I believe you were trying to get out "barbershop quartet". The Doobie Brothers were close but as far as I know never tried for or managed the "fifth voice" a real barbershop quartet can do. (That's when their voices' harmonies merge into what sounds like a fifth singer's voice.)
Did you catch the lyrics. Ol black water, keep on running, Mississippi moon going to keep shining on me. Moon Shine is the most potent hard liquor you'll ever drink. The song is about running and drinking moonshine.
The " black guy " you speak of was the great bass player Tiran Porter...He did sing the low harmonies and he was a student in my mom's high school English class in LA !
The vocalist here is Patrick Simmons, which is the second one from the right. I think this is before Michael McDonald joined the band. He's whos voice sounds kind of cottony. He had a solo album with a good song called, "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)."
Michael McDonald also had a stint with the group Chicago & Steely Dan's "Peg" as the chorus background vocals and then also had a duet hit in the mid to late 80's with Patti Labelle called "On My Own"
🌟Here's my perfect reaction list🌟 Tom Johnson - Doobie Brothers: "China Grove" "Listen To The Music" "Long Train Runnin" Michael w/ Doobie Brothers "Takin It To The Streets" "Minute By Minute" "You Belong To Me" Michael Solo: "Keep Forgettin" "Yo Mo Be There" w/ James Ingram "On My Own" w/Patty LaBelle "Sweet Freedom"

The voice you're looking for is MICHAEL MCDONALD. Literally, one of the most recognizable voices in the business. The original singer for The DB was Tom Johnson ("Listen To The Music", "China Grove", & "Long Train Runnin'") "Black Water" was lead by Patrick Simmons (guitar), who wrote it & was the first of the two of two hits in 1975. 🌟🌟🌟Michael McDonald: who had sang with Steely Dan joined as a fill in for Tom but his vocals, well, they kept him. ("Takin It To The Streets", "Minute By Minute", & "What A Fool Believes" - which you heard.) I will say this - hardcore DB fans seem to gravitate to Tom Johnson. Everyone always loves an original, right? Michael's solo career is legendary: "KEEP FORGETTIN" Lots of people have sampled it. The one every immediately thinks of is the very famous song "Regulate" by Warren G & Nate Dogg. It's a must hear after this even though they stole it. Yep, they had to pay up. "Yo Mo Be There" w/ James Ingram "On My Own" w/Patty LaBelle "Sweet Freedom" All songs mentioned are big songs, Van & should be reacted to. Tom has the original DB sound & they are bangers. Michael brought a different sound & they are hits. Solo - he kills it. There's too many songs to name where he is background. Believe me, now that you know the voice, you'll know it when you hear it. 😉

There are two iterations of The Doobie Brothers: the Tom Johnson years and the Michael McDonald years. Yes, Tom rejoined the group after he recovered from his illness, but the difference in sound between the two leads is palpable. I MUCH prefer the TJ years. Their early stuff is just amazing. And this is my favorite DB song by far. Thanks for the reaction. I loved watching your eyes during the outro.
I agree, the TJ years were great...because they were one of the groundbreaking bands who created the standards others have since, tried to meet. There are so many elements that went into the DB, that made them the iconic band they are. When MM came in, he saved the band. His lead, his songs, the inspiration that there would be DB music still, yet and again. In the time between when TJ left and MM started, the DB sucked as a live band. Understandable, and for a while they had the reputation of being a studio only band. I like all the iterations of the DB. MM evolved their music, refined their sound. I’m particularly fond of a DB horn player, the late Cornelius Bumpus. After Corny left the DB he played with Steely Dan for many years. Like the times they’re from, a point came when they were forced to adapt and change to just to survive. Thankfully, it clicked. They more than survived, they flourished with a bold new sound, while retaining the charm of the DB. One of my all time favs!
Yup, the TJ years definitely win out for the overall vibe of the music. That's not to take anything away from MM, because his voice is amazing in its own right, but I just felt that the Doobies vibe changed with him in a direction that wasn't as good--not bad, just not as good.

Caught the 2024 tour last night in Raleigh, NC. Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, and Michael McDonald were all there, with Steve Winwood opening the show. What a fabulous concert! Loved it.
From a Southerner for 57 years on the MS Gulf Coast, i can promise you catfish don’t jump but Mullet do: I grew up with the Doobies and they are what got me through school back in the day. They are down to Earth and tell it as they experience it. Enjoyed your reaction! Thank you.
