What We Really Think Of The Victoria Memorial 🇮🇳

  • Before we leave Kolkata for good (and India) we are visiting a few more places. Well, at least the Victoria Memorial is an important one to see. The place has unfortunately a ridiculously high foreigner price that hopefully not many pay but it is a nice place with a nice building and gardens. I urge you at least to go to the gardens there, it is very nice indeed.

Most of these tourist places run on government subsidy. The amount paid by the locals will not even recover the maintenance costs. Govt. charges a reasonable amount as per international standards. Subsidy is for locals only. Even in Railways when you find fares are cheap thats because govt. pays for it. And when money goes to the government it is going to the needy too. as most of the needy actually enjoy those subsidies. Whenever do a price comparison just compare it your country you will be happily paying it. You already enjoy a very high foreign exchange rate

@@yvesthesleeve I am sorry if I hurt you by anyway I didn't meant it that way. I used the word "YOU" for people from the west as a whole. See India is a developing country there are large income variations of which middle class and poor are in majority. So govt. provides subsidy for museums, railway etc. so that local people can at least enjoy the heritage of its country. In a general mindset across south Asia people from the west are rich which actually true anyway according to most data. But the rates if you consider according to International Standards are pretty reasonable if you explore the contents inside. So don't use the term discrimination and all that. Govt. has every right to charge les s to its citizens.
But Good News you can take a virtual tour of the memorial here is the link:

Racist bullshit. Imagine charging Indians in Toronto five times as much to get into a museum. There would be public outrage but somehow these courtesies are sadly lacking in India.

The memorial is a beautiful structure but needs a lot of expensive maintenance. I would not get too upset that you have to pay extra, it's the accepted practice and every country has its frustrating customs. I paid $330 for a rapid PCR test in New York, to fly to Bangalore and $8 for a rapid PCR when i landed in India. Foreigners in the usa are equally frustrated. 500 is the foreigner fee for all national monuments and museums. (Taj Mahal is more at around 1100).
For the top 20 attractions it's probably fair but for those which are "just interesting" the fee is too high. Not much inside the Victoria Memorial from what I hear.
There's a balance but 500 is not it in a country where a meal is 50.
Thought I recognised Minto Park. My normal hotel in Kolkata is almost next door. It's very close to the home of Chandra Bose which is a museum with a low entry fee.

But after 10th standard, many indian students change their school....so for 11th and 12th standards...they prefer their home students more than students from other schools....so its normal for country or any particular place to be lenient towards its own people
Indians go through discrimination across the world....nobody talks about it...

But what is the big deal about Victoria Memorial. The almost tyrannical erstwhile queen should have nothing commemorating her unpleasant self.
But why it should continue to be there is - it was built on Indian real estate, with Indian resources, by Indian hands. Also this lung space is inevitable and imperative to off set all that air pollution and for this purpose, it is alright for this absurd memorial to exist.

Moonshine, some good-hearted suggestions to consider. You may not have realized it, but within this video, a new idea for a different video could be born. The topic: Charging much higher fees for most foreigners, while fees for Indian visitors is low. There are many pros and cons on each side, and people have offered some views. There is some research on this topic. Differential pricing is actually common in many sites, but people do not realize that they are being charged differently. Online shopping sites for example charge different rates for customers of different profiles.
There is also a problem with charging all Indians such low prices. There are hundreds of millions of Indians who are dirt poor and cannot afford visits to heritage sites. At the same time, there are those less than one percenter Indians who are ridicuously rich. They can afford to buy out entire businesses, pieces of land and even the politicians. Asking them to pay such low rates must be making them laugh behind the backs of everyday poor Indians.
The issues are that: these are leftover British-era colonial buildings. They are taking up huge spaces in prime urban areas that are being squeezed by millions of migrants and permanent dwellers. These buildings offer no direct economic advantages. Their upkeep costs millions of dollars, all subsidized by the government, or in other words, the funds come from the majority of the poor people. The question is: is it worth keeping these buildings?
There are many more interesting issues to discuss. Perhaps you and your family could offer your views separately in a different "rant video". That could be interesting to watch. It may be better to leave out the rants from the main videos as those take away from the enjoyment of watching the unfolding scenes. Keep videos focused and offer interesting insights based on research (easily found online).
You are offering unique videos to watch. Many rich foreigners visit India and let out fake outrages such as, "OMG, look, they charged me an extra 200 rupees for something". Then they go on to easily spend 8,000 on manicure and 12,000 plus per day on luxury rooms and dining. All justified as splurging on themselves. You and your family are not like them, you belong to the masses, and you bring us honest views and opinions. This is sorely needed in a saturated world filled with fake vloggers who are ripping off others, while blaming the masses. Keep going strong, and do consider adjusting the production styles as and when it is needed based on evolving tastes of viewers and of yourself.

  • @Privateuser9999
    @Privateuser9999 2 года назад

It’s an irony. You should blame the British for colonizing India
Luckily they stopped charging the fascist foreigner fee for those foreigners of Indian origin 😀
Prices are cheap and only half or less based on what you pay in western Europe for a museum $7 but they should charge Swiss prices to tourists so it should be 30 times the local price or have a Swiss pass type of scheme for unlimited museums at a fair European comparable price
But you can’t come to a low cost country and expect a subsidy? Do we get the Swiss pass free?
The Swiss local tram transport card is included in the hotel tax in Switzerland
They charge Indians a token fee to control crowds but Foreigners pay what it costs to maintain a similar facility in Europe or America
It’s still cheap at $7 but I agree charging kids less than 18 is wrong
Bhutan is correct in the $200 per day fee they don’t want back packer in their country.

Well, I don't have a foreign salary, maybe they should have checked each one's bank account, then also these rich Indians would have to pay. I simply can't afford this, me and my family are surviving, also we paid already 500 USD to be here. You v
can twist it as much as you want it is completely WRONG and leads to fascism. This happensd before in the 1940s...
