Nolan is the reason I fell in love with the art of filmmaking. He bridged the gap between big budget blockbusters and pure cinema. He’s my favorite filmmaker of all time and he deserves all the recognition for pioneering so much we enjoy at the movies.
I will never forget the moment in my midnight IMAX showing when the screen opened up on those sky scrapers and the entire audience gasping and grasping their seats as if they we're going to fall off. That was remarkable
I'm sorry... saying "pioneering so much we enjoy at the movies" feels unfair to me. Nolan has a ton of idols such as Michael Mann for example. What about Steven Spielberg? He's the one who pioneered the blockbuster in 1975 and has kept his blockbuster films human all the decades of his career. I do understand you love Nolan's filmmaking but calling him a pioneer like that disregards too much of cinema history before him.

It’s exciting to see Christopher Nolan returning to being unrestrained by a PG rating. To me it’s always felt as if he has the potential to live up to the reputations of the filmmakers you mentioned, but as he mentions in this interview, he’s having to find various ways to mould his movies to reach a younger or wider audience. This is something that many of the other filmmakers we consider greats (certainly the ones you mentioned) didn’t do, and in many cases actively worked against. For July, it’s Oppenheimer and it’s not even close. Nolan has earned my undivided interest and attention at this point. Also, I see where you guys are coming from but I like the new Mission significantly more I think. That 2:45:00 runtime went by in a blink and I was totally onboard. Great show as always!
I’ll be seeing Barbie this July. It looks funny, satirical, and irreverent…all things I love. And as a former physicist, I think I’ll need breaks to get through all the emotions that are going to come up during Oppenheimer.
Really great interview. I just wish it was longer and more in depth. I'm sure you guys had more questions you wanted to ask... especially Kevin. If I had to pick one movie. it's Oppenheimer for sure! I know it will be really powerful with it's visuals and storytelling. Sound design and score will be really powerful too. Can't wait to see it in IMAX 70mm in less than a week!
This was a smashingly good interview interview with Christopher Nolan! Your behind the scenes story was the cherry on top. Of course he responded by talking to you and enjoying talking about his work. When I was taught to interview, we called that point you identified where Mr. Nolan smiled and sat back the "critical shift." That is the point where the interviewee body language changes and she/he trusts you for a good conversation. Bravo guys! Best Nolan interview I have seen! (Pretty amazing transitions from question to question, also! )
Re: Kevin’s point on the back catalogue, I did this during COVID. Listened to every episode. This was before a ton of the major interviews, but that experience made it so that I never missed or will miss an episode moving forward. Highly recommend.
It’s a two edged sword.. with showing how much time they put into a single stunt.. it kind of gets people to appreciate just how much friggin time went into this movie.. I never would’ve guessed they actually built two enormous ramps.. one for Tom just to test his jump before he got to the mountain!
Oppenheimer is the only movie I want to see in July, cause I love that time period of history and I’m reading the audiobook it’s a great fascinating story
Really enjoyed the interview! I liked the question on theory vs actually doing something. I resonated with that as I’ve considered making some kind of movie but haven’t yet. Also, I’d have to go with Oppenheimer because whereas I’m excited about Barbie…I was not initially. As soon as I started hearing about the cast list for Oppenheimer, I was pumped and hadn’t seen a trailer.
Fantastic Nolan interview! Also have the same thoughts on Dead Reckoning, thought I was the only person who had it near the bottom of my MI rankings but sounds like y’all are in the same boat.