The best album for headphones ever - "What Were Once Vices Are Now habits" - I had the pleasure of buying the album first edition in 1974 and flat wore it out. Great reaction, your good...
This is one of my FSOAT's (Favorite Songs of All Time). I remember it playing on the juke box in the junior high commons area back in about 1975. Oh, and Barbershop Quartet is what you're thinking of, I beleive.
Somehow The Doobie Brothers, no matter who was leading the group or singing, made music you want to listen to. I mean music wise and lyric meaning wise. Their 2010 album has just as many musical and lyric meaningful songs on it as their earlier works. I have not bought their latest album, but will, even if I have not had a chance to hear any selections: They are that good, 50+ years later!
Listen for this acapella gem: "I wanna honkey tonk, honkey tonk, honkey tonk... with you all night long." The song is one of the best examples of vocal musical rounds ever recorded by a rock band. By the end, there must be eight or ten syncopated voices some going in perfectly different directions. It deservedly sailed to the top of the charts and stayed there for a LONG time. Way before Michael McDonald, these dudes had a list of radio/album hits as long as your leg. I say Tom Johnston is/has been the hardest working man in rock.
Fun side note: Frank Zappa's "Fine Girl" also goes round and round in the same manner but in a Frank Zappa way. He shows everyone how it's done... (Tinseltown Rebellion)
I was military police in Pearl Harbor in the mid to late 90's and The Doobie Brothers came and played on base and I volunteered to work security for them, got to meet them all and they were all very nice, very friendly kind hearted people. Glad I volunteered for that one😁
Michael McDonald also had a stint with the group Chicago & Steely Dan's "Peg" as the chorus background vocals and then also had a duet hit in the mid to late 80's with Patti Labelle called "On My Own"
You are correct, sir, that was a violin. Four is a quartet. But maybe you were thinking of an a capella group? I'd call what they were doing call and response. Love this song and the Doobies.
A "quartet," I believe, is what you're looking for. This is my favorite iteration of the band. My folks were big fans and took me to see them three times in the early to mid-seventies. Check out "Long Train Runnin'," or "Listen to the Music." ✌
Your parents sound like they were excellent parents! Any parents who loved the Doobie Brothers and actually took their kids to three of their concerts are alright in my book! 🎸🎸🎸 My parents were as square as square could be. My dad only listened to old time fiddle music from the Maritimes and my mom was too timid to sort herself out over music, afraid that my dad would have a fit, so they hardly listened to anything except country radio. And what I mentioned. I grew up in the 60s and 70s (born in 1958) on Motown and rock. What years those were for music!!! About the year 2000 or so my mom told me that she actually liked Elvis Presley back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. You could have pushed me over with a feather. She said my dad would have freaked out if she listened to him so she did it vicariously through my sisters' Elvis records. As I said, my dad was very square. In fact, that is an insult to squares. He was just a hill-billy red-neck for the most part, who thought he knew everything but hardly knew anything in reality. It is sad to have a parent like that. He hated rock and roll and called them "long haired hippie Christers!" With a curse. Anyway, as you can see I did not get along with him and didn't even much like him.
The Black man is Willie Weeks and he was a fire 🔥 bass player. One of my favorite bass players of all time! He’s featured pretty prominently in “Taking it to the streets”.
Hi Van, thanks for checking out original Doobie Brothers. Patrick Simmons sang lead on this song. Tom Johnston is the other voice you hear, along with most of the band harmonizing. To hear them rocking out you need to see their live performance of DANGEROUS at the Rocking Down the Highway: Wildlife Concert. Three guitarist each playing two guitars🎸. They are jamming out!!!! I love watching you get into the music. Oh, BTW that was a fiddle John Mc Fee was playing. On Dangerous he plays Dobro guitar 🎸. AMAZING!!! Thanks. Janet from Louisiana ☮🖤🤘
Been a fan since 1971 and got to see them live in 73 along with Ten Years After and Rare Earth back then we had some great concerts and some even greater music glad to see you young people discovering it
Obsessed! I was obsessed with this song when it came out! It was the very first single I bought and I'd played it over and over and over on my record player. Still a favorite!
Michael McDonald did a duet with Patti LaBelle called “on my own“ Doobie Brothers head three singers Tommy Johnston, Patrick Simmons and then when Tommy left the band Michael McDonald was brought on board.
