    We actually bought the furminator and slicker brush after viewing this and it made a great difference. Bandit tolerated the process better. His coat was great after one session. Can’t wait to see how consistent grooming will benefit his coat. Really learned a lot from this. It was very helpful. Thank you for sharing.

      Shivani Patel I have an Aussie and my dog moose is very loyal and sweet but it did take a lot of time and effort to make him have all his tricks and social so you have to take the time and watch her videos or go to doggie classes for other information or training

      Yes wonderful dogs but not for those who don't have time to spend training and exercising. They are very smart and loving but also much high energy. They have to exercise or be so hyper you will both go crazy.

    I've owned 3 Aussies that I raised from puppy to adulthood. While listening to your video on the worst points about Aussie, I felt like I was listening about another breed. I'm not saying you didn't experience those things with Aspen, I'm just saying I don't think think those traits are typical. My Aussies were all different in personality. My male dog was so layed back that he would start to slide off the couch while sleeping and wouldn't bother to catch himself. He'd hit the floor and continue skeeping without waking up.
    My female was so quick to train. She was potty trained by 12 weeks. I've never had a smarter more devoted dog in my life. Her attitude was, 'What can I do for you today?'
    None of my dogs were very vocal. They didn't even vocalize when they wanted out to potty. They just stood at the door till I noticed them. None of them chewed things up.
    I owned a wilderness supply business at the time, and took them to work with me every day. They saw multiple people every day and had no problems wih them. They loved the UPS man. They loved anybody that would talk to them. My male liked to lay on the mat by the front door, so customers had to step over him to get in. Nobody had a problem with that and neither did he. I never did get him entirely broke of that.
    About the only thing I agreed with was the life span and hair shedding, but I will clean up hair anytime to have that incredible Aussie personality.
    My doggies have passed on and I miss them so much.

    Aussies are amazing ! Mine would fall asleep during the comb out.. Loved the water and was so calm. Would actually jump in the tub on command. They are VERY smart and this one is so adorable. Ya cant help but fall in love with them. You can teach them a lot with a little time and patience. They love to have a job to to do ! Thanks for sharing

  • @harrygiovan6925

    She's so calm! Is that because she is used to it by now? Our 4 month old Aussie mix will barely sit still for us to groom her!

    • @animalscholar
      @animalscholar  8 лет назад +37

      +Harry Giovan Yes, she definitely wasn't this calm as a puppy. It took her a while before she calmed down during grooming. The table really helps during the puppy stage (as they can't move around as much).

    • @goaticorn8702
      @goaticorn8702 8 лет назад +16

      My Aussie was only calm for bathing as a puppy if I bribed her with treats/toys/etc.haha. But she chilled out around 8months or so with the bathing and now hops right into the tub. Just keep working with your flufferbutt with patience and setting her mindset to "calm" and "enjoyable" for bath time and it'll get there. xD

    Love the information on your Ausie knowledge. My Personal experience... I chose my Aussie based on the one and only Aussie I've ever known. She was a 'watcher' ... not a herder herder personality. Thinking all Aussies were quiet, I found a quality breeder and brought home a 10 week old female. They warned us it will take 4-5 years before we see a great dog. Baby puppy cuteness deafened the warnings. We also wanted the baby Aussie to bond with our Male Yorkie. What a mistake that was! The two dogs tolerate each other but the once confident Yorkie could probably benefit with some longer term talk therapy! The Aussie just turned 4 yrs this week and I noticed significant calming at 3 yrs 10 months. She still has the skiddish behaviour, constantly wanting to herd, hates small white dogs, great levels of energy, plays hard for attention, but lately she has become more physically affectionate, loves car rides, plays well with same size or larger dogs, wanting to be combed before bed. You're bang on when you say an Aussie is a tough love at age 2 but she is no longer a pet... shes a family member. I would certainly recommend this breed as a single home canine... not to partner up with another 'family pet'. They're so demanding... and equally so loving

    • @lmauser8490

      But dogs are pack animals. We've always had two Aussies. Some are more loving with each other, but they like having a pal.

    You’re very gentle with brushing but some people aren’t. It’s important to mention that it’s better to have a brush that doesn’t have sharp end, but rather those plastic balls at the end so it’s more pleasant for dogs. Some dogs don’t like brushing because they had a painful experience at some point. Also thank you for the video, it’s great! Xxx

    YT recommended this to me. Highly recommend you look into using an undercoat rake instead of a furminator. Furminators mostly cut the guard hairs and pull a little of the dead undercoat out on a dog with hair as long as an aussie. I have one and mostly use it on my short haired mutt girl, for my aussie I use it on the elbows (very short hair) only. An undercoat rake will change your life and get so much more hair out safely!

