Man that Bugs Bunny music takes me back. We got our NES in early 1990 from a family memeber. That Christmas i got a few games and Bugs Bunny Birthday Bash was one of them. We had a lot of fun with it. Wasn't until much later that we learned it was a game many thought wasn't good.

No offense to AVGN, but most of the people who think it's a bad game never played the game and instead go with what an internet persona has said, like most dumb little kids do.
I thought the game was a little wonky and all, but I managed to make it halfway through the game with a good time.

I dunno why, but this particular video triggered a lost memory for me, thank you, i dunno if its because the video recordings made me think that far back, with a combination of talking about mom and pop rental store, but there is three big rental places i remember, block buster, Hollywood video, and Video Update, which later I believe anyways, was bought out by Movie Gallery, ( i say that because some of the stuff i rented from movie gallery still had video update stickers on the games and movies) also the only rental place that had more then one location, that kept old games up for rent through the 6th gen era which they shut down shortly after 7th gen came out, also still rented vhs. But back to the Memory you triggered, it was the first rental place i remember, it was poorly lit/ black lit store with swirly carpet like an arcade/ movie theater, that glowed in the black light but the owners where really friendly, and always gave me a box of candy of my choice every time my parents and i went there. it was the only place i remember till block buster(late 90's) that rented out game boy games, they even rented out games for systems that i didn't even know what they where till i became older, they had 2600, 5200, 7800, CDI 3DO, Genesis, Gameboy, SNES, NES, Jaguar, Lynx, Game Gear games in the early 90's was kinda a big deal to see that many options. This place was called MARIOS, shut down in 1995 i believe the owners where kinda old from what i remember, wife and husband had to be atleast in there 50's maybe older. but man i forgot all about that. A really cool rental store in robbinsdale minnesota still is alive and well called video universe they have ALOT, of generations of movies and games, even had beta tapes for rent lol, has all kinds of pictures online, just google em, i use to visit there a lot before moving out of state

  • @chrisrj9871
    @chrisrj9871 Год назад

First video game I ever beat was Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, around the same time. I remember staying up the whole night playing the game, Game-Over'ing a lot of times but writing the password in each time. My mom and dad were watching in the doorway as I was at the TV, my big brother in the same room. I made it all the way to the end, standing at the top, then the ending screen came on, I was like "hey I made it" and the whole family cheered and hugged each other.
So yeah, AVGN may have forced an entire generation that never grew up with the game to hate it without actually playing it... simply because video games in 1990 didn't have advanced endings like they do now... but that was a magical moment for me. It feels like magical moments like those just don't exist anymore.

This video made my eyes melt. My childhood best friend just passed away. Every time we had a sleep over, we played Contra, Mario 1, 2 and 3, ninja gaiden, batman, ninja turtles, punch out, etc etc. But this game was the one we played every single night. Why? Cause it was the first one we beat together, taking turns each time we lose a life. The feeling was just out of this world for both of us.

Just the fact that Nintendo Power sent a letter of response to you is awesome! I once submitted a letter for their "Classified Information" section for Batman Returns on SNES. They didn't use my letter and, as far as I know, they never responded to me. But the mere idea that regular kids and teens could write to them and possibly be featured in an issue was such a big deal!
I remember renting Birthday Blowout back in 1990. I don't remember if I finished it but I enjoyed it all the same. It's not the "trash game" that some folks like to say it is. And for what it is, I've also always liked Crazy Castle, too.

Not nearly as impressive as your memories since I'm about 10 years older than you, lol, but I still thought the game was perfectly fine (especially for a rental 😝). Going through these nearly 30 year old tapes has been a blast for me. We never had home video equipment, like a camcorder, so these tapes are the closest things I have to an archive like yours! Yo Tyler, I can remember calling into a code center of some kind when I was younger for nba jam t.e. It was for an unlockable character code. They must have asked for my address but I certainly don't remember giving them that information. But as I'm sure you've experienced, being so overjoyed getting some critical information you were looking for, everything else takes a backseat. Nonetheless, I to this day still have a very large poster of nba jam with ALL of the unlockable content and characters!! It is one of the coolest things I ever got from acclaim. So much like your want for Nintendo power I too achieved a really cool memory and poster! As always, keep up the great work!

