We recorded this last weekend and I edited it as fast as I could, so no info on interludes here (or the stuff coming tomorrow), but this was funny considering the interludes (so spoilers for that): "I sure hope Kelsier doesn't get to Kalak" yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah about that lmao. -Eric
@patrickboyle1135 I'm going through the chapters now as a sort of pre release release so delayed comment but this is exactly how i felt. Oh here's this friendly scadrian who was explicitly a spy.
Absolutely 0 chance Kaladin dies in this book. He’s picking up the King of Urithiru (fallen title), becoming Dalinar’s heir (Tower and Crown) and becoming a Soldier (repicking up the Spear). It’s the emotional catharsis to the chat in Way of Kings between Sigzil, Moash and Kaladin about whoever is in charge abuses their power AND the closing of the loop of the Dark Eyes/Light Eyes storyline since Kaladin has experienced life as a Dark Eyes, abused by a Light Eyes. As well as becoming a Light Eyes himself. Not to mention the Windrunner ideals following protection AND Leadership
yeah, but it feels like it'll happen in back half. At least the spear part. Only way that Kal becomes king this book is if Dalinar and Navani both die simultaneously but I don't really feel like Navani is in danger (in this book)
Kalak says that having two bonds was forbidden and that doing it could mess with their powers. I wonder if there is a similar thing going on with Nale. He has the Honorblade and the Highspren to match. He could also have some weird "compunded" abilities similar to Shallan.
It makes perfect sense to me that syl would be different now that Kal has sworn the 4th ideal. It gives her more substance, I feel like that’s always how it has worked, the further along you get the more real the Spren becomes. The more human, it came out of nowhere because they just swore the 4th ideal And why does Kaladin have to remember the exact word “librarian” doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what it is… maybe it just slipped his mind?..???
I don't think the joke in Book-Quartermaster was about Kaladin not _knowing_ what a library is - the way I read it, it more seems like he just forgot the word for a little while. Which, given everything he's been through over the previous few days, is fair.
Yeah, this is the joke. He even says “Oh, right. Yeah, that’s the word” afterwards. Just seems like a brain fart. I do feel that most of the chapter’s content was unnecessary but idk.
I think it was just a (slightly heavy-handed) way of pointing out that Kaladin has been fully involved in wars and fighting (and being a slave) for over 5 years at this point. He is so completely focused on the war that he interprets everything through that lens, even libraries. I'm hoping the rest of the book explores this enough to justify the scene
i mean he's probably never been to a library, given how expensive books were before the printing press, which just got invented and he was from a backwater town in a very anti-intellectual culture that almost certainly did not have a library. Even his father had probably never been in a library. So him not knowing the word or having heard it like once or twice is not out of the question
Kaladin enters Roshone's manor library in the beginning of Oathbringer chapter 7, so I agree that he knows what libraries are, but probably hasn't used the word much. Especially considering that reading is a feminine art so he wouldn't ever be seeking out a library himself
I avoided this episode when it came out because I wasn't reading the previews and didn't want spoilers. Having now read the book, its funny to come back to this and hear you all theorizing in all the wrong directions
I was very confused for a moment at why there's a Wind and Truth podcast at this point lol. This is a fun lineup of hosts! I Imagine it's the few Shardcast regulars that aren't betas already.
i assume ryshadium can carry obscene amounts probably for the same reason greatshells can carry their own physics-defying weight? figure the musicspren bond is capable of doing some of what the mandras do.
My assumption is that music Spren are using some type of lashing when they bond a rashadium to lighten them, so maybe that’s why he was so comfortable?
Horses can carry 30% of their body weight so it’s A LOT. Let’s not forget some horses carried knights in FULL PLATE. If the Ryshadium are supposed to be bigger than the average horse (800- 2000lbs in weight) they could seriously carry an immense amount and still be agile ! Plus a magical component, it’s gotta be a high amount.
I love the idea that Wind is the only nature spren that managed to escape being unmade. What an amazing idea! Edit: there are 9 unmade but roshars number is 10 so I buy it even more.
Shallan's *Be Drehy* moment caused me to say "What the fuck!?" out loud when reading it. Manipulation of one's Identity in such a way... it's like a microForgery but without the restrictions? I wonder if Shallan just has a particularly malleable Identity - perhaps due to the influence of an Unmade, as we know one influenced the whole Davar family.
