Cammino di San Benedetto: A (mostly) gentle stroll in rolling hills. Day 5: Poggio Bustone to Rieti.

The Cammino di San Benedetto (The way of St. Benedict) is a 300km hike in central Italy linking three of the most important places associated with Saint Benedict: it begins in Norcia where he was born; passes through Subiaco where he founded his first monastic house and the trail ends at the great abbey of Montecassino, where he wrote his rule, laying out the form that monasticism takes to this day.
It begins in Umbria, but soon crosses the border into Lazio, where it remains for the rest of the hike.
Day 5 of the Cammino di San Benedetto proved to be a day of two parts: an easy walk at the beginning and a less than enjoyable end to the day along busy roads and the school run.
The hike started at the village of Poggio Bustone with a steep descent and then alternating roads and tracks. After a couple of hours we passed through the village of Cantalice - built on a steep slope which had to be negotiated first! Then back onto roads and trails, passing the monastery of La Forests before taking busy roads into the beautiful town of Rieti. The town itself is rather beautiful and interesting, including being the geographical centre of Italy, but the walk into it is not fun at all.
All in all not a bad day of hiking in Italy, but not my favourite.

Nope! The hike is actually 300kms over 16 days, so plenty more to come. Am trying to get one video a week finished inbetween everything else...
