  • Virginia Currents is on the move to Mama J’s in Historic Jackson Ward for the comfort of a home-like atmosphere and delicious southern soul food that leaves your belly full. Velma Johnson, also loving known as “Mama J" was a deputy sheriff for 17 years, but eventually traded in her badge for an apron. The restaurant opened in 2009 and has won numerous awards, been featured in national magazines, and was named a 2019 James Beard Award nominee.