Chapter 10 does confuse me because Brandon is often so economical with how many things one of his scenes accomplishes. I think of just how much ground, for example, the Sigzil PoV chapter in Oathbringer covers; we learn such an incredible amount of information in that chapter. Yet this scene not only feels vapid and out-of-character, but tells us so little, and what it does tell us feels nonsensical.
I think its a combination of Brandon needing to setup character moments for later in the book, and maybe being a bit tunnel-visioned on making a specific joke. imo the chapter could be justified if anti-Spren prejudice, Syladin/whatever relationship they'll have, Kaladin being unable to separate everyday things from war, and Syl's desire to be more human, are explored later in the book/series. There's also some stuff in there about Spren 'biology' and perception that could be relevant to whatever Ishar's doing
I kinda disagree that Syladin came out of nowhere or too rushed. It's important to note that I never perceived Syl as a child (Kaladin too) and only thought about their pairing after I finished reading RoW. In RoW there were a lot of nice moments between them (not necessarily romantic ones), their closeness, how Syl developed, her motivation in helping and understanding Kaladin, etc. I also think it's important that Kal had another unsuccessful romance, and Syl didn't try to set him up with someone else again this time (unlike Adolin). Also Ishar experiments, Syl wanted to be more human, wanted to be noticed by Kal... so many foreshadowing so far since RoW. On the one hand, I understand why people are so against them, on the other hand, I don’t understand why they can’t be given a chance. We only have 10 days until the potential end of the world. If Brandon decided to add a romantic line for Kal, Syl is the most logical and natural option. They both deserve happiness. Why they can't find what they need in each other? So far, I've liked the dynamics between them in this 13 chapter previews. I am happy to see silly Kaladin too lol Maybe chapter 10 seemed too much, but it's not the first time I've seen this kind of humor from the author. For me, this chapter gives grounds for Kaladin's therapist path and the fact that Syl has the same body and organ structure as a human woman. Very strong foreshadowings here. To sum it up, I think Brandon can do them well. Can't wait to read the whole book and see where it leads.
Well said! For me Syladin did not come out of nowhere. It’s been on my radar probably since WoR. I do understand that it seems to be really heavy handed right now though.
What’s wrong with Kal standing up for Syl? She’s basically just his best friend and someone was being rude to her. You’re not allowed to care about your best friend and defend them?
Putting my predictions here for reference in a few months: Kaladin says goodbye setting up his death. Kaladin is going to die however like Fleet, he will be taken up by the wind and become a cognitive shadow/herald, possibly replacing Jezrien in some new Oathpact. Everyone believes Kal is gone, however he is just “away” and will return by late in book 6.
I feel like I’m really late to this party, but it just finally clicked for me that the name Knights of Wind and Truth is probably a reference/rebranding of Bridge 4 seeing as their members are comprised exclusively of Windrunners and Truthwatchers in the form of Renarin and Rlain. I’m guessing something pretty big goes down with bridge 4 (I hate to say it, but probably something tragic) and this seems like it was written to memorialize them.
So much of Kaladin's story and life has been him escaping captivity or imprisonment. Ending his story with him CHOOSING to be bound in a Herald like manner is something in the realm of possibility.
Just a thought about the stonewards, we know that the ttrpg stonewalker adventure is supposed to give some context for this book, so maybe that 4th ideal stoneward features more there?
How much power would be needed to power up the one to three dawnshards on the planet? How much to reform Honor? Where yo they pull all of the pieces of Honor to reform him? The Heralds, Stormfather,Syl, etc.
I can see Kal not knowing what a library is. They didn't have it in his village, and while he was educated enough to read glyphs as a surgeon in training, he didn't know how to read text nor would it be an important part of his training to know where books are stored for loaning out. Knowing of a hospital or the like is a no-brainer for him but I don't see why the library bit is a stretch.
Btw, “fantodic” isn’t a word in the dictionary, but it’s linguistically fairly straightforward. “Fantod” is a word, which means a state of uneasiness. And the suffix “ic” means “having to do with.” Technically, you can tack that suffix onto any Latin root and get a new word, so that’s what that is. It’s an adjective that means, “having to do with a state of uneasiness.” Or, in this case, someone who makes me uneasy, at its most literal. Also appears to come from the same root as “fantasy”, which tracks. So “a fantastical person whose nature unsettles me” might be the most literal definition of the word in this context.
