The laws of physics clearly don't work the same in the Mario universe. Their moon is also INSIDE their atmosphere. Don't even ask how that works.
Though, I would like to say that it is established that Mario can't breathe in space in Super Paper Mario. I suppose the "galaxies" in Super Mario Galaxy had some sort of atmosphere around them.

I remember watching this, like many others, when i was younger too haha. After many years this is the first time i noticed how both Mario and Luigi got a 1-up throughout this video though, which might be the link towards there being a part 2 and not going completely game-over from the fireball at the end. Not sure if this was done on purpose but a cool little detail nonetheless 👍
