It could be worth filing down the kick on the pen blade to make the nail nick on the main blade more accessible. I do that to most of my knives and have been happy with the results. Thanks for sharing
@@KnifeThoughts I have the same issue with a RR buckshot bone barlow..I'm going to use a Dremmel and grind the Pen to lower it and the drum sander on the scale to make room for the thumbnail.$33 in Australia..not worth sending back
I just got stockman it had some pits in the main blade . Since it carbon steel it will patina with use anyway.it is going to be a user knife for me anyway no big deal for 16 dollers .hope the edge retention is good since it a mild tool steel thats why i got it . I have some old slipjoints with 1095 and like them better than stainless ones made today.
They messed up on the nail nick all on one side like that. They may use those blades in other models and that's why. Idk. The kick can be filed lower on the pen blade enough to reveal the main blade nick but not so low you bury the pen blade nick. A kick is a bump near the pivot that the blade rests on when closed, and it is meant to be filed as the knife wears to keep the point in the handle when closed. If you want it as a user, a jewelry store, watch place or knife sharpener would probably do it for a few bucks. Those are beauties. I'd definitely want to carry it and use it.
You might consider grinding the Kick (I think it is called). The pin blade isn't too wide and could be lowered without hitting inside. That might be enough to let you get your nail in it.
Same issue here! Also way off center.. ordered first one from Amazon and the blades were touching the sides.. it wouldn’t close. Second one a little better but still way off center. First RR .. bad first impression. Even though its 14 bucks . Shouldn’t have issues like that!
I have one of these and I had fewer issues than you, fortunately. My main blade sits high enough that it is easy to reach. I have no gaps, the secondary blade is nicely centered, good overall snap and smooth action, no wobble. The only problem I have is the main blade is off center. I do not have any blade rap so I can live with it. These have a lot of potential. I agree with your comments on the RR on the bolster. I would like to see them to an RRR barlow.
Mine has the same issue but I can wedge my fingernail in enough to get a grip. It isn't easy to do & it should be easy. It really should have the nail nick on the other side. If you look at the knife from the side, the main blade nick is 99% blocked by the pen blade. Bad design. The Marbles Cattleman's knife has the same issue. Main blade nick blocked by pen blade. I could lower the kick on the pen blade, but then I would need to cut the covers back also. A lot of work that shouldn't be necessary in the first place. It is an inexpensive knife, but just a few changes at the factory would have kept this from happening. Just my 2 cents.
Funny, I have one of those with white bone handles and it doesn't have those issues. It's actually a nice knife but lately I'm trying to stick with American made.
I hear there may be a single (spear) version of this Barlow coming soon. This looks suspiciously like the denim micarta used on my RR Reserve 001 Easy Open Razor - quite a good knife , that one. Another thing, and one which seldom gets a mention, is the thickness of the secondary blade and spring. When, as here, it's the same thickness as the main blade and spring, I think it looks fat and clumsy. I like the way GEC uses thinner stock for its secondaries - just so much more classy and elegant.
I find your interest in RR knives interesting and refreshing. I've never seen a review on one anywhere else. They're not really my cup of tea but that's ok. They're still interesting. Good job. 👍
On all Barlows I have received from SMKW I have had to grind the pen blade down to gain access to the main blade.
What a ridiculous design flaw
could grind/file a slight half moon in the pen blade where the nail nick is for the main blade to gain access
I could, but I shouldn’t have to
I really wish they'd just make a single blade Barlows. That micarta looks beautiful though.
I very much agree
Half Hawk bro. Pinches open super easy. By far my favorite pattern.

I often have filed kicks but I don’t think I could get at the pen blade nail nick on this one if I did that.

picked up the Copperhead in this series...perfect.
Yes I agree with you regarding placement of blades, can't understand why main blade not in front.

How's the edge retention been?

Other models of rough rider barlows have this same problem. Very annoying and unnecessary.
I agree

How about lowering the kick on the pen blade?
Anyway great video, thanks!
I feel like it would make the pen blade sit low enough that it wouldn’t be accessible

Just a question of muscle memory - I opened mine easily after a couple of days
I can’t open the main blade. Except that I just did several times.
It’s difficult to get to. Thanks for your input.

I too hope a single blade will be made.

Single blade yes👍
Man, they should've put the nail nick on the other side! Would've easily solved that problem
It's A New Knife it Should Be Blemish Free. Have The Trapper Looking To Buy The Copper-head In The Denim Series. Nice Review.
Why not return them for a refund? It will always bother you.
