      Did the Mogami's conversion to a heavy cruiser result in a significantly superior ship? Losing five barrels and requiring lugging around heavier shells must have hurt the fire rate quite a bit. Was the heavier caliber worth that against the opponents she faced?

  • @BrigadierBill
    @BrigadierBill 5 лет назад +22

    The Brooklyn is what happens when Britain tells the USA and Japan they can't have any more heavy cruisers, and Japan makes a 15-gun light cruiser in response (even if it was a structurally-unsound mess that was just ferrying around turrets for the Yamato's secondary battery).
    I just love that this ship was honestly better-protected than practically every heavy cruiser made in the 1920's, and even some of the 1930's heavy cruisers.

      People forget that you don't have to sink it to mission-kill it. Lots of important equipment on a battleship could not withstand 6" hits. Your question is a little hard to understand, but I'm assuming it's what did the Argentine crews think about serving on such a relatively old warship? I'm not Argentine so I only know what I've read, but the Argentine Navy had a lot of faith in the Belgrano. She had gone through several comprehensive refits, and it was expected that the combination of Sea Cat missiles installed during one of her refits, plus the 127mm and 40 mm guns would protect it from air attack. There was also the assumption that the Type 42 destroyers purchased from Britain in the late 1970's would be able to protect the battle fleet from British submarines. Unfortunately for Argentina. the Type 42's were protecting the carrier task force, and the ex-USN WWII era destroyers weren't up to the task of detecting the Conqueror.

      The controvery I am referring to is the so called teleporting that the USS Philledelphia incident that was the inspiration for the movie. According to some, the Philledelphia was carrying out secret cloaking experiments when it was seen in 2 different ship yards on the east coast on the same day without having put to sea. According to the conspiracy theory, there were sailors who had become a part of the ship with arms and legs sticking out of bulkheads and others simply vanishing into thin air.
      There have been several stories and YT videos about it.
