My favourite carry knife is my Spyderco Tenacious, it's in my pocket 90% of the time. Its 8CR13 so not the best steel and I have to sharpen it often but I find it's really great at the things I use a knife for. It's a full flat grind so it performs like a kitchen knife, its pretty slicey so its great for cutting food, opening boxes and envelopes, has a nice tip so its good for opening plastic bags or packing. It's just a great all around knife in my opinion.

    Morning, Cap'n Matt -
I managed to establish the "Mirror Edge" polish on my EDC Delica.
Since, it's become dull as a butter knife from breaking down cardboard boxes for recycling, and I felt I'd need to put her back on my KO-3/TSPROF...but, saw my leather strop hanging nearby and decided to see what it could do for the VG-10 steel.
It brought that mirror edge back in no time, and I was amazed.
I'm still just learning my TSPROF, and I'd used the usual progression of the diamond abrasive stones. Then, I finished the process with the 3 micron diamond lapping film from Jende. Viola!
It's a really good feeling just seeing that pretty edge whenever I use my knife.
I've gotten quite alot from watching your tutorials. Your an excellent instructor, and I have actually considered joining up for some of your courses, but - have been going through some very rough waters for some time now. Perhaps in future?
Thank you, Matt - take good care & God bless...

We live on Squam Lake Rd/Bean Rd. at a place called "Cotton Farm", on the lake. Ours is the yellow farmhouse and barn right near the M"boro/Sandwich line. Will

    P.S.
Matt...you make mention that if you were to do that blade on your Edge Pro, you'd "Be there all night."
I get it - the blade needs re-profiling.
Since I only have my TSPROF and no 1" x 30" what about using it (TSPROF.) with the ever-popular "Atoma 140" abrasive stone? It is said that it's excellent for re-profiling, and every time I try to order one up they are out-of-stock.
Anyhow... I might at some point be able to swing a 1" x 30" from Harbor Freight, but I no longer have my shop - I'm just set up in my entry hall with my desk as my work bench, etc. ( I also repair/restore/conserve antique Connecticut clocks and American Civil War sabres, etc. )
My intentions are to only somehow generate some modest income from sharpening knives and scissors.
    Your thoughts, please?

Thank you for this video. Thumbed!
I tried to find it the day of airing, but even checking the channel, couldn’t turn up a link anywhere for the session (and I know had seen the ad post earlier but couldn’t re-locate that, either). Argh. Maybe I was early?

Anybody have suggestions for how to maintain the brushed finish?

Don't see how you can make money spending so much time with all these progressions though diff stones. My experience is that most homeowners abuse their edges so perfection is a waste.
I think the biggest problem with knife sharpening is getting folks off their butts and their knives in your hands . Everybody has dull knives at home and knows it but never get around to getting them sharpened.
I am not much of a believer in polished edges. I like a little tooth to the edge for most blades. It's something the steel can grab and restore sharpness. Once you put a polished edge on a blade and later use a sharpening steel, your polished edge is gone. Steels are the best for day in and day out maintenance.

      Hey Will,
I sense some negativity in there, but I'll just say that now that I have an established sharpening business getting people to bring me their knives is not a problem. I'm frequently shocked at how far people will travel to drop their knives off with me.
When people spend several hundred dollars on a knife they do enjoy the look and feel of a polished edge and are happy to pay the $15 to $30 to get it.
Everyone values their time differently, but I price my work to try to come out around $1 per minute, or $60 per hour which seems respectable to me for a craft like this. Video recording my work makes it take about 4 times as long.
And, generally, once you go above 1000 grit I say that you're entering polished territory and I suggest using a strop for maintaining a polished edge, rather than a steel or a hone.
I hope that helps and that you have an awesome day,
      Matt
