This is a good video for people trying to learn the process, There's no reason any guitar player should be paying someone else to setup their guitar or solder their pickups.
Sure there is, it's called time.
I own about 15 guitars and have little to no knowledge about setting up my instruments. I recently spent $100 at a guitar center for a “platinum” setup and to check my pickup toggle switch. They called me and said they fixed the wire it just needed slight adjustment and that all was setup and ready for pickup. I didn’t have time to check the guitar at the store but when I got home the string action had fretbuzz all over and the toggle switch wasn’t touched and was still not working. Now I plan to do everything myself and learn it all.
No bullshit, I just opened up RUclips to look up basic luthier videos and this had just been posted. Bad to the bone, you guys. Thank you.

My resolotion to this year was: learn to play the guitar, something that i always wanted to, so this year i bought an used Epiphone Les Paul Custom - wich is already very expensive here in Brazil - and start to watch some videos and found your channel. I watched this today several times, took some good notes and FINALLY got my Les Paul to play the way I have been wanting it to for a long time! I had several people who claimed they knew how to setup a guitar do it for me but something was just not quite the way I like it. Thank you!!! No wonder your one of my favorite RUclips Channels!
LoL "chasing the needle"... yeh umm, I've been married to the methadone clinic for 2 years. Anyway, great video. I've started doing my own setups for the past year. All in all, its very simple and every guitarist should be able to do this. The intonation bit cleared up a few things for me.. which direction to move the saddles etc. Great vids my dude, good stuff and keep them coming!

Mostly I play bass guitar, and only recently got a decent electric guitar to expand my home arsenal.
Unfortunately, I already gave it to luthier, because I wanted to bring it into the maximum possible form for her.
However, this video will greatly help me in the future :)
My planned setup is Burny RLC-60 1980-1982 lawsuit era "Les paul custom", D-standard tuning, 10-52 / 11-54 DR DDT.

I've been doing setup by myself since ages, but that "follow the needle" trick when adjusting intonation is great! I wish I discovered it years ago :)

That reminds me of when I was younger unloading trucks for TJ Max and boss gave me a 5 minute spiel on how PASS somehow had something to do with using fire extinguisher. I still have no clue what he meant but promised if there was a fire I’d put it out haha
We had to learn that in trade school as part of our OSHA 10 or 30 and it just meant Pull (the pin) Aim Squeeze (the trigger) Sweep (aim for the base of a fire and sweep the flame).
I tried setting up my SG to C standard just the other day. The measurements that you suggested helped tremendously with finalizing the setup, and nailing the tone that I was looking for. Hail Satan.

Great instruction, Jason! My other 4 guitars and 1 bass just got here from my last place in Germany, so I’ve got a lot of work to do as I had to disassemble the necks of most of them. My father used to work for Martin in the 60’s and taught me a lot of this from an early age. Yet, I still learn new and easier methods with every instruction I watch. Nicely done!

Thanks a lot for this video. It comes right on point, I am currently trying to setup my guitar and basses myself.
Regarding my guitar, I use Ernie ball regular slinky, I remove the 010 and add a 060 ( 13-17-26-36-46-60). I tune my guitar (Ibanez rga with other pickups) in B standard.
My 2 basses (fender precision and musicman sterling) are both 5 strings basses, using 45 to 130 gauges.
Oh wow that’s cool! I think I may have to try that string combo!!!! The 62 bottom is a hair heavy for me
I use Dunlop Heavy Core Heaviest for C standard and dropped A# tuning. The last guitar I set up was my bandmates guitar as he didn't intonate the guitar at all....and I did this all without him knowing when I was early for practice ;)

On my "souped up" Epiphone Special-II LP, in Drop A, I've got DR 12 highbeams, but I'm going to try out the DDTs, and then the Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinkys after that, to see how they sit and how they feel.
I put the DR DDTs on a bass that I keep in BEAD tuning, and they have a good feel under the fingers, without being floppy and farty through the amp, they have a good clear tone and articulation, and I'm excited to see if the DDT guitar strings are actually significantly different from the regular HI-Beam 12s.

For strings I use two different pairs for my guitars, Ernie Ball Power Slinky (11/48) on a Telecaster in E standard and Not Even Slinky (12/56) on a Les Paul in C standard. ✌️

As for what I'm using, I'm currently playing a 7 string Kiesel w/ a 27" scale, and am tuning it to G standard. The strings on there atm feel a little light though. So I ordered a set of .76s. Might swap the B string out for an .80 depending on how it goes w/ the .76 on it.

Great video. Since you play heavy strings on your LP do always keep your tail piece so high and why and have you tried a wrap around before?

