The main thing about citv being gone is the fact that waiting for a certain time to watch something on tv built up the hype for new series and episodes of our favourite shows. Now it is “is it on streaming services?” Not that much of a hype tbh.
I really can't believe😒 that they have decided to close down CITV forever like this and moves all the shows to ITVX Kids as a streaming service, seriously what's the point of all this because there aren't going to be anymore cartoons/anime on freeview channels and this is a stupid decison.
Great video! I am a bit older so I remember CITV from the late 80s and the 1990s. 2 shows to shout out is Press Gang... its a drama based around teens making their own news paper. It's funny but also tackles issues that teens and kids dealt with, it had moral dilemmas, tackled difficult subjects but was also quite funny. Children's ward is another, again dealing with subjects related to kids, and some handy first aid info. Press gang was written by Stephen Moffat, and Children's ward by Russel T Davis - both went on to write Doctor who. I think it goes to show that back then it was a great place to get the writers and acting talent of the future.
I grew up watching CITV in the 90's. Hey Arnold, Garfield and Fun House being highlights. As I got a little older I started to prefer CBBC live-action content over the cartoons on CITV (stuff like Aquila, Demon Headmaster, Goosebumps). Then the Pokémon craze hit and I went back to CITV for the anime slots (Pokemon, Digimon and Cardcaptors)
Great video, honestly I always preferred CBBC cause they had more variety of shows, a lot of which were amazing and they had presenters that really gave the channel life. Katie, Cel, Yonko, Ian, Karim, Hacker, Dodge, you know the ones. CITV definitely had its fair share of bangers though. Finally someone else remembers My Phone Genie lmao. My Parents Are Aliens was my favourite, Sophie and Brian were played so well and were consistently the funniest characters. Two weird details, I remember I had a crush on Mel when I was a kid (and Elektra from Tracy Beaker Returns but that's a different story) and for some bizarre reason, because I knew the show was old, I thought Trent was played by David Tennant? Absolutely no clue how I could have thought that lmao. Honestly yeah it is a shame that linear kids TV is dying, I just think back to so many great memories with these channels and the fact that this new generation won't be able to have that is a shame, but I suppose they've already moved on from it with streaming services I guess. Still, at least we the OGs will always have the memories.
Horrid henry wasn’t owned by Itv. It was owned by Novel Entertainment. Citv got the aring rights. In 2019 nickelodeon got the rights and in 2022 Citv lost the rights. In early 2023 nickelodeon lost rhe rights to air the show to Netflix. Season 6 will premiere on Netflix UK
6:03 “I truly, deeply believe that if I was on this show, I would have won, based on absolutely nothing. I have little to no athletic skills.” - Me, but with Raven instead. 😂 I distinctly remember this one challenge at the end of every episode every warrior failed at when they didn’t make a jump in time or something and always thinking “Ah come on, I could do that.” 🤣
horrid henry will forever have a special place in my heart, i started to dislike the show from s3 onwards following in my POV that henry's mom sarah daniels started being verbally abusive to him and favouring peter as her favourite out of the 2 (fun fact: daniels is henry's last name due to some research on fandom and also i made up henry's mom's name following that the show never reveals her real name unlike they did with his dad in which he is called simon)
Before it was it's own Channel those few hour blocks was all kids tv was if you wasnt rich or lucky to have Sky/Cable TV so they could not re run the same shows over and over again most was aired once and that was it if they was US shows or UK orginal. Yet they never used CITV Channel to have more show variety or Re air the Old 80s and 90s Citv shows made for UK instead they just repeated the current shows at the time even more. They used to be 1 or 2 new UK animated shows airing each on Citv then they just gave up on that thanks to horrid Henry, Turning it into CITV version of Spongebob so a show that was aired 4+ tomes a day on a single channel. Then Nick Bought it so most of their Nick Toons channel was just those two shows only.
Funnily enough me and my dad were having a similar conversation on your last point (I grew up with Citv, and my Dad worked on some of their shows, including Art Attack and Ministry of Mayhem, he was a technical person so sadly not a decision maker, so we are equally invested in the fall of Citv haha) saying its so stupid of itv, and in the future, bbc to get rid of their kids programming cos 1. The advertising (only itv ofc), 2. The rights to sell abroad as a lot of children's shows in the past fromvthis country were shown abroad, Peppa Pig's about the only kids show exported now I should think and 3. As you said, channels don't catch an audience as kids they'll have no interest watching as adults. If there's nothing to watch on the tv because children's tv doesn't exist they'll just look at their or their parents phones most likely at short form, so they won't be used to or be bothered with watching tv as adults, a whole generation not watching tv means tv won't be profitable, stations will shut down and everyone in the industry will loose their jobs eventually.
Actually it turned into a Fast TV channel rather then a Live TV channel on Freevee, Pluto TV etc, Rather then on live TV. Cheaper probably as most younger audience are online.
I honestly don’t think the lack of diversity in programming or the repetitiveness of it was a factor in why it went downhill. Kids don’t care that much, and if anything, they tend to like rewatching their favourite 5 shows over and over, as well as not having the best gauge for quality at such a young age. I don’t doubt there are creative and executive decisions CITV made that could and should be criticised which contributed to their current state but the actual driving force behind their collapse was completely out of their control. iPad kids are just a different breed from us who are now early 20s and older, maybe a bit younger. They just don’t watch live TV like we used to, they’re used to having what they want whenever they want it, the concept of scheduled programming is just anathema to them. The primary way they watch shows is on RUclips or similar apps, they’ve got absolutely no incentive to sit through the programmes they’re not as fond of when they could just watch a dozen episodes of the show they actually really like. And it’s for that reason that both CITV and CBBC are going away. It’s also why Nickoledeon and Cartoon Network, despite having larger, American audiences, will suffer the same fate in the long run. That common factor of generational shift away from TV towards the Internet is global and honestly unstoppable. You can try and save live TV in the same way as you can save your local Blockbusters (or Xtravision in my case) in 2010. It simply isn’t going to happen. Is it good? No, there was something unique and special about live TV and the regular familiarity it brought to all of us who shared the same experience of our favourite presenters and shows even though we didn’t have a way to communicate that to each other, and it’s loss will be devastating on future generations of children. But does that change the fact it’s inevitable? Sadly not.
