Thank you so much for this. I had been searching everywhere for Tegu Brumation facts. I just got my little Red Tegu Roshi about 3 months ago and only had him for two months and we were getting used to one another and doing really well. Got him to stop nipping and just chill with me, but than he went to sleep one day didn't eat the next and for about a week and never came back out. Me being worried and never really hearing a whole lot about Tegu brumation didn't know he was just starting to brumate and freaked out. Tried to get him to wake up and everything else. I feel really bad now as I had woken him up about 3 times and tried to get him to eat. He would just sort of chill out and than go back to sleep after about an hour. I finally found like a tiny bit of info on the web about the fact they do brumate and it has nothing to do with temps and such so I've just left him alone, but didn't know if I needed to be trying to feed him or not as he did wake up once in about the last month and a half of him sleeping and ate 4 pinky mice and than went back to bed. Just thank you so much for this though. I'm definitely going to be saving this video in a playlist so next year if he does again I'll have this as a reference.
Great video. I think mine is starting to exhibit some of these signs and might be going down soon. This was a great refresher. Thank you! Good thing I got all the footage I need for my 'tegu socializing' video before she goes down!
Omg thank youuuuuuuuuu I was stressing out I’m a first time owner so this was helpful I get stressed without feeding my animal for so long so when you say a few weeks I get worried but this was very helpful
Yeah it is always worrying when a reptile is not eating. Especially since, as humans, we are so use to eating daily. Reptiles can go a long time without food though. Just remember that.
Thank you for this information. I’m still worried and doing a ton of research in brumation. My baby who is about 3 months old has been a lot more tired lately and has put his nose up to good when he is up. Not sure if it is brumation or not but I really hope it is.
Question, my sons tegu has been brumating for 3 months and when he checked on her she appears to be a lot bigger 😳, does tegus still grow while brumating
So my tegu will not come out from under my bed and parents don’t know if she’s brumating and they say there’s a stench how can I get her from under my bed .
Hey man. So I have a yearling female and it's August and she is starting to slow down a bit. She likes to sleep and I tend to wake her up in the mornings. But when it's feeding time she's still a beast! And she will still be awake for 4-6 hours basking and messing around in her enclosure. When she's ready to brumate should she refuse meals or if she continues to be like this in say September or October should I just stop feeding her?
If she's got a good appetite I would keep feeding. But if she doesn't want to come out of her hide or something to eat then I wouldn't. Worse case if she eats and them goes down: wake her up, put her in a warm bath to poop it out, then stop feeding. You can also sort of direct her brumation if you know what you're doing.
How about temperature? Is it important to put them in a cold room? I really want a tegu and I have the space, but I don't have a room that is not at human living temperature (around 20°C).
@@ProfessorHerp If they need specific low temperatures to brumate. For example if maybe they wouldn't go to sleep if the temperature is still above 15°C or something like that? I mean, if I keep the Tegu in my living room, I could turn off the heat source in the enclosure of course, but the ambient room temperature would still be not that cold.
I bought a red and white Argentine in February from a pet shop of course, I'm more of a ball python and other types of snake keeper but I saw this guy in a small enclosure and really wanted to take him home. After bringing him home and sitting him up he went into brumation in February and is still in brumation. I check on him weekly but he doesn't seem to want to wake up. Should I be concerned?
Brumation in February? Interesting. Is it summer for you? I would let the Tegu do what he wants as long as he is breathing and acting like a Tegu in brumation would. May consider a vet visit though to be safe.
I got a black and white tegu 3 days ago, I think he’s beginning to brumate, he burrows and I’ve had to go off and find him but I now know that’s harmful. My biggest mistake was feeding him last night. I haven’t seen him poop either, what should I do?
great vid, its really on my mind and would potientally like to breed in few years, altho would miss mine, double edge sword lol We need a egg update aswell, hope all is well :)
I have a tad bit of an issue. So my baby tegu is going into brumation for the first time... But he refuses to sleep in his hides, he has two but he will only go under his water dish, and when ever i change the water i wake him up.
What I would do, no clue if it would work, maybe get a base to set the water dish in so there’s still something there when you do water changes and that might help to not wake him up.
If it’s a baby probably, just take to a vet as soon as you catch it, the baby I bought yesterday is from a breeder that bred with wild caught Florida tegus and the wild caught adults he had were very tame and would let people hold them so it’s possible not sure how hard it would be with baby vs adult though
Ackie's are amazing reptiles! By far the most entertaining. My guess is that the Tegu population could potentially explode as a invasive species in Australia like they are in Florida. Probably why they are illegal.
@@dinogirl_ Australia is a great haven for life and includes so many different types of ecosystems. I can see why they restrict reptiles to only native species.
Professor Herp I mean look how quickly Caine toads invaded, we have the few idiots who will smuggle in stuff like corn snakes usually they're reported in pretty quickly but a small population of corn snakes is starting to appear in Sydney, fingers crossed the red bellies have them as a snack
My tegu is probably 7 months old.. she seems on the smaller size... she has been under for a few days, came up today and ate a couple bites.. should I bother her in a couple days to encourage her to poop? I did notice she is loosing weight, especially in her front legs.. this is my first tegu and this burmation is confusing.. so I want to make sure I am doing it right
i know im here alot but my tegu isnt necessarily brumating he sleeps alot but he gets up if i get in his tank to clean or give him water, he just kinda lays under his water dish but hes normally awake so id he just hiding all day or is he brumating?
Nope! Make sure they do not go down on a full tummy! Have him/her poop first. Do not offer food again until they have been awake for a week or two. Offer water all the time though
I am unsure. My beardie usually goes into a slow down mode but never full brumation. I would suspect that similar things, like daylight changing, affect beardies too. I am not as read up on beardie brumation though. I personally try to keep my beardie from brumating.
Bro theories have ALOT af evidence and are well studied in terms of science. A theory is very studied and understood for the most part from what I understand.
Anyone can have a theory. I can say "The reason my umbrella blew over last night is because it was windy" and that is a theory. Then you need to find evidence to prove or disprove that theory. Unfortunately nothing can be 100% proven so everything, no matter the evidence, remains a theory.
There is a difference between a theory and a substantiated scientific theory. And those scientific theories DO have evidence to back them up they just don’t have solid enough evidence to say 100% it’s proven.

