Sea of Souls sounds great. I'd seen it on twitter and (I think?) interacted with the author who seemed super nice if I recall (blaming SOFBO for the lack of sleep and gradual erosion of my memory, haha). Definitely even more excited now.
The author has done a segment in a recent author showcase on my channel as well, talking about the book in her own words. I'll recommend this one to anyone though!
What I love about book tube and reviews is discovering authors I've never heard about. I never see any talk about N. C. Scrimgeour in the Twitter community. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong spot. She seems like an interesting author and I've put Sea of Souls on my TBR. Thank you for the review!
Awesome! I hope you can pick it up and that you enjoy it if/when you do. N.C. Scrimgeour is active on Twitter as @scrimscribes. She has a sci-fi trilogy called "The Waystations Trilogy" that I'm starting next month (planned in before getting Sea of Souls, which was just a coincidence).
Thanks for sharing your months thoughts. Your comment on Obsidian Awakening is one of my main criticisms of darker fantasy. It happens far too often and feels like a trope at this stage - it’s crass and it seems like you should be able to find a better way to communicate that message without reverting to that. Tiamats Wrath was my favourite of the series, though i can totally see the time jump ruining the flow of the series. Looking forward to getting to Josh’s Ocean of Others. Happy September reading Dom 😎
Thanks Chris! And yeah, most people seem to be really pleased with Awakening, but then there are some who fall on the other side, like me. Funnily enough, those darker moments (of assault, primarily) seem to be a point of contention, depending on whether you liked the book overall or not. Typically, I've seen those who enjoyed it saying that those parts were really well done and tasteful, and were there for good reasons. Hard disagree from me, but that's the wonder of personal opinion.
Another great wrap-up, despite the mixed bag reads. I can totally see where you are coming from with Obsidian, even though I personally loved that book. You have me veryyyy excited about Sea of Souls though, I have heard nothing but amazing things about that one. The selkie lore sounds so interesting and refreshing! Can't wait to dive in (yes, pun intended) 🤣 Hope your Expanse journey will come to a good close this month, eager to hear your thoughts!
I hope so too, on The Expanse! Sea of Souls is a definite recommend, and one that I think you'll love too. I hope to have a dedicated review of that one soon.
This could be a good book for you then! Springtide Harvest by JD Mitchell and Paladin Unbound by Jeffrey Speight might also be good options to check out, if you haven't already.
I've reached a point where I wonder if Cahill's series is for me. There are parts of his books that make me put the books down. I would like them to be more consistent.
I’m curious how far you’ve read in the series. I agree about the inconsistency, there have been several spots I have considered stopping, but then I enjoy the next part. I’ve read The Fall, Of Blood and Fire, and am half way through Of Darkness and Light.
It's a difficult one. I am all for people putting books down if they aren't working, and finding something that (hopefully) does work - but if there are some parts that *are* working, that's when it becomes tough. Ultimately though, no matter what anyone else thinks of a book/series, they just won't be for everyone.
@@radudumanovschi3387 I found Of Blood and Fire the weakest book (like many others). Book 2 is a step up in the writing, but still a bit inconsistent. I am quite sure at this point that I will continue all the way through the series, and I DNF MANY books. So it is a real mixed bag for me. The story (plot) is very good. The inconsistency remains to some degree, in my opinion.
So great to hear your thoughts, Dom! Thanks for giving An Ocean of Others a go! 🙏😄
Thanks Josh, I'm just sorry it took me so long to get to it!
I enjoyed sea of souls too! Was so excited when I saw you add it on GoodReads!
Excellent! I though it was very fresh and exciting.

I've had my eye on An Ocean of Others for awhile. I've been kinda craving a fantasy book that felt like a fun D&D game. Might have to pick it up.

ODAL was the best so far for me, and The Exile for the novellas (but second overall, probably)

It is so hard to talk about any criticisms with The Ice without spoiling it.
Definitely, the shorter format comes into it, but those parts are intrinsically linked to the plot.
I so badly want to read it and see how in the world it's so highly rated on Goodreads. The rest of the series seemed to get so-so reviews.
