In his first television interview since the CNN debate with Donald Trump, President Joe Biden dismissed his poor performance as a "bad episode" and took full responsibility for it.
Biden spoke with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday after an energetic rally with Democratic supporters, during which he affirmed his commitment to staying in the race.
Stephanopoulos immediately addressed last Thursday's debate, which had caused concern among Democratic lawmakers and pundits regarding Biden's campaign capabilities and potential for another term.
"Let's start with the debate. You and your team have said you had a bad night," Stephanopoulos began.
"Sure did," Biden replied.
Stephanopoulos then referenced a statement from former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who had been instrumental in passing some of Biden's key policies during his first two years in office.
"But your friend Nancy Pelosi actually framed the question that I think is on the minds of millions of Americans: Was this a bad episode or the sign of a more serious condition?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"It was a bad episode," Biden responded. "No indication of any serious condition. I was exhausted. I didn't listen to my instincts in terms of preparing and -- and a bad night."

Biden had traveled internationally in mid-June to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day in France. He spent nearly a week at Camp David afterward, preparing for the debate with his close advisers.
Stephanopoulos pressed further, "Why wasn't that enough rest time, enough recovery time?"
"Because I was sick. I was feeling terrible," Biden explained. "Matter of fact, the docs with me. I asked if they did a COVID test because they're trying to figure out what was wrong. They did a test to see whether or not I had some infection, you know, a virus. I didn't. I just had a really bad cold."
"Did you ever watch the debate afterwards?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"I don't think I did, no," Biden said.
When asked if he knew how poorly the debate was going while on stage, Biden admitted, "Yeah, look. The whole way I prepared, nobody's fault but mine. I prepared as I usually would, sitting down as I did with foreign leaders or the National Security Council for detailed discussions. And I realized partway through that the approach was wrong. But the fact is, what I looked at is that he also lied 28 times. The way the debate went, it was my fault, nobody else's fault."
"But it seemed like you were having trouble from the first question in, even before he spoke?" Stephanopoulos inquired.
"Well, I just had a bad night," Biden concluded.
ABC News offered a similar interview opportunity to Trump, but he declined.

stephanopoulos was not good. If that was a good interview then someone explain to me why there was no follow up when Biden said he wasn’t sure if he watched the debate? Any good interviewer would have made him explain that.
Also, why did he not ask about specific “points” Biden made in the debate? Why not ask what
Biden meant by “women are raping their sisters” when he was asked a question about abortion.
In fact why didn’t stephanopoulos play clips of the debate like normal interviews? If it is actually true that his family has kept him from watching the debate then it might have been eye opening for Biden to see himself like that.
This could have been a hall of fame interview and stephanopoulos didn’t deliver. How exactly was that a good interview? Ok I’m done venting

What struck me was that it took Biden 11 days to prepare for a debate that he failed miserable at and then another 7 days to prepare for a 22 minute inteview with a partisan interviewer which didn't exactly instill confidence in his ability to be president.
isn't mental agility we have a right to expect in a crisis? By definition it is with little or no time to mull it over. We either get a nut job or someone obviously in mental decline. Our government (read politicians) have really failed us to put up these two awful choices with the implication this is the best we have to offer

Agree, wholeheartedly, and think that you put having an open convention in such a positive positive spin for KH. It is scary where the parties at but they can do a short primary in weeks however many weeks they have. short circuiting democracy will not help the party or the candidate put this in the past… This is not political . My blind grandmother swore up and down that she was telling my grandfather with Alzheimer's how to drive and get places and his level of denial last night was reminiscent of those conversations people have had to have with loved ones.

Hard hitting and unbiased though, Stephanopolous the Bill Clinton Press Secretary guy, he just calls balls and strikes.
20 minutes filmed during the day and edited for TV. And they couldn't edit out the dementia facies, low quality vocal production, the word stumbles. It appears that he was drugged and likely had an earpiece in his right ear. Did you see the times when he would suddenly grin inappropriately? You know, as if someone was in his ear saying "smile" to end the frozen face?
Heard the first interview was so bad they couldn't even edit it to make it look even somewhat favorable. Take 2 must've been slightly less horrible.