Great Nolan interview! I definitely have not seen him so relaxed before so that was great, as a casual outside observer sometimes I get worried that these savants are so deep into their craft that they sometimes forget to just enjoy themselves and appreciate how they make the audience feel. I have my tickets for the midnight opening of Oppenheimer next week and I cannot wait. As for MI7, I saw it last night for the 2nd time, sucks that it and Oppenheimer come out so closely because it means MI7 only has a week in IMAX screenings. I was disappointed by the movie, even though objectively it's really good. Fallout was incredible to me so I was expecting that + more, but this couldn't reach those heights. The villain(s) didn't do much for me, there weren't as many stunts as I was expecting, and idk it felt like it was missing something. I enjoyed it more the second time but to me this is an 8 while Fallout is a 9.5. Luckily I only watched the teaser and none of the main trailers because they ended up giving a lot away, it would've hampered my experience even more. I'm hoping they can bounce back with the 8th installment because if they do I think it might be the greatest action movie series we've ever had, this movie and MI2 notwithstanding
My father had a model of the Fat Man bomb that sat on his desk and when I was 6, I asked him what it was. He told me about Oppenheimer and he became a hero of mine. My younger brother (who now has the Fat Man model on his desk after my father's passing 6 years ago) and I are looking forward to seeing it together
Love all your content..thank you for that interview . Also love Nolan.. Watched Dead Reckoning I love the film. The story with AI did not disappoint specially with all the crazy things it can do now… they did release too much before the movie but personally did not take away from my enjoyment of the movie..
I really liked the Mission Impossible movie. Disappointed to see Sean's low score. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. It's running neck and neck with John Wick 4 right now as my favorite movie of 2023. I think both movies could have chopped off 15 to 30 minutes and been better for it IMO. Really looking forward to seeing Oppenheimer. That movie along with Dune Part 2 are my most anticipated movies of 2023.
Where are all the sets from Christopher Nolan's films? This would be the coolest attraction in the world! Imagine: riding on the Endurance spacecraft or the Interstellar planes, visiting Cooper's house, hanging in the Tesseract like the main character, driving the Batmobile and having a drink in its cave, walking through the spinning room in Inception, strolling through the town of Oppenheimer. Just imagine. Where is all of this?
Best part of the episode... The Whataburger take down. 😂😂😂 Bland burger is indeed bland. :) Whatchathink of In N Out burgers? 😊😊😊 Still not ready for the Nolan interview. Would love for you to interview more DPs, like Hoytema; the Last of Us DP interview is one of the best and more revealing of the film making process. If i can only see one movie in July, it would be Oppenheimer, because Nolan is a fave and i have to see it on IMAX as intended.
I completely agree that they showed too much on the making of Mission Impossible so much because of all the Covid drama where usually I would not know about these stunts. I think because too much news got out because of Covid it made the film less impressive in the theaters because the behind the scenes stories was more interesting than the film.
I flew to London two hours to watch man of steel because it was released one month earlier and IMAX what did not exist in Germany that time, in the meantime there are
You guys are like little kids in a candy store in front of Nolan... ;). Love Christopher Nolan...Oppenheimer was simply the best movie of the year thanks to Cillian, Nolan, Emma, and everybody else that was part of the movie !!👌💚
I would want to watch Barbie. Seems like it's goimg to be more 'unique' and it's going to be fun to see with an audience (I actually usually don't care for the shared experience).
Dead Reckoning is currently holding a 96% critic rating and a 95% audience rating. It is super interesting to hear how un-spectacular the general consensus of their reviews are. I can't think of a movie that held such a high rating across critics and audiences where everyone on the reelblend podcast wasn't overwhelmingly positive about it.
Yeah but that's the nature of RT scores. It's just not representative. The percentage is defined by the amount of reviews that give the movie at least a 5.5/10, which counts as a positive review. That's why the scores are so high and why RT is a very faulty metric to judge movies. Hardly any reviewer is gonna give this film 1 or 2 stars, because the sheer filmmaking skill involved that everyone can see. I guess the review from everyone on this podcast would also probably fall in the positive side on RT. It's just fucked up everyone clings to that score when it is almost meaningless, it only gives a very general indication whether a movie is at least a little bit watchable.
@@illuvattar I certainly don't rely on RT but it's very rare for a summer blockbuster to score high 90's across critics and audience. It sounds like most of the aspects of making a great film are present which lead to its largely universal positive reviews. I didn't listen to their spoiler section of the review but I imagine its the story that isn't up to par with previous instalments since the stunts never disappoint.
Kevin and jake calling Sean a few hours before oppenheimer screening " Hey, you think you gonna arrive for the test? It's gonna go off in 3 hours. Clock's ticking mate "
You guys definitely need to rewatch MI7. We’re all entitled to our opinions, but I truly think you guys missed the boat with MI7. I hope you rewatch it and do another video on it. … Worst comes to worst, pop a few edibles before hand.
I think Dead Reckoning really got affected by shooting during covid. You could tell that a lot of coverage was shot separately, and as a result, I never felt like the movie settled into a groove. Luther and Benji basically had no character moments and they were serving the same purpose in this movie. And all their scenes/dialogue was repeating the same beat of explaining the entity and feelings of doom. Plus they really went overboard on the Dutch angles. It almost felt like a surrealist M:I movie and the whole thing played like a dream to me. Also, Ilsa deserved better and her death was too predictable. And hopefully they explain more about the villain in part 2. I thought Pom Klementieff was outstanding. A fully embodied physical performance deserving of awards recognition. I agree with Gabe, if you’re going to market the big stunt, don’t make it the climax. Make it the cold open (Rogue Nation) so then we’re like, “Okay! What now???” Anyway, I still had a decently good time with it, just a bit disappointed considering I really think the premise was great and the opening scene on the sub did a great job setting everything up.
Dead Reckoning was an awesome time just from an entertainment standpoint, so I think you guys are a bit too harsh on it. Yeah, the story is not the most effective one, and a good point about that cliff jump. But seeing all this in Imax was breathtaking. The exposition is too much with stretched dialogues, and a bit of magic is off compared to other Mission Impossible movies. Still 8/10 for me.
100% agree on what Gabe and Jake said about Mission. Having all the making of features released before the movie ruined it for me. There were no surprises, unlike Fallout. Unfortunately, the only place showing Oppenheimer in 70mm Imax in Australia is a theatre in Melbourne, and I live in Brisbane lol. Do you guys think it's worth the flight?
Couldn’t agree more with the Mission Impossible review, I was honestly pretty bored, and when it ended I was actually relieved to leave, and I could care less about part 2. Felt like a Saturday morning cartoon.

