    Speaking of crocodiles, the biggest (non scripted) jump scare I ever had was in Far Cry 3, where I was just standing by a river minding my own business and a croc lunged out at me. Didn't see it coming at all. Later, I got attacked by another croc in a tight underwater passage without noticing it in time. I've been jittery near water in Far Cry ever since.

    • @daggers7765
      @daggers7765 Год назад +25

      There is a scripted crocodile attack in a secondary mission. I don't remember the name, but a villager tells you about people who go into a pool - in a cave underwater - and they never return, so you go investigate, you swim inside, find everyone dead, swim back and are attacked by a crocodile mid swim. Scared me so much the first time, and since then, I always throw a couple of grenades in the water after finding the corpses

    Otacon's elevator jumpscare in MGS1 legitimately traumatized me, I was a real scaredy-cat when I was a kid, and I was maybe 8-9 years old watching my older brother play, the buildup of tension, not to mention the overall creepy vibe the control towers give off, and the eventual realization that there are a handful of invisible bad dudes doing the sneak on the elevator you're riding on, but Otacon's codec portrait zooming RIGHT IN while he screams "WATCH OUT SNAKE!!" I still say to this day that the biggest jump scare I've had in a game is from Fable 2.
    You get to these hidden areas (it's been a while since I played so details are hazy) where you go thru a portal and end up in a valley with a lone mansion in front of you. You go in, get a chest, and everything's fine. I think there were 10 or 12 total in that game.
    Well at the 5th or 6th one, you walk up like normal but as you approach the walkway, the screen flashes, a scream happens, and the mansion now looks like it went up in flames days earlier.
    Gat dang, did this cause me to jump while sitting.

At one moment, I accidentaly got out of PRAWN (pressed the wrong button) and swimmed forward for a second. Almost immediately, I heard the roar of reaper . LOUD. which would mean it's very close. Doom 3 had an amazing jump scare. It actually had quite a few. However one scene has stuck with me. You see bloody footprints appear on the ground. Only time you see those. You can follow them and they lead you to the dead end of a corridor. Then you’d hear behind you, “They took my baby!” No matter how you try you can’t turn around fast enough. There was nothing there and the end of the corridor opens to some loot, but best (worst) jump scare in any game ever, IMHO.

Immediately puts you on edge, because iirc you're literally in a nuclear power plant, so why in the ever loving fuck is there a baby? But overly curious kinds naturally have to go look for it. It sounds like it's right behind a door, and when you open it, BAM. Mutated dwarf-like creature comes barreling towards you.
