surpassing any country is not our goal. We want development with dignity. The way China has developed it has become more like a manufacturing unit or warehouse of the west. There is just too much dependence. They produce items for Western Consumption. The supply chain she talks about can also be a problem when some one like Trump assumes presidency. He started the trade wars and all this supply chain and millions of Chinese were thrown out of work. India on the other hand is focused first on its domestic market and then on foreign market or exports. This way Trump action will not disrupt 📊 our economy. Modi is in 3rd term and he has been talking of manufacturing in his 1st term. Today India is second largest producer of Mobile 📱, Cars and Solar panels etc.
India is slow but steady like the turtle 🐢 in the race. We unlike China don't want to be too much depended on West for our exports. We also wish the best for China 🇨🇳 the hare 🐰

I think you’ve highlighted a very important and overlooked point , which totally makes sense. More analysts should be looking at how this factor will impact on India’s future progress. Here in South Africa, we have had recent history of State capture by a politically-connected Indian billionaire through bribery of corrupt politicians, with the purpose of monopolising State tenders through shell companies. If this same practice is common in India, then on the basis of this one factor I don’t believe that India will progress much. It needs to clean up its political and business relationships as a matter of prime importance. China has managed to crack down on such corruption, but if it hadn’t done so, we wouldn’t even be talking of China as the superpower it is today.

Absolutely agreed !! I believe these kinds of narratives are sown on purpose - the principle of ‘divide and conquer’ was successfully applied by western colonial powers for centuries, and is still in use to this day. Just imagine if India and China were to form the close partnership such as that has recently formed between Russia and China. Now THAT would be an unstoppable power the likes of which this world has never seen before ! I happen to be Chinese (born and living in South Africa), and I am happy irrespective of if China or India progresses - remember that each country has massive populations of 1.4 billion people. If they BOTH progress, that means that 2.8 billion people on this planet have a better chance at feeding their families, clothing and educating themselves, and living a better life. China's success is the result of capable and competent government and hard working people. Chinese government has successfully combined capitalist and communist systems and made a system that fits China's own tradition, culture and development stage. China's step by step, region by region approach worked very well. China's flexibility and versatile economic policies are also the key factor for China's success. Chinese government is a very much people oriented government who puts the needs of its people at first priority. Every step of the economic development in China, benefits to its people always put on as first priority. That is the reason, all Chinese people have been benefited tremendously from China's development and modernization took place in the last 40 years or so. China has lifted extreme poverty in the country. This is a great contribution not only for China but for the world. China does not need assistance from UN on food products but India does. China took away the burden from UN. Unlike the West who got rich and powerful by invading, looting, genocide and destroying other countries, rising China did not do any of that.

China has routine elections to select qualified local officials at the village level. If those locals are good, they will be promoted to manage larger areas with greater responsibility. Chinese governance is professional and meritocratic, following the bureaucratic tradition going back to 221 BC. The Chinese have had the unification concept for roughly 3,000 years, and were first unified over 2,000 years ago. India was formed externally, and doesn't have the same concepts in their culture.
If India is to compete with China, they're going to have to push education and professionalism much harder.

China doesn't all these obstacles to built up the nation economically and financially in just a short period of 60 years. China swallowed with great pain and sacrifices to provide the world with cheap goods but learned hard and fast to develop its own industry base. Today it has established a complete industrial supply chain no other country can rival or imitate to produce goods efficiently and effectively. Therefore besides all India internal nightmare, it will be more than impossible to establish a equal efficient supply chain to outdo China. In history, China has repeatedly recognized and sincerely worshiped India as its teacher. You can cite Buddhism, architecture, literature, etc. as examples. Throughout its five thousand years of history, China has never lacked its own originality, but the Chinese have always been willing to learn from other civilizations and wisdom they came into contact with. Somehow the social mentality in India is different. India prefers to act like a student to a certain group of people and like a master or teacher to others. The fundamental reason for this phenomenon is that the Chinese believe that everyone is equal, and there are always opportunities for people to learn from each other, help each other, and repay each other. Indians, on the other hand, until recently still believed that people should be divided into classes according to the nobility score they were born with.

    2) India shd focus on manufacturing and local supply leadership. But here sphere of China supply dominance will exist.

Also according to the Indians themselves, under Modi, bribery is now normalised and worse than ever. Before Modi, it was still viewed as not a good thing but expected. Now EVERY public official expects a a large bribe openly. Any time they're not happy, they can demand bigger bribes or your electricity during peak manufacturing hours can mysteriously disappear. This is just one example. Also because they haven't invested much in education, there is not much of a work ethic. Rule of law is very weak. Lots of stories of women going to the police station to report a rape and get gang raped by the police themselves. Imagine if you piss off the cops in the region where your business/factory is located. Lots of problems they need to overcome.