I had this game and beat it back in the day. I usually tried to "brute force" my way through games and didn't exhibit much in the way of problem solving when I hit a difficulty spike in games, so it was a big deal when I beat a game. It was actually really easy, looking back on it. Maybe the game is objectively bad, but my cousins and I had fun with it as kids, which is what matters.

Your dad was so proud to be your dad, and I love that.... I remember my mom playing this game when I was a kid.- That shameless Warner Bros. branding though, hah.

I always wondered what the criteria was to get published in the magazine. Especially the letters section. I used to read those and say cmon my letter was better than that! As for high scores I think if you could get a clear photo of the tv that’s a bigger W than finishing any game.

Awesome episode. I actually did have Birthday Blowout when I was a kid. I really liked the game! It was easy but still a lot of fun. I also remember the hoopla over Bugs Bunny's 50th birthday. I still have the talking 50th Birthday Bugs Bunny plush doll that my mom bought me for Christmas that year. There was also a sticker album released for the event and a brand new Bugs Bunny cartoon short that they played in theaters (it played before 'The Neverending Story part 2'), the first in almost 30 years! Fun memories.

I never tried to get published in NP. I did write Nintendo a song about Super Metroid and DKC and sent it to them and they not only wrote me back they said they liked the song. Which is one of the many reasons to this day I still love Nintendo. I however was published in EGM (SCIV issue, 2003 I think). A magazine I idolized growing up. I sent them a song too but they misquoted the Konami code in my song. I mean what gamer doesn't know that code? So yeah they went out of their way to make fun of me. But it was cool being published.

Looking at the gameplay, Birthday Blowout never seemed _as_ bad as the AVGN made it out to be. And honestly, with my personal lack of skill, it looks easy enough (especially for an NES game) for me to wanna give it a shot at some point. Great video as per usual, Tyler!

I grew up with this game. It's as nostalgic as smb3 to me. It's a fantastic game with challenge and a killer soundtrack.

Great video. I remember the game being pretty good from what I played. Also enjoyed and beat Crazy Castle.
I have memory of Crazy Castle for the NES since a friend owned it. I later beat it on emulation. I also tried birthday blowout very briefly on emulation and it seemed pretty solid. Nostalgia is huge when it comes to how we view certain games. One of my favorite NES games is Jackal for the single player and Co op, but had I owned Contra first I may have viewed things differently. Especially had I not played Jackal during the early NES years.

Thanks! I loved Crazy Castle. I talked about it longer in the raw footage of this video but cut it out to stay on topic.
Also - Jackal is a GREAT NES game!

@@MyRetroLife Very nice. The first Crazy Castle on gameboy was a nice game too. I will have to beat Birthday Blowout.
I have amazing memories of Jackal. I used to bring the box into my second grade class and just look at it all the time. Didnt get alot of games often so I would really be fixated on some of the packaging, ha ha. Id be thinking all day about getting back to play games like Super Mario Bros., Jackal, etc. Mike Tysons Punchout is another top game for me. Jackal was tough for me as a kid and couldnt beat it but always got far. Especially in Co Op. It was a more tactical slow paced game where you could plan your movement but with great action, music. It was always exciting. Contra wouldve probably been way too hard for me back then but I did really like it when I rented it. Recently I 1 CC'd Jackal and it was great to revisit. Still holds up.

Not Many people have a letter from Nintendo Power mailed back. Did it have like an official letterhead or anything like that?

I never played this game, but there are these two Jimmy Neutron PC games that I used to adore.
In hindsight, they’re pretty wretched: Terrible graphics (even for 2001-02), awful tank controls (mind you, these were 3D platformers), rough sound, and just overall really crappy....
And yet, I honestly adore them! They were so fun to little me, and the exploration of various Jimmy Neutron locations that I just adored from the movie/show was (and still kinda is) super cool to me.

It's too bad they didn't print your picture or list you in the achievements. The only success I had with Nintendo Power was winning the 2nd place contest where you filled out the card. It was for a copy of Battletoads as well as an ugly Battletoads sweater (which I might still have packed away in storage). I already owned the game so I hung on to it until Star Wars came out for the NES then traded it in for that at a K-Mart. No receipt was needed as it was a trade.

Honest perspectives. Some may watch this with a sense of envy, "entitlement". As someone who was a child, I hope your family and you are well.
Kudos to you and your parents, the kindness in one you childhood past-times is potentially paying off as an adult.
