If this video helped you out, either by saving you time and frustration troubleshooting, or even better, if it saved you a service call, you can thank me by buying me a cup of coffee or a beer (in a roundabout sort of way) by clicking the Superthanks button under the video to make a small contribution. Thank you for your support.
hello. I found the super thanks button earlier but cannot find it now. Would like to send a thanks since this troy built mower wouldnt start right for the past 6 years and I just did the fix you showed and it worked!!
You still need to go to Church but as soon as I watched this Video my wife said let's go outside right now and try it. Boom is fixed and roaring to go. My wife told God thank you for putting this video in front of us. I was fixing to check and adjust the valves and also rebuild the carburetor. Thank you for making this video and you did it so well.
I am beyond grateful for this video. I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue on my Troy Bilt Mustang for YEARS. Of course it would eventually turn over once warm. And it would get worse when you clean the air filter... which now makes sense. And it could never start without draining the battery in cold weather, so I had to keep a jump starter nearby at all times. This machine has been to multiple mechanics who never did this simple adjustment. I just installed the 3rd battery in 8 years, and when it still wouldn't start, I found this video. I had to pull my cable a tad further back than you recommended, because the choke still wouldn't fully engage. I think my choke rod might be a tad loose/bent, but no big deal. Machine starts instantly! Thank you so much!
Update! Solved my problem! I have a Kohler Courage 17. Choke adjustment is done with a screw similar to the idle speed screw. Starts quickly now. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much, I watched your video checked mine, it was not closing all the way. I adjusted it and it fired up faster than it did when I bought it brand new. Thank you so much, I appreciate the video and appreciate you.
Thank you soo much, for posting this video. I've been fighting with my Cub Cadet Ultima, for 2yrs. With hard starting. Especially first time in the spring. Sometimes killing the battery, trying to start it. The throttle adjustment solved the problem. Can't believe it was that easy to fix.
100% Fixed my on-going issue. You sir have done your good deed for the day. Your new buddy, (me) declares that you can take the rest of the weekend off and skip going to church now.
I’ve been putting a cap full of fuel down the carby to start my cv16 for more than 10 years now , i just ran out to the shed and adjusted the choke and the darn thing fired into life first crank . Thank you 😃
Thank you so much. Dude you just save me a service call. Mine used to be so hard to start and it could easily take five or six different tries. I did my choke adjustment like you showed us and it probably turned over for 2 seconds and fired right up
Thank you!! My kubota zt740 would start hard, run rough etc.. after screwing with it for weeks and changing fuel lines, pump, filter, air filter, plugs etc.. this finally worked! I feel like an idiot but thank you sooo much!!
I just did this to fix my TroyBilt Mustang. It’s been tough to start for the last 4-5 years. It fired up the first time though just now after performing the fix. I did mow my lawn earlier today though, so hoping it starts just as well on a cold engine after a couple of days without use.
I had the same problem with a John Deere S180. Bought it from a Guy for $2000, normally a $3600 machine. I could only get the mower to start with Quick Start, til I adjusted the throttle cable. Easy fix, for a machine with only 13 hours on it. I sold the mower a week later for $3000.
A test to see if your adjustment is off is just manually pull up on that choke rod while cranking the engine. If it fires up faster then you know it's not getting enough throw via the throttle linkage.
OMG! I have been having this problem for about three years. This one mechanic said that he could fix it, but when he quoted me a price, I laughed and said, "No, I'll pass, but thank you." I've tried chemicals to clean the carburetor, I've tried all kind of things to get it to start without puring gas in the carburetor. But no luck. As a matter of fact, I kept gas in a water bottle to start it when it would cut off. I've even ordered a new carburetor, installed it and wam...the same thing,;it didn't start. I thought that I would have to live with it. But thanks to you and your so detailed and easy to fix explanation video, I tried it, done exactly what you said, and bam...on the first try, it cracked up. I was like, "What the f"*k...it worked." I was so happy. So from my heart, THANK YOU, SO VERY MUCH! God bless you, and again, thank, thank, thank you.
My Kohler kt735 after replacing carburator, it loses power in tall grass now and before it never did. Everything is sealed as per carb gaskets. It will start and run with no issues, even when engaging PTO it seems to lose power then it picks up after a few seconds.
Thanks. Would this also fix surging / rough idle when running and engaging blades. Mine doesn’t seem to hit the fast speed. The engine does slow up from the half way point to the low position.
I've had the issue of slowing down, or even stalling when engaging the blades. That happens when I've just started the engine and didn't let it warm up enough.
Troy Bilt Mustang 50: I would like to get a yard cart of some kind to pull behind this mower...but it just has the horizontal bar on the mower. How would I "hookup" a cart/trailer to it?
You could weld or bolt a metal plate protruding from the rear bumper with a hitch ball mounted on it. Although, I'm not sure Troy-Bilt would recommend hauling something with it as it does not have heavy-duty hydrostatic drives.
Closement,,I like that. BTW, I have one with LESS then 39 hours and it started doing this too. My DEALER said it's MY FAULT. ??????????????????? HTH is it MY fault? Thanks for the info. Heading back to the deal to tell him it's HIS FAULT. Thanks again.
I've found that lawn equipment dealers aren't exactly the best people to have to do business with (along with tractor dealers, automobile dealers, drug dealers probably, etc.) Fortunately, DIYers can find a good instructional RUclips video on just about anything they need to fix. Just need to be aware of the occasional hack vid.
For a wordsmith guy I’m shocked you created a word “closement.” Also, I’m surprised this made it past the censor since you said “for shit” in this one. Great video though, I’ll be checking my choke closement now.
Dang, I thought this would fix my mustang 50. Choke barely moves when fully open even after adjustment, carb cleaning etc, but lots of play when I open it manually. It's like it's missing a spring on the Governor? It will start then die immediately, doesn't need ether.
Troy Bilt Mustang 50: These 25HP motors use a fair amount of gas. How do you store 20-30 Gals to have on hand? I am looking for some kind of a 30gal steel drum with a hand pump I guess.
@@thecountrylivingproject3263 I see. Yea, we have about 4 acres and have to go to the gas station every 2-3 mowings so I am just interested to get a store of gas in the workshop to last a month or two.
What a huge miss. I'm embarrassed but glad this misery is over. This throttle cable adjustment fixed the hard starting issue I had with the Kohler equipped Kubota Z125 zero turn mower.
I assume you are talking about the blades not spinning when you engage the PTO. Check the drive belt. If it is an electric PTO, it won't engage if there isn't a load on the system and could indicate a broken blade drive belt.