Enjoyed your opinion. Two things to mention. For most of the American people it IS a political issue. It's the rise in prices for American families. It's the rise in gas prices in my area from $1.89 a gallon in early 2021 to $3.19 when I put gas in my car last week. We were self-sufficient in energy and Biden destroyed that. Being a life-long Texan and seeing the border crisis on the news everyday, it's horrible. It's the fact that the American taxpayer is having to foot the bill for billions of dollars in college loans because Biden is pandering to young voters. It's the foreign policy and military blunders. It's the fact that now we see there a huge question in who is actually running the country, especially if it's outside the hours of 10 and 4 and probably mostly during those hours also. Second thing and it's about Harris. When she was running for President she had to drop out of the race in December 2019 because she was only polling at 3%. Who would ever think it was a logical and sound decision to appoint her to the second highest position in the land with that kind of unfavorability? Well, that decision has now added chaos in this campaign season for the Dems.

Saw a poll where if Harris is the Presidential nominee, she would lose to Trump by at least 12 points (Biden would lose by at least 5 points). Harris as a VP was a serious mistake. I would say that it is not Biden's fault re the cost of living because it is the corporations that do the pricing of goods and services. Perhaps Biden should put in price controls like Nixon did in 1971. Harris as the nominee will be a disaster for the Democrats all the way down the ballot. One of the younger Democratic governors can be a more energetic and persuasive nominee. The Democrats need a nominee who can overwhelmingly expose the horrific fascist Project 2025 being implemented if Trump wins. Saw a YOU TUBE video where 41% of Germans polled said Trump would be a threat to world peace = but the Germans said that Putin and China's leader would harm world peace at only 7% in the polling. Amazing that the Germans are smarter than us Americans.

The questions--the whole interview was damage control/concerned with the electoral prospects of the Democratic Party as a whole. The problem IS that Biden is in no condition to be weilding the power that he has. We need interviews with cabinet officials and VP Harris to ask why they aren't invoking the 25th amendment for the good and safety of this country--and, by extension, the ENTIRE WORLD.
He's been lying and covering for Biden the whole time as well. So his a$$ is on the line asking with the rest of the complicit MSM. Hence the appearance of actual journalism.

Outstanding ideas Michael on how to move our country forward in a better direction.
He was avoiding the question, when he said "I don't remember" whether I watched the interview. eg Lying by avoiding - a typical politician strategy. He remembers. The bigger question is that he is just missing the import of the moment and missing on communication strategy, he had change course in this interview and avoid avoiding the question and be truthful. The polls show him behind, he needs to admit it and provide a plan to change it, not lie about it. He has slipped, and is frail, he needed to admit it and say that even in his fraility, he is better than Trump and he is capable still, and Kamala is good and available and he will step aside if needed. His communication team failed on strategy. They decided on a strategy of gaslighting and running out the clock.

@@Maria-ue2qd - People reach "too old" at different ages. No real purpose to get hung up on semantics. One person will say, "too old" to mean he no longer has the capability to do the job, and another person might use other language, such as mentally debillitated, or senile, or whatever. Not even the doctors agree. And I'd bet that Democrat doctors would be prone to say he was fit for the office.

While I agree that Harris shouldn't be handed it, I don't think that anyone significant would stand against her. It'd be similar to Hillary in 2016 where none of the big players wanted to get in. And because of the condensed time frame and none of these other potential candidates with a campaign infrastructure in place, they'll wait for a run at another time.
Suggestion for CNN: Have the Dems run a mini-primary. Get a group of would-be Presidents together, and have them work for some a**h*** boss. Have the thing on TV. And every week or so, have the boss look at the one performing the worst and yell out, "You're Fired!"

There's no guarantee that Biden won't do as poorly in the second debate this November as he did in the first.
Biden seemed surprised that Stephanopolus was not giving him the typical softball questions. He pressed him hard for answers and did not let him change the subject or lie. ABC has turned on Biden.
I think almost everything surprises Biden. The great thing about alzheimers' is that every day is literally a new day--new people, new surroundings, etc.

Trump left us with an 8 trillion dollar debt and 300,000 jobs LESS than when he came into office. He was handed a good economy from Obama, who was handed a shit economy from Bush. Democrats are historically better with the economy. Wages are finally outpacing inflation. 15 million new jobs, which is more than the last 3 republicans combined. 410ks are doing fantastic. The primary process is the time to figure it all out. The primary process is when you vet you candidate and make the tough enough to stand up to the tough questions. You had that and you chose Joe. What you failed to consider about the UK election is that the Party leaders were determined by the party in a convention well ahead of that six week election. So you’d need to include the time to conclude that process into your calculation to make it a more accurate comparison.
