  • This type of “hair” gained popularity in the late ’60s to early ’70s = bucktail jigs. Yup, they still catch fish - really they always have - but people seemed to forget about ’em with the rise of soft plastics. Now diehards are digging ’em back out and learning new ways to fish ’em.
    SO pumped for Minnesota's walleye fishing opener this weekend!! Where are you heading? And thank so much for watching!
    Here's that time Al Lindner kicked my butt:

    Hair jigs are wicked!! 3/8ths oz being one of my fav sizes in upstate NY hudson river. But of course that can change depending on water depth their in and current etc.. Love VMC hair jigs and Northland tackle deep vee jigs. Even eagle claw hair jigs work great and you can find them just about anywheres! Yellow hair being one of my fav colors. Suffix seige green mono is my favorite line! 14lb on a baitcasting rig or 10lb for spinning rigs. Zero memory line and great castability and the fish just don't see it! Walleye fishing is second to none once you get good at it! Never give up! Fish on!!

    Bucktail jigs are amazing! The walleyes love em'! Where i live in upstate NY the walleyes come onto to spawn middle to end of march. Can really get on them! I used paddle tail minnows and twister tails for years and always have my go to's keitechs, shadalicious, yum money minnows or whatever but the past few years the bite was finicky so i picked up some bucktails and they blew me away! People everywhere not getting a bite and i also threw everything but the kitchen sink but the second i tied on a yellow bucktail bam!! First cast and i didnt even put a twister tail or trailer on them. Just plain and crushed them! That something different is all it takes sometimes. I myself prefer 1/4oz to 3/8ths. 3/8ths when the waters higher and the current is stronger. 1/4oz for lower clearer water. Yellow is my go to but depends on water clearity of course. I also like red and white and so do the walleyes! Lol. Swim them or just short lifts but staying in contact with the bottom is crucial! When you feel that "tunk" do not hesitate set the hook cause they will spit it as quick as they bite it. No live bait here but do what works for you and your area! You def know your walleyes man! Its so much fun!! Been following al linder too for 20 years! Gotta love it! Fish on!!

    Not sure if it is me, BUT I was using plastics with my bucktails. Didn't get a single hit, switched to a straight jig and live leech, no buck tail .. 23 eyes in an hour and a half. Fishing the St.croix... Any info would be appreciated... :P Today im gonna try some gulp minnows with the bucktail..

      All depends on the mood of the fish and what they are wanting that day - or well, that hour! Have to constantly be changing-up what you're doing or having the second person in the boat trying something a little different. It's crazy how fast their moods can change where one minute the only way you can get a bite is a light hair jig...then something changes and they will all of a sudden crush a jerkbait being ripped by their face. And 23 'eyes in 1.5 hours is complete madness! 🔥 Awesome job dialing in what they wanted and leaning into 'em!!

      @@TargetWalleye Yeah it was crazy! on the river we can have two poles, so I also used a plain hook and sinker with a leach and was nailing them as well. Just letting it bottom bounce. It was inanse. May have lost a few as i doubled up.. And am in a speed boat so I can just reach down and grab them...
      Some old guys trolling had 30 fish in 3 hours. Maxed out their limit with some 3" rapalas. It was a good day, excited to head out again. Sadly I cant troll. Only drifitng or anchor at some holes for me. Hope to get a fishing boat next year!!
      appreciate the fast response and the value you bring. Keep it up dude! You are killing it.

    I could not agree more. I was actually watching walleyes jump their whole body out of the water today. They were eating mid water column in about 8ft of water.

    How are you rigging the fathead on the skirt jigs?

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  3 года назад

      If it's calm enough, I barely nip 'em thru both lips from the jaw up so that the minnow still wiggles on its own when the bait is hanging in the water column. Problem is you're going to cast off a lot of minnows or lose 'em if there's quite a few weeds up already. So then other times I'll just go in the mouth and right out the tough part of the scull so they stay on better...able to cast farther and work the bait in the weeds better without having to hit the minnow bucket as often. Doesn't always make a big difference if the minner is dead 'cuz the scent of it and the hair jigs action alone is more than enough most times to make 'em bite.

    What weight for the hot skirt? Also what would you do with a heavy bug hatch?

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  3 года назад +2

      Early spring I always use the lightest jig I can get away with and still be able to keep some bottom contact. Usually in spring I try to start with a 1/8-oz, but bump up to a 1/4 if it’s super windy or some light current. Far as bug hatches, there’s a few things you can do. Can try to go as subtle and natural as you can (slip-bobber and a leech, lindy rig or small spinner with a half a crawler, light 1/16-oz jig with a half a crawler, etc). Can also do the opposite and try to get a reaction bite out of them, which is what I prefer to do if possible. Can bump up to a 1/4- or 3/8-oz hair jig or jig and plastic and snap or rip jig them. Big 3-5’ pops off bottom then let the bait crash back down. Usually don’t even feel the bites as they pin them to bottom on the drop, but when you go to snap the bait again you basically set the hook right into the fish.

    advance mono... firm hook set, yet has enough give to prevent ripping lips. 8 lb is perfect.
    XL line = an elastic band. Poor hook set.
    Braid = no give, rips lips

    I would never want to fish in the boat with Al Lindner. Many people say he just parks in the bow and catches all the fish while the guy at the back nearly skunks.

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  5 месяцев назад +1

      I've fished in Al's boat with him several times, and each time he has even let me run the trolling motor if I wanted...and he still out-fished me from the back of the boat. He's simply on a whole 'nother level of good.

    Slow fall... use a baitcaster and thumb the spool gently or tighten the tension a bit. Much more control with a smaller baitcaster. IMHO. I've been fishing for well over 50 yrs and have tried everything.

    How many oz jig heads?

    • @TargetWalleye
      @TargetWalleye  Год назад +1

      That varies. I would say for me the most common size would be 1/4-oz. If I'm adding a minnow and it's early season + shallow water + no wind = I wind sometimes drop down to 1/8-oz. If it's windy and your line is getting some bow in it, I will bump up to 3/8-oz. In rivers you'll need to use the lightest jig you can get away with in the current and still fish within the strikezone...sometimes that's 3/8 and sometimes that's 1-oz if vertical jigging. Hope this helps and thank you for watching!