India on the other hand pursues a service based industry during the 1940s when they are technologically low and poor as well after independence. IQ matters. Now, India is focusing on manufacturing and trying to copy China's success but it is too late. China has move on to from low tech manufacturing to high tech manufacuring such as solar panels, EV vehicles and EV batteries, aviation, consumer drones etc. and so on. Modi’s narrow victory highlights the “peoples” dissatisfaction with his policies and belief that he has deserted them.
There was no improvement in the quality of life for the average Indian family under his leadership.
Racism, crime and violence, and societal strife continues. Government corruption continues unabated. Lawfare is rampant.
We all know in practice India is not a democracy.
India’s governance model is “technically” incapable of meeting the needs of its economy and people and lacks skilled technocrats at almost every level to professionally address its needs.
It will take decades to bring its infrastructure and supply chains anywhere near that of China’s. China is already leading the 4th Industrial Revolution and this lead is “increasing at the speed of ‘China’ light”.
Its educational system is decrepit, requiring decades to rework along with creating a paradigm shift in the peoples attitudes toward higher education.
India is a country who takes from the world and gives nothing back treating outsiders with distain and contempt.
Its increasing support for Western militarization to contain China is making other countries in the region nervous, uncomfortable with a growing mistrust of India and its intent as a BRICS+ member.
There is growing sentiment that it might be best for India to leave BRICS+.

India is negotiating a string of free trade agreements. So it's a little wrong to assume that import tariffs will remain as is. They have had massive direct foreign investment for IT, data centres,...and digital and food startups are growing at a crazy scale. Also Indians can think/are allowed to think for themselves freely - something rather limited in China. India can have China's momentum, there's no need to be the next China. Also they have large (very succesful) immigrant communities everywhere. That's already flowing back to India. Whereas it tends to flow out of China for all government nonsensical reasons. Whenever the financial news talk, USA and China are always in the picture. Why? Because they are #1 and #2 biggest economy of the world. The #3 and #4 biggest economy of the world, either Germany or Japan, rarely compares themselves against China or USA. Why you may ask? Because they know their limits. Their GDP is nowhere near China or USA. On the other hand, the 5th largest economy of the world, India, is always pitting themselves against China despite having lower GDP than Germany and Japan. I guess that is the difference in culture. The braggart culture versus the humility culture. Why do they brag? Because the only way way India could stays relevant on the Global Financial Stage is to pit themselves against China all the time so that they could have a share of China's limelight. For your information, from the latest data from World Bank 2022,
Year 1962 India's GDP = 42.16 billion (almost similar GDP to China)
Year 1962 China's GDP = 47.21 billion (almost similar GDP to India)
    Year 2022 |ndia's GDP = 3.42 trillion
    Year 2022 China's GDP = 17.96 trillion
    Source: World Bank
China's economy is 5 times plus of |ndia, 17.96 T versus 3.42 T. Is there any comparison?Indians claimed to be the "World's Fastest Growing Economy"? 🤭🤣🤥I know what you are going to say, Indian bots, and you will say that India's growth rate is greater than China but please learn some basic math.
    Calculations:
China's growth of 5% (for example) from a very big economy of 17.96 Trillion economy = 0.898 trillion incremental GDP
India's GDP growth of 7% (for example) from a very small economy of 3.42 Trillion economy = 0.239 Trillion incremental GDP
Real growth of China = 0.898/0.239 = 3.75 times BIGGER than India's growth.
That is why math and IQ is very important. 😏😅

The point not highlighted enough to India's inevitable rise is China.
It's not China vs India which is the West's narrative. It's China +India which the West assiduously tries to prevent.
A point will be reached when India needs huge markets for its industrial outputs - and the biggest market is just next door. The border disputes and the West's divide and rule playbook will not be enough to restrain the increasing economic necessity to grow. It was the same when Japan + SK + Taiwan + Singapore fueled the rise of China in the early waves. China has fueled the rise of many global south nations thereafter.
When India is ready, it will be next. Then its take-off with China will be unstoppable.

Historical economical facts of India and China: A tale of arrogance and talking versus humility and actions.
    1) India joined WTO earlier than China. 1995 vs 2001. India had a head start advantage.
    2) India gained independence in 1947, 2 years earlier than China (civil war). India had a head start advantage.
    3) India's GDP was higher than China only because of the "British India" 's leadership.
    4) After the British left India in 1947, India could only compete against China fair and square based on their true capabilities. Please note that India's GDP is much higher than China when both received their independence. It is the Indian leadership versus the Chinese leadership from this point onwards.
    5) The GDP gap between China and India narrows down and China caught up with India during the 1980s.
    6) 1980s is a very crucial period because it is the only period in history whereby both countries started at the same starting point of the GDP race after independence.
    7) Fast forward today, China's GDP became 5+ times more than |ndia today. This is the difference between the Chinese GDP miracle versus the Indian GDP miracle.
    8) Despite all these facts, India's leaders claimed to be the "World Fastest Growing Economy" and a superpower.
    9) China's leaders claimed to be a developing country and has never claimed to be a superpower.