Miss my dad. Shitty old Ford pickup going to hard labor jobs rocking out to this. We sang back and forth on this one. Music like this can bring us all together
Great song. It's the really long-haired blond guy singing and playing guitar. Check out the live video. There's also a video of this song they did "in isolation." They sound as good now as back then.
I saw them with my parents in 1978 I think Eddie Money was the opening act. It was at the New Haven CT colosseum. What a great concert at 11 years old. There were tons of beach balls and frisbees ,but what they had the most of was weed. Joints were being passed around from person to person. Never smell it before and asked what the smell was..They just laughed. Maybe they had some too. That was the original members I believe at that time I believe. Great music. Brings back soo many memories
This whole album is their finest work they ever put out. And that is saying something considering almost every album they put out had at least two hits. A remarkablely talented and unique rock and roll band
The guy on the extreme left is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. He played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. Now you'd probably see him testifying in front of congress on missile defense technology.
The Black one is Tiran Porter, he doesn't sing lead. But he provides the most memorable bass lines! The bass on "Long Train Runnin'" (sung by Tom Johnston) and "Takin' it to the Streets" (sung by Michael McDonald) will stick with you forever.
He did sing lead occasionally on songs he wrote. "Need a Lady" from Livin' on the Fault Line album is him singing lead. But he was known more for his bass playing, for sure.
The voice in the other song is Michael McDonald This song has different lead Check out I keep forgetting by Michael mcdonald Or sweet freedom Is a movie this song is in called running scared Gregory hinze and Billy crystal it's good flick
You are thinking about Michael McDonald with What A Fool Believes, who is an amazing vocalist. This song is from before he joined the band. The lead singer for this is Pat Simmons, who isn't black, and neither is Michael McDonald. Check out some of their live videos and you will see. Michael McDonald also had a huge hit with Patti LaBelle named "On My Own", which was a tremendous hit for both of them. He also did an album of Motown hits. And it is a violin, played by John McFee.
If you are in a tux or evening gown or playing a classical piece it's a violin. Otherwise it's a fiddle LOL. Great harmonies is a trademark of this band.
Yes, Violin vs guitar. Reminds me of fishing 🙂. I know the song, but I don't know much about it lyric-wise. Always thought the melody was pleasant. And the often-present underlying "Funk" in the 70s and 80s music. Peace, Love!
They are kind of singing at the end "a round." It's a type of harmony where one member sings the beginning of a verse and then a few beats later a response is played and this is done over again where the second time around starts before the response is finished. The best known version of a round is Row Row your Boat.
Wanna honky-tonk, honky-tonk, honky-tonk....all night long....yeah. Remember singing this back & forth with my girls back in 1977 while cruising the back roads with our beers & smoking that weed. Those were good times 😁
You all are the Sugar Honey Iced Tea!!! Super Appreciative of our connection.

From a Southerner for 57 years on the MS Gulf Coast, i can promise you catfish don’t jump but Mullet do: I grew up with the Doobies and they are what got me through school back in the day. They are down to Earth and tell it as they experience it. Enjoyed your reaction! Thank you.
I'm born 1959 and our music was the shit however I was more into Blues.. love southern music..
"a bad year for labour and a good year for wine", per Post WWII Blues by Al Stewart
"Dark Eyed Cajun Woman" is an excellent blues song by the Doobie Brothers from "The Captain and Me."
I enjoyed your reaction so much. Finding out how cool it is to listen to all this old music with headphones. Makes a big difference.
The best album for headphones ever - "What Were Once Vices Are Now habits" - I had the pleasure of buying the album first edition in 1974 and flat wore it out. Great reaction, your good...
It's your good ear for music . You appreciate so well. If someone hasn't said 4 singers is a quartet
I have always loves this song and the Doobie brothers
This is one of my FSOAT's (Favorite Songs of All Time). I remember it playing on the juke box in the junior high commons area back in about 1975.
Oh, and Barbershop Quartet is what you're thinking of, I beleive.
'Pretty Dope' is a great way to describe the Doobie Brothers.
There is no one singer in this group. You will learn the difference in voices and who it is.
They did a live version of this from their homes during the pandemic quarantine. 40 yars later and they still sound the same.
Please check out Steely Dan. I will personally guarantee that you will never be disappointed. 🌺✌️
Listen for this acapella gem:
"I wanna honkey tonk, honkey tonk, honkey tonk... with you all night long." The song is one of the best examples of vocal musical rounds ever recorded by a rock band.
Such a pretty song. I think it's Micheal McDonald's magical voice we are hearing. He makes singing sound so smooth and easy. Thank you.
