  • The University of Waterloo Station is a transit hub currently under construction as part of the ION Light Rail project, and will become the biggest bus terminal in Waterloo Region. The stations will offer connections between the ION light rail, GRT buses, GO Transit buses, Greyhound, and Megabus. We check in on the construction site to see how the station is progressing, and detail the features of the future transit hub.

I really hope that there’s a GO route towards a hamilton bus terminal: that was a huge problem for friends of mine who lived in Hamilton/Niagara.

Megabus had 3-4 trips daily between Kitchener and Hamilton up until July, in addition to a twice weekly trip from UW to Hamilton/Niagara. I’m hoping that if Megabus decides not to resume service, GO will opt to take it over. Kasper Transportation is also looking at starting a route from Guelph to Hamilton, which would connect with GO route 25 at Aberfoyle.

"Largest bus terminal in Waterloo region"
There are a few ways to measure this, but it's very likely that Ainslie terminal in Cambridge makes a good case for being the largest. It has, I think 12 platforms, so a similar in size, and with 10 GRT routes, far more routes, even accounting for no GO service. And (largely as a result of carrying the 302 ION BRT) probably more buses per hour, but I haven't looked it up. I am not sure of passenger numbers either.
Of course, it doesn't have an LRT station, and I don't believe it has intercity buses anymore.
Fairview mall also has 12 routes and an ION stop and makes a strong argument for largest.
The boardwalk and Doon Campus Conestoga College also have 9 connecting routes, although they are lower volume routes, even accounting for the iXpress routes.
That being said, the far more interesting story is why the station exists in the first place, and, at least in my opinion, it is as a result of the university administration being very anti-transit ....which is just insane for a University campus.
Buses stopping on Ring Rd. are more convenient for students AND for the LRT station, but the university administration, which has made no moves to restrict drivers from the ring road, have argued for the removal of buses for "safety"...even though it means students will have to cross Ring Rd (again, filled with drivers) instead of being deposited on the campus side of it. To say nothing of the fact that the LRT station could have been located at University Ave. (or Columbia) and avoided awkward interchanges entirely.