I just picked up my first Stratocaster, I’ve never done a setup on one before. I think my biggest challenge will be matching the tremolo spring tension to the string tension so that it stays in tune after using the tremolo. I’ll be using a set of 9’s and E standard tuning. Wish me luck!
This video inspired me to get my guitar set up for C standard so I can start playing more of the music ive been into lately! I am playing a Gibson SG, and I am having some trouble with the strings buzzing when I hit those big open power chords, i am using 12-56 strings. I brought the guitar back to the luthier for more adjustment, he raised the action the bit but he said the buzz is just a product of the floppy strings and there’s not much more he can do. Does your guitar buzz? How do you deal with it?

Hey man! Good video. I own a LP Studio, skinny top heavy bottom strings, keep it in C# standard. Is .008" between 1st and 16th fret a good relief for this tuning? I wouldnt say that business card fits between 1st and last fret. Truss rod's been my biggest problem with this setup...
I'm setting up my Jackson Warrior with 12-54 Dunlop strings in D Standard after upgrading the hardware with a full set from Skull Guitar Parts on Reverb. This was exactly what I was looking for after finding a bunch of videos that gloss over adjusting the bridge and pickup heights. Plus I wanna try being a guitar tech as a stepping stone to becoming a luthier.

Hey dude. Love your videos/channel/pedals when I inevitably buy one because your demos are so rad. I know that it's a matter of preference, but just out of curiosity, if you were going to tune your guitar lower, say to Drop G# (what I tune mine to, incidentally ;) would you set the action at a different height than you do in this video? and If so, can speculate as to what height you might set it at? I ask this because I am having difficulty finding a point at which the action is low enough to sound adequately crushing, but high enough where it's not noodle city U.S.A. Thoughts?

Also, what do you do to the nut if your 11's (and above) are too thick for that 9's slotted nut? My SG has 11's (with a wound G-String) and it doesn't stay in tune so I pencilled the slots and it helps a little bit. More wisdom on this is appreciated!
Great job Jason, really love the new production setup. 👍 If i had one tip, I would suggest raising your studio lights a little higher, and/or getting a soft box, because the lights are reflecting a little harsh in your glasses when you tilt your head in the intro. Keep it up 👍

Do you loosen the strings before adjust the neck bow?
Stringjoy 10-48, im building 2 guitars one a jackson soloist and a jackson kelly. Playing in std e and std d as always from South Carolina.
I'm going from 10's or 11's (I forget what I put on my LP) to 13-56 D'addarios I've filed my nut for the bass strings do I need a different bridge with wider saddles? Or would a standard Epi LP bridge suffice? If not can I get away with filing them with a rat tail to widen them slightly?
I'm working on my Ibanez gsr 205 that I replaced the nut on after it setting for like 4 years because of college. It seems to not quite has as much available neck relief as I want and it's bridge and tuners are rattle but have been sponges at the bridge springs and above the nut to fix that. I still need to adjust intonation and it's currently in b standard.
Sounds like a fun way to spend weekend. Totally understand what you mean, I had to put a lot of things down for school also.

Nice tutorial on doing a set up. Also, that's a nice 1990's Les Paul Studio. I have one just like it, and is has the same finish checking on the Headstock.

@@FuzzlordEffects Same here man. My first Gibson was Les Paul studio, bought it in 1993 at guitar store called American Music, in South Center, WA. I think she weighed in at 10 lbs but the tone was perfect. The necks are carved much better as well on these 1990's Les Paul's I think.
Super video! I have both a LP and SG and set them up a bit differently. LP .10-.50-ish strings and quite low action, but still enough to dig in a bit. The SG is .11-.56, and a bit higher action, and down tuned to a drop B. However I play teles quite a bit, maybe you could also do a video about those fantastic instruments as well? hey man great video! A question: how do you enlarge the hole of the tuner when you want to put a thicker string which doesnt fit through the existing hole?
Ooh that is a tricky one. Luckily I haven't had that issue yet but have come close. I think some brans of tuners have slightly larger holes.
A luthier may be able to enlarge that hole for you cheers!

I love setting up guitars, and I love to watch other people do it. I'm weird. Anyway I'm not really a doom player. The last guitar I setup was a Charvel strat copy. Great guitar. I Iet a friend borrow it for about a year and it needed some attention when I got it back. The next guitar will probably be my T-60, but I'm not sure if I want to get it refretted yet or not. That's something I won't do myself. For strings I just use regular Ernie Ball .10s.
Refretting and finishing are the two things I won't do. I don't have the tools or the knowledge for that but just thinking about having to remove the binding to refret a guitar is enough to make me not want to attempt it.
Charvel Strats are great! A T60 is a great choice for a next guitar! Refrets are a bit of work and Luthiers love doing that job!
@@FuzzlordEffects The T-60 was actually my first electric guitar. I've had it since like 1987. It's the easiest playing guitar I've ever played, but for some reason I just never fell in love with it. But it will do sounds my other guitars won't, so I've played it enough over the years to wear out the frets. There wasn't a lot of fret there to start with. It's weird like that.
@@MindFiles I'll do a crown and level, polish, etc. I just won't refret one. I especially wouldn't if the neck had binding. But you can do the rest! Get a cheap guitar to practice on and see how much you can improve it. Most of the time, those cheap guitars only need new pickups and some attention to the frets to get them playing pretty well.