    • @animalscholar
      @animalscholar  6 лет назад

      I prefer the furminator to undercoat rakes, and find that it produces a very good result if used properly. Cutting guard hairs occurs when people really are not using it correctly (applying too much pressure, running it through too quickly, etc). Maybe if someone is not professionally trained, a rake would be best. I find that it takes way longer and many more passes than the furminator to remove the same amount of undercoat.

    I’ve been watching a few of these videos cause I have a mini Australian Shephard. I think her video is the best so far I’ve seen in the past year I’ve been looking at. I think she did a fantastic job and I think her voice is just fine and people that are leaving any negative comments they just don’t know what it is to own and Aussie. Just hope that they never get one. The poor Aussie won’t be taken care of right. I love you and I love your video. Keep going. Ignore all the negative comments you did a fantastic job. I watch this over and over again. Good luck to you dear. I have a mini tri. And I learned a lot from this video. I can’t believe you’re trying to help people and they have to leave. Sucnegative comments I think that’s terrible like to just wipe them right off the slate. And I don’t know who you are but I commend you I love your work. I cannot afford to go to a groomer I’m 74 years old live by myself on a fixed budget. Good 5:20 thank you because this video is going to help my dog. I often wondered why she would sometimes bite between her paw. Now I know how to take care of that. ❤ 4

    What is the length on your grooming table? I've been looking at purchasing one for my miniature aussie for when he gets bigger. He's 3 1/2 months now; and just wondered. It would make things easier on my back to have him at my height. Yours looked a good size.

    She is so beautiful and calm! I am getting a sweet mini Aussie in less than a month and your videos have been so helpful! Is Aspen a standard sized Aussie? About how big is she and how much does she weigh? I'm not sure what size things to buy for a mini.

    • @animalscholar
      @animalscholar  8 лет назад +11

      +jordanna Siglow Yes, she is standard size. She is about 24 Kg and stands 21 inches at the shoulders (so shes on the larger size for a female). Your mini should be quite a bit smaller than her.

      Minis are 20-35 pounds. If you don’t want it to shed and you want it to be small but not toy sized, you can get an Aussiedoodle. There are also toy sized Australian shepherd. Also, do your own research, I hoe this helped ☺️

    If things go well, I may be getting a mini in about 2 months, with a chance of it being a show dog. Of course, if it turns out to be a show dog, I'll be grooming it with some adjustments (I think for showing you only use scissors on them), but regardless, I find this helpful for so many tips! Eventually I would just be reverting to a regular, more pet style anyway (probably with a razor to speed things up) when I switch to primarily doing obedience/agility/rally, etc.
    What a pretty girl she is and I love her name!

    Your video’s are truly fantastic. Aspen’s coat is gorgeous. I’m curious how does one determine at a pups age how well their coat will turn out? The quality of Aspen’s coat seems to not be the standard at least from the Shepherd’s I’ve seen. Is this due to diligent and passionate grooming? She’s beautiful and majestic!

    I have 2 Aussies but mine have fluffy tails. Are some Aussies breeds born without tails? Aspen is a lucky girl!

    Love your videos. Aspen is super cute. Can you also give info on where to find the tools you are using? That would be helpful. Thanks

    Thank you! I am a dog groomer, I went to school, but I’ve only been on my own about two or three months. The Australian Shepherd is one. We did not do a lot in school so I question it a lot when I am out in the field.
    Am I not supposed to cut anything upfront at all or on the back?

    This may be a stupid question but I was just wondering. With the razor would it hurt her if you touched her skin? If the answer is no then could someone give me a link to that one. And if the answer is yes then is there one that wouldn't hurt if it touched the skin. I'd rather be safe then sorry!

    Idk if this is for every dog but my dogs ear curves so you can stick cleaning things down there as long as you don’t curve and she’ll be fine but idk if true for all breeds

    I hope that you get back to me. When you were sticking the trimmer in between her pads it was making me so nervous. Do you have lots of practice at it? Is there any guard on your trimmers? I cut myself with trimmers all the time 😅

    Hi! So first of all your dog is absolutely beautiful & so well trained! & second I am going to groom my dog myself for the first time because I took her to 2 groomers & her bootie ended up bald even though I showed them the picture of Aspen's behind after you were done shaving it. If you have any tips on how to hold my dog while I do it that would be great because she's a wiggeler! Thank you!!