I didn't mind the library joke. I didn't see it as a class thing, more like his home town didn't have a library and he's been a soldier for his entire adult life, he'd just never seen one before.
@@17thShard sure, but I do find it a bit concerning that the editors wouldn't push back or that he wouldn't listen to them when it comes to quality of the book.
@@jasonbrewbaker3932 hi, let's not call fellow fans psychos, that's not cool. regardless of whether or not betas or editors said anything, Brandon's gonna Brandon, and people will also have different opinions.
@@aonene17 that’s your opinion. I’m entitled to my opinion and my thoughts. Me not rubber stamping an A approval on everything Brandon Sanderson writes does not make me some evil villain. If people were more honest with their feedback perhaps then he’d get better.
Ala at 1:08 ... so Shallan can manifest a physical Radiant with her powers. And Shallan-prime can wield the Patternblade, while Radiant wields the Testamentblade? Veronica: remember that Roshar has lower gravity, and who knows how gravity works in the Cognitive Realm?
The only think I think about a Kal relationship is that since leaving home he has had a very traumatic life, and understandably may not be interested /able to have a fully Romantic relationship. Now he is on the path to moving past it as he is only like what 21/22 I would say until he directly says his stance on relationships it is reasonable to think he may want one
@@oneukum One never truly knows, but historically interludes have been inserted between every section. The only reason to doubt interludes between every section in book five would be because there are so many sections (other books only have 5 sections).
There would always be a lag between whenever we recorded and afterwards. Unfortunately if we get all of Day Two, then we will 100% not have the interludes in that episode. In fact, we won't even have all of Day Two. That episode will have to come out prior to Wind and Truth to have any relevance, so that's at the latest Sunday before, and then we will need to record at latest the Sunday prior to that. That's to say nothing about actually scheduling (and near WaT time we also need to start recording for that ...) Ultimately Day One worked well because people were available and it fit the release cadence. I agree the interludes were great though! -Eric
Late remark: I just assumed the librarian is that herald from Carbranth, it'd make so much sense if Kaladin started his new therapy thing with one of the heralds. And she fit the description, right? Plus, it's logical for her to be rude to Syl/a spren.
To be fair, can Kaladin read? It’s clunky as fuck but Sandson is trying to show us that Kaladin can psychoanalyze people with the Library scene. It absolutely reads like a “R/thathappened” story where he epically owns someone and everybody claps but it is what it is. He’s a therapist now I guess, so Sanderson is clumsily giving us little moments where he helps troubled people work through their problems.
Hah, indeed, unfortunately since we recorded this last Sunday, no interludes in this episode. The way Shardcast goes there's a week lead time. But we will discuss those in a later day two episode. -Eric
Seems like the Syladin chapter is setting up for Ishar to steal Kaladin's bond to Syl, though what comes next for then I can't guess. I hope it isn't romance.
I dunno I didn't neither enjoyed or disliked the library scene. The critical parts is the setup of Syl trying to fit other roles in the story other than be Kal's mental support. It shows her making preparations for the mission, it shows her putting effort to achieve stuff humans can do super easy.... and yeah this end with Kaladin snapping at the librarian. Now on the critiquied part I simply assumed that Kal giving his background a male vorin didn't simply had super confidence with the word, like he know what a library pratically is but he didn't know the word because he didn't never needed e he is a sort of "home educated" and did a ton of practice on the job... But he never had a formal accademic training. For the librarian reaction, I saw her badly reacting to the change her profession/world is going through. She had to deal with a specific set of people until now... then some men started to read/write regardless of the "proper way" and now a spren also is trying to erode her place in the world (it doesn't matter there are tons of scholar spren, from her Syl is literally a tornado coming in her library with demands and the pretense of doing the scribe job)... People needs time to accomodate those stuff and syl is probably among the first spren in this era who is trying so hard to mesh with people.... years would be needed before Syl going around and demanding stuff from people not personally related to her will be normal.
Syladin is so weird to me right now because I thought I saw it coming in the earlier books but then I gave up rooting for it and now its just - randomly back
To be fair, Kaladin could simply forget what a library is called due to it being a feminine quality to be able to read in his culture. Just because he was groomed to be a surgeon doesn't mean he knows everything about what that would have entailed. Today, many children are raised to go to college, but feel pretty clueless once they actually get there
But... Kaladin knows what a library is. There is literally a scene in the last book where he's told that someone's in a library and doesn't have to pause and ask what that place is.