Thanks for this video. As soon as I saw the video, I knew this was the fix I needed for my Cub Cadet. Solved the issue perfectly.
I had to replace the carb on my cub cadet. The choke was not closing all the way. This video helped me adjust it. Thank you so much.
Glad it helped
Just fixed the cold start on my Cub in ten minutes thanks to your video! You rock brother....
Excellent!

You saved me hours or days of tracking down this problem. I can't believe it was such an easy fix. Many many thanks!
Glad it helped!
I have a toro 4216 zero turn mower your procedure worked for me, i am so glad you posted this video fix tyvm!!!!
Great to hear!
Same here, thanks for the tip. I wasn’t pushing the throttle far enough to engage the choke. Freaked me out! Cutting grass again!
I think your video just shed light on the problem I have.
Thank you! You fixed my mower issue that I have battling with for a couple of years! This solved my issue instantly. Very grateful for your help!
You bet! Glad I could help.
Excellent video with very clear instructions- I got my mower up and running thanks to you.
Glad I could help. This comment made my day. Thx.

Great presentation. Seems to be the answer to my Kohler 22HP problem on my Troy Bilt zero turn

Well done video sir.
I have the exact mower as you and just found your channel. This is gold. Subscribing for any future mower videos you may make and thank you.

I usually use just a 5-gallon can. The tank hold about 2.5 gallons I think. I use less than a tankful to mow the approximate 2.6 acres of lawn.

Never did have a cover. Not sure if there was supposed to be one or not.
How does one take the battery out of a troy bilt zero turn mower
What a huge miss. I'm embarrassed but glad this misery is over. This throttle cable adjustment fixed the hard starting issue I had with the Kohler equipped Kubota Z125 zero turn mower.

How to increase rpm?
Mine just clicks could that mean the starter is bad?
Possibly. It could also be a low battery.