I can think of a couple reasons for India's poor economy right away and that is 1) culture. For a country with a young and growing population, they still allow the caste to exist and that results in a large portion of the younger population extremely poor, with little education, high infant mortality and groups of people fighting against other of their fellow citizens. Acid and gasoline burnings of young women are still practiced today. Recently a young woman was raped and drug through the streets of her village while everyone just stood and watched. Only because someone recorded it on their cell phone and then posted it, did police finally come to arrest the man. Only then did Modi also make a public statement, all because it was shown on youtube. Now second 2) Working environment and attracting new manufacturing business investments. India has had foreign companies try to setup manufacturing facilities there. Ford Motor Company, Vodafone, General Motors, BYD, Wistron, about 2,783 foreign multinational corporations have left India between 2014 and 2021, when about 11,000 of such companies entered India during the same time-frame. That's 25% of companies left in just 7 years, not a good track record. And looking at some of the reasons, from retroactive tax law changes causing billions in fines, business law in India has hundreds of issues requiring jail time and the Indian government has trumped up charges to threaten jail time if large illegal fines aren't paid, forced sales of foreign entities to Indian companies to increase India's market share such as the Wistron sale, and on and on. It seems some foreign investments work out, but strategic investors are staying away for now.

Very frank and informative episode, you mentioned India's internal challenges over education, domestic saving, lowering tariff, manufacturing sector, joining RCEP to be in its supply chain. Alicia had one valuable reminder to India: globalization is over, India has to find its new model to grow.

I can answer something about your explanation.
Not Joining RCEP- Because India has FTA with almost all RCEP countries except China.
Domestic Saving- Since last 5 years Indians investing in retail and equities are increased exponentially. For example. Start-up in 2016- 5000 but now in 2024- 120000 with 150 unicorns already.
Manufacturing is now growing at 11% per annum.
Education reforms must be there specifically in History.
But I can surely say that India will not be next China but India will be India.

Simply because of its own national and cultural peculiarities and especially its social discriminatory system, even after 2 centuries from now, India will not even reach the current level of China's deveopment.

If someone have basic knowledge of how development works easy in dictatorship but slow in democracy as well as china globalize 15-20 years earlier than india and actual development started in 2016 in india so it takes time to be developed like china but its not impossible as dont forget china also was nothing before 10-12 years

If you see how countries that have the same culture as China like japan Korea Taiwan Singapore you will notice that those countries had dictator as their leaders when they grew alot, India don't have the same culture so india will never grow like those sinopshere countries. India should focus on doing better than Bangladesh, because one big factor is the iq lever of your country and those of the sinopshere countries

There were 565 Princely States in 1946.What Nehru inherited from the colonial masters was only 1/3 the size of modern |ndia, which was basically Uttar Pradesh-Haryana-Bihar, which have a lot of people. He also inherited the colonial army and navy. With army and navy in hand, *Nehru coerced all the princely states to join his empire.* In July 1946, he warned that no princely state could militarily withstand the army of an independent India. By January 1947, Nehru clearly stated that the concept of the divine right of kings would not be accepted in independent India. Further escalating his approach, in May 1947, Nehru declared that any princely state refusing to join the Constituent Assembly of India would be treated as an enemy state.....That's why India is so prickly about sovereignty and having its claims challenged. If they don't keep a lid on things, their empire could collapse.

The greatest resource a country possess is its human resources. And, there is no comparison between India and any other country in terms of number and quality of human resources. Indian people have great mind, are hard-working, passionate and creative. The only things holding us back are corruption and inability of the government to keep these minds at home, working for India. Most of the creative minds are serving foreign nations such as USA, Canada, Germany, UK, Japan, middle east, Australia and many other developed nations as such. But in all certainty, India has greater potential than China and any other nation and will surely be better in most terms in coming 30 years. But government has to be strong and corruption free to achieve this, which is the biggest resistance in rapid development of India.

India cannot replicate China's economic success. First of all, Indians are too proud of themselves to learn from others especially its immediate big neighbor which India considers hostile. Secondly, India is so plight with all sorts of internal problems - to name a few - lack of infrastructure, most recently on 17/6/24, two trains collided in the Indian state of West Bengal; rampant corruption amonst the various political parties for example, allegations of cheating and corruption in national entrance exams for medical colleges; racial and religious violence - the major incidences include the 1969 Gujarat riots, 1984 Sikh massacre, the 1989 Bhagalpur riots, 1989 Kashmir violence, Godhra train burning, 2002 Gujarat riots, 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots and 2020 Delhi riots. India surpasses China to be the most populous nation in 2022 but the former will face mounting challenge to cater for the huge and explosive population in the next 20 years beyond.
