Saw him in Norwich many years ago with my friend Peter Russell when I was still in the Royal Navy so that was before 1972. I think he had a bass player with him then.
I only hear about Michael Chapman 2 years ago. He's been around since the 60s but maybe he didn't get much play in the US? I don't know. But I'm glad I've found him now. In his songs I hear hints of John Prine, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and several others. Yet he is wonderfully his own self.
I hear a similarity, musically, to some of the introspective acoustic Bowie songs on Space Oddity. But the lyrics sound like something out of Chapman's own life. And no, I don't think he got much, if any airplay in the US. I found out about him doing searches on Mick Ronson, who added lead guitar parts to one of Chapman's early albums (1970 or '71, I think).
So sad to hear the news. Rest easy, Michael. You will be missed but not forgotten. One of the good guys.
another great musician leaves the stage. I raise my pipe To you Michael.
Ohhhh takes me back to my childhood in the 70s listening to this man and others in my uncles bedroom with him and his hippy pals. Talented man
Great songwriter, so sad to hear of his passing, really touching song
