My grandfather was a fisherman his whole life. Sold his last boat when he was 86. He always swore by these engines, saying it never let him down, they just kept working no matter what he threw at them
Myself, being from Denmark can tell that this is one of the most reliable engines ever created. When starting it with air pressure, you need a start-shot and then it just goes slowly and steady by the big wheel!
@@GamleJas2 And into the 70's. I passed through Esbjerg back in 1974 and the fishing port was full of wooden fishing boats and most powered by Hundested semi-diesels. It was a beautiful sound hearing so many boats coming and going with there single and twin cylinder engines.

sorry you lost me here, hot bulb exist in the head right? from what i know is that the diesel injector sprays on this part to ignite the fuel and start combustion. i thought that is why they were called semi diesels part of that being they could run on different fuels and they had low compression
Not like a glow plug engine at all really. Model aircraft engines are catalytic ignition (the glow plug element reacts with methanol vapour at certain temperatures and pressures and combustion is initiated. The fuel in a hot bulb engine does not burn when it is injected. It is heated and vapourized but there is insufficient air to support combustion until the rising piston supplies it. They are a strange beast.
En Hundested Motor startes rigtigt ved at "tørne" den. Derefter en startpatron og trykluft. Så går den rigtigt første gang. Det andet er vist bare leg.

As far as i know the fuel was sprayed on a hot glowing part in the head, allowing for low compression and all kinds of fuel. Therefore it burns when injected
OK this its the way to do i without compressed ait, but you ned some room in front of the engine, mark it starts reverse and is turned to run the right way by controlling the fuel injection
You should do more research or perhaps gather more experience? My Lanz D9506 and my Vierzon 402 both have this type of petrol starting system. It was quite common on many hot bulb engined tractors.
Pretty sure most semi-diesel engines are just the blanket term for engines that use hot surface ignitions. They exhibit diesel-like behavior, typically utilizing air blast or direct pumped fuel injection, but the compression isn't quite high enough for a true diesel operation- they instead let the charge linger briefly in the cylinder until it ignites off a dedicated tube or bulb. The closest thing out there today would be the glowplugs in modern diesels that aid in cold starting.
or model airplane engines which are hot bulb 2 strokes.this is a direct reversing engine.. which seems to be confusing some folks here. What is the compression ratio ? In modern diesels ( compression ignition) the glow plug only functions to start the motor.. in the hot bulb it stays hot and is the ignition source ( as opposed to compression heat, or spark). Is diesel or kerosene the fuel here ?
Capt Larry - but it doesn't actually need a continuous source of external heat, since after the speed is stabilized the internal surface of the hot bulb ends up retaining heat from previous combustion cycles to ignite the subsequent ones. BTW sometimes a small amount of water had to be injected in order to cool it a little and act like some sort of ignition timing retarder.
Yes, the hot bulb is situated in the head but there is no oxygen available to support combustion because it was used up on the previous power stroke. If it worked in the way that you think, all you would have to do is place the engine at just past TDC (with the hot bulb heated), then manually inject fuel, and the engine would start! I assure you it does not work! In fact what happens is that there is a small puff and you are lucky if the engine rotates a quarter revolution or so.
Most ran a boat. You could hook a drive shaft from the propeller directly to the flywheel and have foreword and reverse without a transmission. They probably had some sort of clutch though for starting and stoping.
A semidiesel is pretty much like a 'glow plug engine' - the ones many RC toys use. There is a 'bulb' that the fuel is injected into (at relatively low pressure). The fuel vaporises and ignites and burns. There is insufficient compression to heat the air and ignite the fuel (as in a real diesel). They can burn almost anything and do not require the high pressure injection that a real diesel needs, but the efficiency sucks very badly because the compression ratio is somewhere around 4:1 or so.
these things will drive a 1 metre propeller AND a twin drum trawl winch, with generator, water pumps and other stuff, VERY powefull engines, rev up to 600 RPM under full load, usually started with "taensikker", which are screw in large matches/fireworks
it start goed and runs nice we have brons engins industrie, hundested, armstrong, stork, samofa, lister, slavia, kromhout, tonycroft, duetz, petter, gardner, awa engins but we have a shit load of engins
My apologies, I checked my Lanz and Vierzon manuals and fuel introduction is even earlier than that. The fuel is introduced during the intake stroke, so even before bottom dead centre. Nevertheless, ignition does not take place when the fuel is "injected".
+Rafael Cantarella As far as i am aware, most semi-diesels can work both ways, alltought that is not how they are supposed to run it is a bit questionable how well for the engine that is
Well i think i know why you dont see a lot of this type engine around any more. Who in the hell would want to move this beast. To bad i bet most were just torn down and scraped what a shame i just love the sound it makes.
A common misconception. If the fuel did ignite at injection then hot bulb engines could run at much higher speeds. The fuel charge is heated in the hot bulb but until the rising piston supplies sufficient oxygen to support combustion, no useful combustion pressure is generated. If you check the injection timing of a hot bulb you will find that it occurs a little after bottom dead centre. Injection (at least in the diesel sense) is not the proper term really, it is very low pressure.
SuperRainbow Dash That is a direct reversing engine. It runs forward and backwards, no clutch or transmission. In a tugboat for example, when you want to go in reverse, you start the engine in reverse, then start it in forward to go again. There is a slight pause as the engine slows down, you change the timing on the valves so it runs in the opposite direction. Atlas and Superior are some other multi cylinder engines that work on the same principle. Running them is a blast. If you happen to enjoy that kind of thing.
@@b.atwater3904 But if the engine is turning in one direction, and the reciprocal weight of the flywheel is turning, then change direction, how does it not tear itself to pieces? Very cool engine, love this old machinery.
Dropina Bucket If you watch the video closely, you can see that the flywheel moves forward and reverse when turning very slowly.. , all the engineer, or operator has to do is reverse the valves at the moment its already moving in reverse and it will begin to fire and run in that direction. Watch for it, you will see. I ran a 6 cyl Superior in a 1942 minesweeper and had fun doing it.
Not correct!!! Nonsense answer... glowplug installed into the cylinderhead instead a large hotbulb to save warm up time With blow lamp. Vibrator coil and sparkplug, buzzcoil with other word was mostly used in older petrol engine, never in hot bulb oil engines.
"Semi-Diesel" was more a marketing term, there was nothing diesel about them, other than their massive construction. They were developed into diesels certainly though. I've never put a gauge on the line but I would guess the injection pressure to be no more than a few bar, not a diesel typical 120bar. I assure you that combustion does not take place at injection or even close to it. That could happen under certain conditions I suppose but that would likely lead to serious damage to the engine.
That's the most ridiculous engine I've seen in my life! If it was fitted to a car, you would never know whether you were coming or going! You might be stopped at traffic lights with the engine 'ticking over' then let your clutch out to go and find yourself driving backwards into everyone, causing a pile up!
