Great spot, I have ridden through here dozens of times on the Metra and I live close to the CN line in Bartlett. Those diamonds really take a beating from all the traffic.
When we were there to see 4014, it was Metra, UP freights , lite engine moves, you name it. Plus CN cross-traffic! And I thought the NS Chicago Line was busy!
I have to ask. I have always wondered, isn't it safer and in a logic of physics that the engine be pulling the cars instead of pushing the cars? Usually in this situation Metra trains have an engine at both ends for return trips. Pushing seems unsafe and potential for accidents due to the stress of compressing the train instead of extending the train.
I'm not an expert at this but it actually wastes alot of diesel fuel if the locomotives were to be used a "wye" to turn the train around from a "Point A to Point B" destination. It's still safe for the Metra engines to be pushing the cars because they have "HEP or Head End Power" which a Cab Car is used. The Cab Car has the same functions as would a Metra engine would like having train brakes, a horn, a bell, throttle, and headlights. I apologize in advance if this isn't the right information but to answer your question, pushing cars by a Metra locomotive is safe.
It is a safety issue at Chicago. At Chicago Union Station (and Ogilvie Station where UP/old CNW), you don’t want a large number of running diesel locomotives (commuter trains) that are below city’s skyscrapers. It is also easier for unloading hundreds of passengers on AM rush hour. Chicago Union Station has to deal with inbound Amtrak trains (diesel in front) - BUT they minimize time to unload with train moved to Amtrak clean/process yards south of Union station.
United Railfan, I understand why the beginning sucked because of too many Metra trains. But I always film them since it was during the morning rush hour and there are some railfans that may care for Metra trains so I film them anyway plus sometimes weird things do happen whenever I film Metra trains. But glad you liked the video. -Andrew Mangalindan
We don't have a lot of hard drive space to put a whole train to record video. So the only case you will see the whole freight train in our videos is if the freight train is short enough. -Andrew Mangalindan
Yes, no one has to like what you like. If we like trains (which I do) let s like trains. Here is nothing wrong with it. If you did something stupid I wouldn’t say anything I’d just think that’s what you like
I used to live in West Chicago..... for 65 years, and while trains are cool to see once in a while, it got to the point where they were a major inconvenience. You had a less that 50% chance of getting to the other side of town unimpeded. I don't miss the trains since I moved out.
I grew up in West Chicago.... trains 24/7.... and I cannot seem to figure out why I am a Model Train Junkie. Good stuff.

Different shots than typical locations here at West Chicago while staying clear of the tower. I like the post Thumbs up.

They have something called cab cars usually electric I believe there's also a small motor in the cab car not just controls
I find it funny I caught the same lash up as 28:17 , only about a year later, on a different train, and with 3069 being in WC paint.
3069 in it’s original paint
Nice race at the end. Beginning sucked, too many metras. Once the freights started rolling, video was amazing.
Very professional

Nice capture. But some train why reverse run.
49 trains!! Busy place. Great videos.

The various vantage points made the video even more interesting. It was good to see a video without endless BNSF GE toasters :) LONG LIVE EMD!!!
