    never to many tools is certainly a good idea we have a pick up truck full with tools spare parts leaf blower oil ect sat at the side of the field through harvest. those x9 combines certainly have some capacity, hopefully john deere will bring out a smaller version of it as that style of combine is very good with dampoer crops which is why so many people liked john deere's older cts + the fact that they were indistructible. would there be anychance of a channel shout out at some point please. great video once again.thank you

    Oil seed rape and canola are actually different varieties. Rape is the older base plant, but at some point certain parts of the seed make up were seen as unhealthy and were bred out. The resultant selectively bred variety was called canola and grown mainly in the USA and Canada while normal rape continued to be grown in the UK.

    • @sbrooks5438
      @sbrooks5438 3 года назад

      Interesting to know. I believe the name Canola came from a combination of 'Canada' and 'Ola' denoting oil! Good to see some return to growing in the UK after the issues with CSFB!

    • @martingibbs1179
      @martingibbs1179 3 года назад

      @@sbrooks5438 I don't think those issues have gone away and that its still a problem. The insecticides they are allowed wont touch CSFB. I think they grow it on a gamble or a contract that pays enough that a risk of a lower yield is still viable. There's still a demand for rape seed oil, so producing something is better than nothing. I did notice that around me I've seen less rape, but surprisingly more maize (American corn) grown not just as pheasant cover or silage, but as a seed crop.

    I enjoy watching these videos whilst doing a spot of virtual farming on farming simulator hahaha!!!
    I've often wondered is there a reason other than preference for round and square bales?

    • @martingibbs1179
      @martingibbs1179 3 года назад +2

      Obviously small square balers came first and they now come in big and small. The small ones are human movable, which can be useful for some people and applications, you don't necessarily need a lot of straw in one go. The big square bales are bigger, compress the straw more and stack better, less wasted space from curves compared to round when stacking.
      Its harder to spread out the straw from a square bale by hand in my experience will that be an issue. Square bales also chop the straw up more in general so if you grab a handful its more likely to drop little bits where you don't want it. Round balers typically leave the straw more intact and compress the straw in a reel, like a paper roll. In my experience its quite easy to unravel a round bale by hand and pulling big chunks in your hand with less wasted little bits falling out of your handful.
      At the end of the day the choice is down to application of the bale. Does it need to be small and manageable. Do you want to keep the straw more intact? I've also heard the knotters on a square baler are more complex while the net wrap on a round bale is simpler and less prone to failing.