Great video Jason I think this video will help people set up there guitars but one thing I think you forgot was the break angle of the strings over the bridge the strings should never hit the back of the tuneomatic bridge So people need to keep that I mind just my thoughts bro keep the content coming
I like to use the D’Addario EXL148 12-60 in my low tuning guitars. C standard on my BC Rich Mockingbird with a Quadmatic bridge (25.5”) and B standard on my Dean Razorback with a TOM bridge (24.75”), though I have one Ibanez GRG270B guitar tuned to D standard with these strings with an Edge tremolo (25.5”), which is still fully functional. 🙈
Your suggestion for the .013 set has sparked my interest for that D’Addario EXL158 set because of its wound G. I very much prefer the sound of that string as a wound string as well.
Normally I’d grab a random single wound .022 string and just shove it in the .012 set. 😂
On my E standard and drop D tuning guitars I like to install the cheapest .010 strings from Harley Benton I can find. 😂
Why? Just to make a point.
I’ve had these on my Dean Dixie Rebel with a Floyd Rose tremolo in E standard for a while now and they have endured my abuse very well AND they kept their tuning and didn’t break!
At €1,49 per set, you really can’t go wrong, right? 😉
Same story goes for my BC Rich Diamond Series Warlock with a licensed Floyd, the strings still work great! Even after many dives and squeals!
And the same applies for my BC Rich Kerry King V G2 with a Kahler tremolo, again... no issues, at all!
And all my other fixed bridge guitars in either E or drop D use these strings, too.
With the exception of two guitars that I’ve experimented with and restrung them with the .011-.052 set by Harley Benton, also for €1,49!
These are excellent for D standard, in my opinion.
As for action, I like my strings at “medium” height, so they don’t rattle against the frets as much when I dig in hard.
I use the ernie ball mammoth set for c standard on my ltd viper baritone and love them. Gave me monster tone.

Hey Jason! I'm currently running D'addario 12-60 for B and C standard on a LP style guitar, but I'm interested in trying the 13-62 with the wound 3rd that you talked about on the T60 video. I don't know why I never thought about using baritone strings before. I consider myself a bass player first, so having four wound strings just feels "right" under my fingers.
Try something like a .65 then. I find that using a heavier gauge really lets you dig in on the strings. Also, I like the improved sustain too.
You might really like them if you are used to bass! Another plus is they are pretty inexpensive. Heard of string joy? I have fun ordering custom sets sometimes.
I need to get my home built PRS like guitar on the bench to swap worn out Elixers for some new Ernie Ball's. Pick up height is so important I think to good tone, took me a long time to suss that one out though, we're spoilt now with the internet. Also, the name Otto Messmer just sprung to mind, I'm positive Jason knows why! Keep up the fantastic work. 👍👍
Isn’t pickup height a tricky one! I had to look the name up but cracking up about it now.

Check out Rick Beato's recent video on smaller string gauge sets. Its a good video and the reaction from the strings is almost backwards from what a person would expect. I havent had time to put into practice the info he stumbled upon. I will though. Im intrigued.
Bryan Keith I was thinking the same thing. After watching that video, I went back to 9s, but I play in standard tuning mostly.
Cool he made the video! It is a bit different of ballgame tuning this low, have to adjust for tension somehow. Can't tune this low and play 9s (at least most people can't)

Bryan Keith Jason’s is spot on. Going lower with 9s is a sloppy mess. Drop D was fine with 9s. Great conversation.

I agree on general, but if you were a famous guitarist doing world tours with several guitars you would want someone doing it for you. But I agree that every guitarist should be able to do it himself. It's about knowing his instrument.

It's a nut driver. I've been able to fit them in most guitars but sometimes there isn't enough clearance in that pocket to fit one.
This one barely fit, for these ones sometimes the Gibson tool is best. This was a cheap set of nut drivers I think from harbor freight
Les Pauls use a nut on the truss rod. Some guitars are slotted for a screwdriver and others use hex wrenches. I bought a cheap screwdriver set from Amazon that has screwdrivers with hex tips. It's pretty good. it cost less than $20 and has at least 500,000 different screwdrivers. I'm not working on cars or anything so it should last a long time.
@@FuzzlordEffects Sometimes the wall thickness of the driver will prevent you from getting it on right. I've been getting by with a set of old American made Craftsman nut drivers but I also use the wrench that you get when buying a Gibson.
