The music industry is 90% money so they have to make money in order to be/stay successful. And today, where music piracy is huge, a lot of musicians don't make that much money from music sales alone. A lot of bands make money from band merch. Going on tour is also a lot of work. You usually start planning a tour 6 months in advance. If you aren't signed to a record label, you are doing your own promotion. There are a ton of metal bands who work their buts off just to play the Ernie Ball Stage at Warped Tour.

Bands also have to work their butts off to write and release songs. I'm in a band, and we have been working on an EP for the past couple months. We are going into the studio on October 2nd and we only have 4 hours to record everything... drums, keyboards, guitar, bass, and vocals. Lots of bands dish out tons and tons of money everyday (sometimes almost $2,000) just to make sure that the people who liked their Facebook page can see their Facebook posts. They also have to pay for travel expenses, equipment (can be free... sometimes), bus and bus driver expenses, roadies (people who help move stuff), equipment techs (people who tune, care for and specialize in specific instruments, i.e. drum tech), light booth people, engineers (people who work the sound boards), merchandise (shirts, CDs, vinyl, etc.), and just about anything you think about. Everything comes out of their "paycheck." Plus the venue gets their share for the night, and the label gets 75% or something like that from album sales. Being a musician is very difficult. Taylor Swift happens to make a lot of money because she writes all of her songs thus she gets the rights to the lyrics, and melodies, and she shares the rights to the recordings (anyone else who plays on the recordings share those rights as well... and you can only copywrite those three things, lyrics, melody, and that specific recordings... can't copywrite drums, guitar, bass, chord progressions, etc.). So when a band does a cover of a Taylor Swift song and they record it and release it, they have to pay Taylor Swift to be allowed to be allowed to record the lyrics and melodies. If they just perform it (not recorded), then they are all set.
