I can share your sentiments with mass production farms, but properly funded zoos are the best place for many of the animals they host. They're well taken care of, much better taken care of than they could do naturally for themselves in the wild, and many zoo animals are bred in captivity and are used to associating humans with food and comfort. They absolutely cannot survive on their own in the wild.