Best part of the episode... The Whataburger take down. 😂😂😂 Bland burger is indeed bland. :) Whatchathink of In N Out burgers? 😊😊😊
Still not ready for the Nolan interview.
I flew to London two hours to watch man of steel because it was released one month earlier and IMAX what did not exist in Germany that time, in the meantime there are
Mission impossible was incredible
And Oppenheimer as well
Both are better than Barbie
David Keighley is a fucking rock star! You need to get him on the show and we need a heads up for all the nerdy questions.
In need an 2+ hour interview with Hoyte and Ludwig, and then i will have peace for eternety :.D
Kevin and jake calling Sean a few hours before oppenheimer screening " Hey, you think you gonna arrive for the test? It's gonna go off in 3 hours. Clock's ticking mate "
Also, Oppenheimer is the easy answer, though this is truly one of the best cinematic months in quite a long time.
Awesome job dudes
Oppy is R rated? It's only 14A in Canada.
great stuff

You guys definitely need to rewatch MI7.
We’re all entitled to our opinions, but I truly think you guys missed the boat with MI7. I hope you rewatch it and do another video on it.
…
Worst comes to worst, pop a few edibles before hand.
Excellent points
I'm going to copy that line..... As one of my mantra....... theory will only take you so far..
I always want to ask nolan why he still not use dolby atmos or dts x,
particularly on blu rays.
I'm flying to Melbourne for DUNE Part 2, so, I'll get back to you in November haha :D
Such a great question by the man to the left at the beginning of the Nolan interview.
Thanks so much. And thanks for watching!
@@seanoconnell2073 loved that you asked about Ludwig, too!
I'd watch Barbie, the Kenergy will be unmatched 🤩🩷

Great Interview guys, 4 days to go (I watch Oppenheimer on Thursday)!

Anyone got time stamp for Ridley Scott
So, what'd y'all think of the interview?
Great interview. You had a nice rapport. And you got a curse word out of him 😂
@@paulyd6372 As he points out, he was quoting Sir Ridley. Still, we'll take it
So dope u can tell Chris Nolan really likes you guys, maybe someday he will give us all the 1 hour interview!
@@darkweeknd33 That's the dream

Couldn’t agree more with the Mission Impossible review, I was honestly pretty bored, and when it ended I was actually relieved to leave, and I could care less about part 2. Felt like a Saturday morning cartoon.
