Mounting instruction wheel arch trim

I've done exactly the same on a BMW e46 but cant get the bracket to grip the wheel arch trim (fender) from inside as there's a plastic cover underneath the fender itself any idea guys what to do ?

Thats a fuckin terrible attachment method. So wee metal clips a different colour than your trims every 15cm, wtf?
