      But could they? So when you buy a BD/DVD/etc, it comes with a limited license to view the contents. Theoretically it might be possible to revoke that license making it illegal for you to play the disk. Of course it would be practically impossible to enforce this in any meaningful way, unless companies start putting "dial home DRM" on their physical media.

    As a fan of one of the most volatile forms of media in existence (anime) a physical copy is an absolute MUST. Licenses to various anime films and shows vanish all the time in the blink of an eye so a bluray or DVD is simply a requirement at this point.

    Physical media is the best. You never have to worry about the streaming service or wifi being down, you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription fee, you don’t have to worry about a movie getting taken down due to copyright issues, and aside from the previews you can fast forward there are no ads on dvds and bluray discs. (vhs tapes as well if you’re really old school) I love collecting DVDs.

    My favorite movie is Titanic (1997). I purchased the 3D version in 2012. This version came with a digital copy that I uploaded to Itunes. One day I noticed Titanic was missing from my Itunes digital library. I called customer service and they told me they no longer had the license for the film. So the digital copy I thought I "owned" was no longer available to me. That has made me hesitant about digital movies. The one downside to me about physical media is the clutter aspect. As physical copies do take up space.

    It definitely pays to have your own local copies, whether physical or digital, rather than relying on streaming. Some movies that were only released on streaming are now not available legally as the streaming platform decided to remove them and you can now only watch them by pirating them!

    You have to be careful not to "catastrophize" digital movie collecting. Take into account the long-running success of the Steam gaming platform. If you're a PC gamer, it's almost unthinkable to avoid Steam. Do I own the 200 games I've bought over the years? Yes and no, for exactly the same reasons you articulate regarding the ownership of movies. But does the digital format work? Absolutely. The one thing that would make digital movie collecting perfect would be if Amazon allowed movies to be downloaded to your computer without copy-protection - exactly what they now allow for digital music purchases. Maybe that will happen.

    • @GOMoviesGeek
      @GOMoviesGeek 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yup even when these platforms do allow download always concerned about DRM or some other system that might still potentially prevent viewing. I also now have digital backups of my favorite physical movies 😁

    I’m glad that I came across videos about four months ago saying that physical media is going to be pulled from all platforms. I panicked, and I bought more DVDs in the last four months than I’ve bought in the last five years. I bought about 40 DVDs. I haven’t bought that many DVDs since like 2018. Thankfully, I am a pack rat and I have been collecting DVDs for 22 years and I have never sold or traded or given away any of them. Now that there are not even DVDs available on Amazon the stupid unwashed masses are going to see their mistake in getting behind streaming. When your digital purchases start to disappear because of the musical chair, nature of the streaming landscape, they are going to realize that you truly do own nothing.

    I am mostly a music person.
    I habe 800 plus vinyl records and it definitely is nice that those will be there even if they get taken off streaming, or have been changed retroactively from the version I'm familiar with and in some cases have just never been on streaming (and maybe never will) in the first place.
    I use streaming too tho. Great tool for discovery and there are always stuff added to my physical collection every year that I first heard on streaming, especially now and more and more of my life is after I started using streaming.

    Well, if you can actually download digital media to your local hard drive, you also have more control over it. Assuming they don't have some kind of DRMA stuff that makes it unable to play the file. This is a good reason to have a home computer, and not just a smartphone, so you have storage capability.

    I have thousands of dvd's and blu-rays, and by far the best thing you can do is buy physical disks and then get into a routine of using a good quality 4k blu-ray ripper to make your own digital backups of each movie, then investing in a ton of storage space and putting everything into a plex media server. Even better if you can have all of your movies uploaded into the cloud in case of fire, robbery, etc. Yes we own the physical disks, but they won't last forever. Especially if you're constantly playing them. Best thing is rip the movie, then put it safely back into its case and store it.

    A bit of a correction - digital media operates on a LICENSE, which you called out correctly. However, that license is used to create ENTITLEMENTS, and not "rents". An entitlement is simply a very long number (for example, 256 bits), which grants you the ability to consume content for a limited time (say, 24h).
