It’s called flooring companies. 98% of ALL used car dealerships use them. No car dealer is using cash, they act like ballers but they don’t use cash. They basically work for the flooring company. Anyone with a 650 credit score and a dealers license can get a line of flooring credit. This is the issue and always has been.

A lot of dealers do title flips where they will find a vehicle to purchase, floor it and use most of that money to pay off a vehicle in inventory that is nearing its payoff term. It’s a slippery slope and allows the issues for dealers to snowball until dealerships are left with no choice but to start scams. It’s a terrible cycle

Half the exotic cars and mansions sold in the last couple years were bought with stolen PPP money so yeah and before that from other criminal activities. These purchases tend to draw a certain crowd.

*COMPLAIN* : Well said Rob. We can all accept some service won't meet our expectations. But if you're not happy with something, complain. The measure of a business is how they deal with a complaint. By all of us staying quiet and not rocking the boat, bad service can escalate into taking us for advantage, and voila, something illegal where we lose out. In an ideal world, no business would need a complaints department. My attitude is that I make a complaint with a view to helping the business be better in the future. That's why I ask on the thankfully rare occasions I've had to complaint about some product/ service : "why did it happen ? And what changes are you making so that it doesn't happen in the future ?". It takes time to make a complaint. But if you have reasonable expectations, and feel that you are being given the run around, complain. If nothing is done, take to Yelp/ Google/ Facebook et al and make your complaint public. If there is a consumer/ regulatory body that oversees things, complain there too. Your money is better in your wallet than somebody else's, so don't get taken for a mug.

A dealer jerked me around for 2 weeks when I wanted to straight sell them my car. I eventually told them I was picking up my check or my car the following day. Suddenly the check was available!
I was renting my airplane to a flight school. They were not only behind in paying me but other aircraft owners that I knew. I pulled my aircraft from the lineup and told them to pay me before they could use it for rentals again. I actually got paid saw the writing on the wall and never rented to them again. Several months later they went belly up not paying a lot of people. I’m glad I went with my intuition and didn’t get greedy.

Lots of shady stuff even from legitimate dealerships to be fair. Saw a exotic official dealer selling a car based on repairs with obvious water damage, was a one off. Lots of Aston Dealers selling cars as CPO without any inspections being done and not including the CPO warranty in the price of the car though its shown as CPO Timeless certified. Never seen title issues though.
Another reason why not every buying situation is the perfect situation - sometimes it pays to buy new and really what you can afford to OWN not just what you can walk ‘out the door’ with. As they say , you gotta pay to play 🙃

My cousin had a situation where a Nissan dealership refused to give him a title. Till my cousin was on his third temporary tag. Where he told the dmv that the dealership was refusing to give him a title. The dealership was claiming that my cousin bought a car that was headed to auction. So after my cousin makes a complaint with the dmv. The dealership calls my cousin and gives him the title. At this point the dealership was trying to save face. During the whole fiasco, the dealership was trying to upsale my cousin. Into a brand new pathfinder while holding the title to his used pathfinder.
We went to that dealer once to look at one vehicle, but general feel of that dealership. That experience did not last long as we left since that place had off feel to it for us That was last year, but I am glad we did not do business with them

When a dealership goes out of trust with their bank, the bank comes in and takes all the cars. Ownership gets sorted out later on the banks terms and the law. Cars may not be stolen.