My first thought when I saw the yawn was "thats gonna be the thumbnail" 😂 congrats on being monitized by the way.

We got our first tegu, who’s a sub adult, and she immediately went into brumation 🙃🥲
Awesome , you should do a video on bearded dragon brumation.
Will add it to my ideas list!
Thank you so much cause I just got mine and it’s in brumation and I was scared about feeding her thank you
Thanks man this rlly helped a lot

put in another water dish and do not touch that one. Boom!
Im gonna catch a wild baby tegu and build a 8x6 outside for him, do you think he'd tame down? (South FL)
Possible! Alex's Agamids has a tamed down WC female.

Ackie's are amazing reptiles! By far the most entertaining. My guess is that the Tegu population could potentially explode as a invasive species in Australia like they are in Florida. Probably why they are illegal.
Professor Herp 100% super humid environment, we can only own natives in Australia, part of me is thankful for that seeing the situation in Florida

he's probably slowing down and working towards brumation. Fraps in a similar boat currently

Is humidity needed while in brumation?
Its helpful if can be provided. Brumation sheds are rough.
Got my tegu last week, he is a baby. At what age do they start brumating? He’s been burying himself since I got him.
They can start brumating at around 1 year, sometimes a little earlier. It’s also not a 100% chance that they will brumate the first year.
mine went down within my first month owning him. Let him do him! If he stays down I recommend to leave him be
Professor Herp he’s only a couple months old though
Mine was a couple months old when I got him last year. He went down for a couple weeks as soon as I put him in his enclosure
Do tegus eat while brumation?

if its cold enough you could force brumation if you lower your house to 60-70 degrees and put them in tubs