My favorite Doobie Brothers song
They sound like they are having fun playing this.
Ooh!!! Love this song now and when it came out. Sitting in a circle all stoned and singing our hearts out. Funky Dixie land ...
Thank you so much for simply enjoying.
My parents were as square as square could be.
Feel good music
Takin it to the Streets live on Soundstage is exceptional. Extended version of that song. Amazing guitar solo by Skunk Baxter.
Been a fan since 1971 and got to see them live in 73 along with Ten Years After and Rare Earth back then we had some great concerts and some even greater music glad to see you young people discovering it
The Doobie Brothers tune to do is Long Train Running ( original studio version)
Obsessed! I was obsessed with this song when it came out! It was the very first single I bought and I'd played it over and over and over on my record player. Still a favorite!
His name is Michael McDonald. Great song he sings is, "Keep forgetting". You'll love it.
My favorite song by them.
This whole album is their finest work they ever put out. And that is saying something considering almost every album they put out had at least two hits. A remarkablely talented and unique rock and roll band
My father in law has a chest FULL of 45’s.
My dream is to have the money to get him an old school jutebox🌻
Ooh! This is a good one thank you!
Bless✨
Edit spelling but who cares lol “jukebox” 😎
LOVE The Doobie Brothers! One of the most fun harmonizing songs ever.
That's the cutest thing I've heard. Is that a violin. Lol
The guy on the extreme left is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. He played with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. Now you'd probably see him testifying in front of congress on missile defense technology.
Great reaction! Gotta do Doobie Brothers' - Long Train Runnin' and Listen to the Music.
These guys was all bout making people happy and spreading love. We should be experts at this by today. What’s happened to this world?
This was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. Love some Doobies!! ✌❤
Me and my high school friends (all singers) used to walk through halls signing this.
Nice. Love the fiddle solo. They almost sound like they were rapping at one point. The harmony was nice.
Barbershop quartet.
This song is set in New Orleans. "Take that street car that's going Uptown". So any "seasoning" would probably be Tony Chacere's. 😊💜💚💛✌️
Or Slap Ya Mama!
I forgot how much I love the Doobie Brothers!!!
Great record! It's called a fiddle when it"a played like that. And I think the word you were thinking of is quartet.
Southern rock is always a great choice for just chilling
The voice in the other song is Michael McDonald
This song has different lead
Check out I keep forgetting by Michael mcdonald
Or sweet freedom
Is a movie this song is in called running scared
Gregory hinze and Billy crystal it's good flick
You are thinking about Michael McDonald with What A Fool Believes, who is an amazing vocalist. This song is from before he joined the band. The lead singer for this is Pat Simmons, who isn't black, and neither is Michael McDonald. Check out some of their live videos and you will see. Michael McDonald also had a huge hit with Patti LaBelle named "On My Own", which was a tremendous hit for both of them. He also did an album of Motown hits. And it is a violin, played by John McFee.
Yes I remember that's how I fell in love with anothother park another Sunday
If you are in a tux or evening gown or playing a classical piece it's a violin. Otherwise it's a fiddle LOL. Great harmonies is a trademark of this band.
If you're drinking champagne it's a violin. If you're drinking moonshine it's a fiddle.
Yes, Violin vs guitar. Reminds me of fishing 🙂. I know the song, but I don't know much about it lyric-wise. Always thought the melody was pleasant. And the often-present underlying "Funk" in the 70s and 80s music. Peace, Love!
Acapella is "voice only." QUARTET is name of 4 guys singing and harmonizing without any instrumental accompaniment.
thanks for reviewing this music from my youth and appreciating it in the same genuine way that I do!
They are kind of singing at the end "a round." It's a type of harmony where one member sings the beginning of a verse and then a few beats later a response is played and this is done over again where the second time around starts before the response is finished. The best known version of a round is Row Row your Boat.
I love all their songs.
🤩👍👍❤❤❤Black Water! One my top fave Doobie Brother songs from the early years✌🌼🌻🌼
You're thinking of a quartet. The call and response of the violin and guitar is awesome! This song is at the top of my feel good music
Wanna honky-tonk, honky-tonk, honky-tonk....all night long....yeah. Remember singing this back & forth with my girls back in 1977 while cruising the back roads with our beers & smoking that weed. Those were good times 😁
Fiddle all the way! (Same thing as violin 😎) imma sucker for a good fiddle