@rasarr1611 in rhythm of war? I don't remember that scene, was it prior to the fused invasion? If it's true, that does make this a huge error. It would have only been within the past couple weeks in roshar-time - not enough time for kaladin to reasonably forget
@@levimusgrave5683 Yes, I believe we bring it up during the episode; in the opening chapters of RoW, during the Hearthstone sequence where Kaladin is going through Roshone's manor
@rasarr1611 Cool, thanks for replying! I looked and found it: Oathbringer chapter 7 in Roshone's manor. Kaladin asks if there is a room they can talk in that isn't clogged full of people. One of Roshones soldiers says, "up the stairs, sir. Library is empty." To which Kaladin says "excellent!" Seems that kaladin knows what a library is, or if nothing else how to go upstairs lol
Is nobody gonna acknowledge that Kelek was the one who branded Kaladin as a slave? Isn't he supposed to be Restares the stormwarden who heats up the branding iron as Amaraam's men kill Kaladin's men. How are people so ok with Kelek, and for that matter, the other heralds (barring Taln)- these heralds aren't good people, why is it that Kelsier- Thaidakar is viewed as this villain overlord but the heralds aren't?
Where in the world are you getting the idea that that Stormwarden was Kelek/Restares? Kelek, as Restares, is the head of the Sons of Honor, Amaram's superior in the organization, he's not some random Stormwarden working for Amaram.
@patrickboyle1135 for starters he is called Restares by Amaraam in the scene and Restares by Gavilar in the prologue of W&T. Secondly and more subtly- the hand gestures/wringing which is consistent with the descriptions from Shallan's pov chapters in W&T- I guess it's possible it just two different people with the same name/ alias but it seems too big of a coincidence...
@@peteratanasov749 He refers to Restares, but he's not addressing or referring to someone in the room. The Stormwarden is unnamed in the scene. He's basically talking and justifying to himeself what he's doing, saying that Restares is right that this sort of action(doing things that improve his position) is for the best of all. Their descriptions also aren't remotely similar, with what little description of the Stormwarden there is.The most defining feature of the Stormwarden is a squared off beard, Kalak is never described with one, in RoW or the WaT previews. He also doesn't exhibit any of the timidity Kalak does every time he appears on screen. The Stormwarden is never described as wringing their hands, or cringing, or constantly looking around the room for threats. The closest thing to hand wringing he does is warming his hands at the brazier...because it's cold. They are just not the same character, and there's no implication the Stormwarden has the same name in the scene.
I completely disagree with y’all’s reading of the library scene. I don’t think it’s a joke at his station or his class at all. How often have you been talking and you forget a super common word? Happens all the… damn it…. TIME! Right, that’s the word. Also, he’s been AT WAR for like three years, even if he’s intellectually aware of what a library is, he doesn’t often think about them or use them. AND reading is a feminine thing, even if that’s going by the wayside. So men don’t often frequent libraries anyway. I think it’s a cheap joke, sure, but it’s not about his class or that he’s stupid. It’s just about his conditioning recently. Also, if Syladin is a thing, I’ll take this back, but I kinda hate that you guys are acting like it’s already happening and judging the book on that? Like, I will hate it if it happens, but it’s all just foreshadowing right now, and I can think of two or three other things that stuff could be setting up. If that’s what happens, I’ll come back and comment that I was wrong and I take it back, but I can’t judge a single scene in here until I’ve read the whole book to see how it all comes together. Like you said, they had to trim a lot to make this book work. They wouldn’t have left this scene if it wasn’t important in some way. Hamster? Maybe, but probably important.
I don’t think Syl and Kaladin will necessarily get together fully at the end of this novel, it could be something that starts or we see begin to at the end, and then develops over the gap.
Interesting to hear you talking like I did about Rhythm of War. Brandon "$46 million KickStarter" is now Too Big to Edit, and it's hurting the books, in my arrogant opinion.
