Joseph Lateo being a guitarist is AUS is shit. Gear is hard to get and expensive as fuck. So sick of walking into a guitar store and seeing the same wall of fender strats and amp room full of Line 6’s.
Honestly, the legacy 1 is the best sounding one. It just has that signature Vai tone. You don't really hear the same warm and fuzzy tone in the legacy 3.
@@Jmilillo I've had both, the L3 is more amp. It's a L1 with a 3rd channel, and sound hugely warm and big. I enjoyed my L1, but kept the L3, it's just more amp.
Just bought one of these, no wonder Steve looks so damn smug, its an amazing amp, so much dynamic and tonal depth. I also use a BB Pre Amp on all 3 channels and a Rothwell Love Squeeze. Its like a combination of the Mesa Boogie Lonestar & Stiletto for melodic singing tones. And yes, I'm in a country band, but this amp proves country music doesn't have to be all twangy and horrible - warm and melodic does just fine. The presence controls are like no other.
IMO I like the Legacy 1's a little better. Much less going on under the hood, still gives that dark tone with a hint of beauty. For metal/hard rock you'll need to run an OD pedal though.
That is honestly the best tone I've ever heard from Vai. He's an otherworldly talent and probably the best known technical guitarist living today and I could spend hours listening to him, and have. But I've never really dug his tone all that much. With few exception his tone feels overly processed and brittle at times. Not in this video. I feel his tone in this video.
Steve we love you, your music, and your energy ...God bless you! The compressor and effects and EQ of the AXE FX has too much of an effect on an amp demo... Please "in the future" turn the FX off in some parts of the demo so we can hear the amp without all of the support from the AXEFX... we love ya!
The only real reason to get a Legacy amp is being a Vai fan and wanting his tone. His tone is 60% effects and stuff, so potential buyers would be like "this thing will not make me sound like Vai" and would be discouraged to buy it if he didn't use his usual effects on it. Its just Carvin's marketing attempt to lie to the consumer in a way...
Thats funny im a vai fan and that was far from the reason i got my legacy 1. I like steve vai as a player and enjoy his music but i in no way wanted to replicate his tone or thought "im gonna sound like steve!".
I wonder that too! It makes me think that this amp does not sound good on its own because if it did he would let you actually hear it. Why does he ALWAYS have the old Legacy on stage with him?
I tried one today, I thought it sounded really good. I liked how you can balance the channels then adjust to any volume as he said it does. I wish there was a bright switch or a pull switch to make the highs slightly brighter for the the 3rd channel. It shares the same eq as ch. 2. I was struggling to get highs that I liked. I should of brought my Universe with me to test it. In this video, it looks as though Steve Vai is using the head mostly as a preamp and the Fractal was giving him some stereo delay. I thought the amp was relatively quiet with out a noise gate. I was tempted to buy it. I like my current rig. He also, could of been using a gate and some eq with in the Fractal to refine the sound even more. I can tell most of the tone is from the preamp not the Fractal.
Ok steve:) I'm am an old sound man and built my first finder lookalike with one of Finder's guys when I was 15. Now at age 66 I hear this new L3 amp, and I have to say that L3 amp will be my Christmas 2017. I have built and repaired many amps and glad to hear this one has a TRANSFORMER! Thanks for the run thru on it. 73 old friend, nice amp. Jimmy, WX9DX
This amp uses Mercury Magnetics Transformers. Made in the USA. The best transformers money can buy. But Carvin really needs to promote that in their advertising, but they don't. Also loaded with Groove Tubes. And for those that don't know, all tubes are made in China, or Russia. There isn't one tube made in the USA anymore. You can Google the reasons why. He designed this amp with Ben Fargen of Fargen Amps. Who's been building boutique $2,000-$3,000 amps for 30 years. Trust me, this amp has it all. He could have any amp from Marshall, Blackstar, Mesa, Diesel, Friedman, Engl, etc. But he uses this. And for the money, it's probably the best amp for that price, bar none. But he needs an all black color option-just saying.
pretty sure it does not use MM xformers. Carvin doesn't contract with other American companies, and you can be sure if they did it would be all over the product listing, and also be priced much higher. Also he did not design this amp with Fargen, that was the legacy 2 actually.
I'm just going by what the Carvin Tech told me when I called. And he said it uses Mercury Transformers and Groove Tubes. I'm not sure why they don't promote it, but that is what he told me.
The tones are ALL really amazing. I wonder how much of an impact on the overall sound the preamp+effects section has compared to the power amp section. It would be interesting to add a preamp out and check the resulting sound with a high power PA solid state power amp that could be a very handy option for big concerts (some units output thousands of Watts ). I still think that the preamp section makes the sound. But i could be very wrong of course. Thank you very much for the excellent video. Kind regards, gino
Check out the Carvin Legacy Drive. It’s actually the preamp in a pedal form. I use the Helix version (which only has the high gain channel) and I got the best tone I’ve ever had. You can use the pedal into an amp, a P.A. or even direct for recording. It also has a cab simulator, though I’m not sure how good that is since it was made a few years ago. Carvin doesn’t make it anymore but you’ll find them used online. Or you can have a great version in Helix which is way cheaper again, only the high gain channel though. However, if you dial down the gain you’ll get a nice smooth overdrive.
@@michaelsnydermusic hi thank you very much indeed for your kind and very valuable advice As I said above I have a feeling that the tone of a sound is set mostly at preamp level I wonder if a wall of Marshall tube amps could be replaced by a basic pa amp driven by the right tube preamp I tend to think so A 2 rack unit pa amp can provide more than 500 W on 4 ohm speakers

Was Steve playing strictly through the Legacy 3 with no additional pedals or the Fractal that sits directly below it. Amazing sound and like the three buttons for different levels of gain
When I plug into this I only use channel one and two, channel 3 sound overly compressed and my picking technique is somehow masked now it sounds vaiish but it's not for me

When demoing an amp for the purposes of promotion and obviously to boost sales, why would you use an effects processor? I bought one of these amps and didn't notice effects were being used. Almost any amp is going to sound gorgeous if so? WTF! This is so misleading to me. Run it dry and let us determine if it can produce a likable tone or not? Just to be fair, I do like the tone of my Legacy 3 as it gives me some good bluesy tones as well as some very good rock and metal tones as well. So even though, you can I'm happy with it. Now all I have to figure out is how to connect my effects processor correctly. When I connected mine, I was unable to adjust any volume on the front of the amp but only from the effects processor.
The true secret to every guitarists tone is that special blend of effects he has 'always on'. Pretty much nobody runs 'just the amp' live or even on an album. Most people are running a delay 'verb and an overdrive at low levels that are always on to create a better blend.
It all starts with the amp though. I want to hear the amp, not the effects. I run this same amp and use no effects at all except the onboard reverb and it does sound good alone especially the clean channel.
Of course, you want a mid output pickup on a good wood through the guitar, so you get the best tone out of the guitar, running it into an amp that has a very nice base tone. The effects just make it your own, that's all I'm saying. Want to sound like Vai? Get this amp, buy his guitar, use his settings, and get the same effects. That's all I'm saying. The amp itself sounds pure and there's several videos on the 1 2 and 3 that are just the tone of the head into a Direct Input, which is about the closest you can get to its true tone without actually being in the room.
