Killer vocal chain man. I can’t fault anything. Preamp, eq and comp are absolutely on point. I’m about to get into 500 series gear soon. I’ll definitely look into these units.
I’m new to the world of 500 modules and still trying to figure out where they sit in the signal chain, did you record this vocal raw (with a simple interface preamp) and send it back through this Neve loaded module post recording for refining? If so, wouldn’t the vocal be going through two preamps (the preamp for recording and the Neve module)?
Hey Doug, can I ask a question. You know how people talk about the eq on a neve channel strip(pre+eq in one) impart a sound even when the eq is disengaged, well do you think you get that same effect when lets say a neve preamp and eq are linked together(2 seperate units)? Sorry if thats a dumb question, its just something Ive always wondered.
No dumb questions here, the units separate in the case of the lunchbox, it is linked internally so you can impart the eq into the signal path. running it through the preamp, the neve 1073 has a line level input/ line amp , this allows super control over the actual gain of the signal, and it does change the eq, turn line level down, and really drive the eq, vice versa, it makes it super flexible, and the sound is beyond great, I would say buying separate wouldn't change this, what one would you be buying?, unless you get a clone that doesn't have a insert point, or a way of using it in this context. Using multiple modules, inserted in the correct way should yield very similar results.
Okay, cool, thanks for the reply. I guess I was just wondering more if a seperate pre and eq acts the same way as a strip when the eq is disengaged thats all, I dont know how sure I am that Im getting a Neve 1073 and Neve Eq. Im dropping some money soon on new Converters or Interface, a Neve Portico MBP, a Mastering EQ(between a Massive Passive, Curve Bender, and A Maselec MEA-2) , a 500 series preamp and maybe a 500 series eq but I dont think my budget will allow both at the moment, and a Patch Bay. In terms of the preamp I guess Im thinking a Neve 1073 or a Neve 511 Portico, an API 512v, or a Great River.
Yeah these are amazing, hands down. I think it was just a d-verb The convertor was a big help, it was either the apogee symphony or the Antelope pure 2, I have noticed convertors and clocks really help the verbs
+Doug Jenkins Thanks Doug, ultra fast reply. I enjoyed the renditions. Please let me know the source for the tracks if you are still in contact. Sounds like he's a family friend.
+siniswhatitis Love them, I actually Have the SOLO sub.. set right with a nice acoustic space, they have a image like no other.. I consider them a high end speaker, with the mirror presentation of the classic NS-10 , when I say this, I mean the flatness,, a ns-10 meets a auratone, and has a wider spectrum then both... every mix I have done has translated very well.
Thanks for posting this great video. They sound fantastic! Is there any sonic difference in using these modules in link mode as apposed to using audio cables to connect them? The Mic pre and EQ are in link mode? Just curious..Why didn't you link the compressor with the internal cable as well? ( didnt quite get what you were saying there). Thanks
I wanted to utilize stereo link in the api lunchbox that way they need to be directly by one another. As far as sound quality biggest difference i heard was the actual lunchbox go with the api
+Shanoy Bailey they are the most used tools in the trade eq can increase frequencies u want and decrease those you don't compressors control dynamics to allow a sound to be placed among other sounds correct in a perfect recording enviroment these would not be needed but yes i would say they are super necessities
Something I don't understand. So the singer recorded this vocal at his own place, on his own pre. Then you got the stems and fed this through the pre+eq+comp chain in post? So invariably the stems go through two pres prior to final mix down? Is this a common industry practice? It is almost like you're using the pre like an insert?
the right side of the neve pre is line in,, spun to left it's preamp,, no I am not re amping the sound, if you used a ssl neve, api, trident, or any other console, when you feed the convertor back out it hits the boards line in.. different then the preamp circuit.. that would cause some seriously bad distortion...
Good advice! My studio partner recently said goodbye to his friend who drank 4 of those a day for nearly a decade, awful cancer. Thanks for the Neve demo, sweet tones.
A Command 8! :D I'm almost like... nostalgic! lol I've actually been wondering lately how useful the old DigiDesign controllers still might be because it seems like those are going to just get cheaper and cheaper. What do you use yours for, sir? Oh, also, that guy's voice is AWESOME! (Especially through Neves ;) All that air =| ) I'd buy an album of that! Thanks for posting!
Fantastic rich, lush, smooth sound. Sounds like everything was well recorded and well played, great singer as well.
"I thank God that I have a chance to work with them"
Amen brother.

It sounds like a classic vinyl record immediately!
How do I get the album? Great sound.
Amazing sound 🔥
Sounds great! I have the pre, and compressor. It appears I need that eq.
That sounds like a record.
Love the vocals.
Nice and Beautiful . What kind of reverb ? I really liked
What reverb are you using? (Type and brand) It sounds amazing!!
Great explanation and review! Keep up the good work!
Thank You!

Wow, what SPRING is that? Great demo!
Eventide
Sounds Great like an Old Record from the 1950's. Neve has just got a Magical Sheen to it. Thanks for sounds.
That sounded damn good. These a little out my range but I’m getting Rupert Neve Designs 551.
That compressor has a PhD! Amazing stereo imaging
gorgeous sound
+The King yeah Neve is the real deal! so warm and imaged!
Wich is the name of the group that have recorded with that modules? I need a band urgently who recorded with 500 series!!!
can those monitors be so close to the wall????
how does this sound for tracking vocals? would you recommend this or RND 535?
either honestly both great

@adamwarren he recorded through an la610 and passed that passed and re recorded that set of stems through the neve eq and compression.

fantastic!
amazing - they sound ridiculous! What the verb your using man??
Yeah these are amazing, hands down. I think it was just a d-verb The convertor was a big help, it was either the apogee symphony or the Antelope pure 2, I have noticed convertors and clocks really help the verbs
Hello Doug, I just found your channel, some great info and reviews. Just curious, how were the music tracks for this artist produced?
These were played prior and mixed almost like a publishing instrumental license bank for leasing purpose he provided them.
+Doug Jenkins Thanks Doug, ultra fast reply. I enjoyed the renditions. Please let me know the source for the tracks if you are still in contact. Sounds like he's a family friend.
+Steve Bruckler yes he was i will let you know where he got them
To be honest I didn't even care about how the EQ sound. It's the songs for me...good old love songs with sweet charms
Whats happening Doug! How do you like the solo 6 Bes? I have a pair of dynaudio bm5as and I'm looking in to the solo 6 be's

The compressor has to be linked with cable too? I thought it was only pre and eq that does that or no?
@@DougJenkins are you saying api chassis sounds the best?
Who is playing steel ? Sounds great.
HI man,you tweak the threshold knob of the limiter, but it is not on?
sas sas it had a burnt light on it its been replaced
ok,cool
Sync probs in the beginning, but the audio demo is A OK!

+Raytheon Orion oh to answer your question its line in like you do on a Neve console line in
Nuemann Tlm 103 and La610 fed back into the line in to return to the channels to process with eq and compression.

Tony Bennett vs Andy Williams......❤️❤️❤️ really really nice. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wonderful demo.
Ha they do the thing. Nice.
Yo brother. Great videos. Friendly warning though... red bull will not give you wings. Stomach cancer maybe... but definitely not wings.
I don't drink anymore
Doug Jenkins Me neither. Long life brother!
Good advice! My studio partner recently said goodbye to his friend who drank 4 of those a day for nearly a decade, awful cancer. Thanks for the Neve demo, sweet tones.