I don't wanna yuck anyone's yum, but I hate Syladin so much that if it happens, it will probably bring my score for the book down a whole point. I always read their relationship as a brother and an adopted little sister that he needs to show the ways of the world (while still learning himself). So a romantic relationship runs so counter to my image of their relationship that it completely ruins it for me (and it was one of my favorites in the series). To people who never read it that way, I can see them being totally okay with Syladin, but I just can't make that flip in my mind. To me, Syl was a young girl who "grew up" alongside Kaladin, and so them having a romance feels incestuous and wrong. I really hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, I will be happy for the Syladin shippers.
Syl has consistently become more human every time Kal swears a new ideal. She gives specific reasons why she's embracing this. Kaladin does not seem to be romantically interested in her, and is just embarrassed by the idea of her floating around nude for a laugh when he's got something important to focus on. You are all reading way too much into this.

How much power would be needed to power up the one to three dawnshards on the planet? How much to reform Honor? Where yo they pull all of the pieces of Honor to reform him? The Heralds, Stormfather,Syl, etc.
1:10:10 Roshar only has 70% of earth's gravity. Maybe thats why Gallant can carry so much?
Honestly surprised that the library chapter got past the beta readings let alone the final edits.
Brandon writes the books he wants to write, for better or for worse. -Eric
@@17thShard sure, but I do find it a bit concerning that the editors wouldn't push back or that he wouldn't listen to them when it comes to quality of the book.
For real I said that on the reactor page and the psycho beta readers over there are acting all shocked at the negative reactions to 10.
The only think I think about a Kal relationship is that since leaving home he has had a very traumatic life, and understandably may not be interested /able to have a fully
Romantic relationship. Now he is on the path to moving past it as he is only like what 21/22 I would say until he directly says his stance on relationships it is reasonable to think he may want one
I mean… syl is WAY too old for Kaladin
And Wit is WAY too old for Jasnah 😁
Interlude hit pretty hard, may be best to wait until after the interlude on your next video.
How would they have known when an interlude was coming?
@@oneukum One never truly knows, but historically interludes have been inserted between every section. The only reason to doubt interludes between every section in book five would be because there are so many sections (other books only have 5 sections).
There would always be a lag between whenever we recorded and afterwards. Unfortunately if we get all of Day Two, then we will 100% not have the interludes in that episode. In fact, we won't even have all of Day Two. That episode will have to come out prior to Wind and Truth to have any relevance, so that's at the latest Sunday before, and then we will need to record at latest the Sunday prior to that. That's to say nothing about actually scheduling (and near WaT time we also need to start recording for that ...)
Ultimately Day One worked well because people were available and it fit the release cadence.
🧐
To be fair, can Kaladin read?
It’s clunky as fuck but Sandson is trying to show us that Kaladin can psychoanalyze people with the Library scene. It absolutely reads like a “R/thathappened” story where he epically owns someone and everybody claps but it is what it is. He’s a therapist now I guess, so Sanderson is clumsily giving us little moments where he helps troubled people work through their problems.
This chapters convinced me that Syl is def dying at the end, and Kaladin is becoming the next Bondsmith cause Dalinar won’t make it either
Who's that Cosmere Character 1: I thought for sure it was Ulaam at clue 4
I really like the libary scene... I don't understand issues worth it🤷🏿♂️
Hey, it's Eurocast! Has there been a Shardcast with 0 Americans before?
Interludes. Hfs, hfs!
Hang on a sec… are all three of you speaking your second language?!!
They are! -Eric
They amaze me! So eloquent in what is not their native language.
Library is empty." To which Kaladin says "excellent!"
Seems that kaladin knows what a library is, or if nothing else how to go upstairs lol
Also- he is described as a stormwarden from Kaladin's pov- that doesn't necessarily mean he is a stormwarden or even posing as one.
So none of you have ever had a moment where you forgot what something was called because it hasn't been on your mind in some time? Really? 🤪
Your analysis of the library scene seems super nit picky and kind of ridiculous to me
Interesting to hear you talking like I did about Rhythm of War. Brandon "$46 million KickStarter" is now Too Big to Edit, and it's hurting the books, in my arrogant opinion.
The Wind is Cultivation. Calling it now.
Didnt Hoid already confirm that the Wind is a spren that was created by Adonalsium long before his shattering?
@@martesegoosby9085 yes I take it back, Cultivation is Oprah
Glad it was not just me having issues with chapter 10. It really worries me for the rest of the book.
