Replayed this game today on my 3DS. The weird physics/controls came RIGHT back to me. It doesn't control like any other platformer I know, but it's ingrained in me from my childhood.
I had the exact same experience now with the release on Switch. I hadn't played the game since the OG Gameboy days. The controls are so stiff and unusual... but in the course of the first level, muscle memory fully kicked back in
Haven't watched the video yet (about to) but Wario Land is actually one of my favorite Game Boy games of all time. And my absolute favorite out of the Mario games on handheld.
Tatanga deserves a comeback. Honestly, instead of reusing Galaxy 1’s plot, Galaxy 2 should’ve had Tatanga as the villain. I mean, he’s an alien! It would’ve made sense!
Yeah, Galaxy would have been perfect for that purpose, but you've gotta remember that Nintendo is far more comfortable inventing 15 characters who all basically do the exact same thing rather than maintain any kind of expanded cast. These aren't stories to Nintendo, they're showcases. They don't care where characters come from or how they fit, they just want more
I've always loved this game for that uniqueness. The shooting levels were an especially nice touch, and i wouldn't mind seeing tatanga return as the main boss for a new mario. Bowser needs a rest.
My one critique of SUper Mario Land is that it’s too short. Should have 8 worlds instead of 4. It’s a weird game but I love it. Maybe I love it because it’s weird
"The use of color was critical to distinguish the characters and foreground elements from the backdrop. Obviously this wouldn't be possible on the Game Boy's monochrome screen" This ironically turned out to be a good thing for Samus's Varia Suit in Metroid 2.
Absolutely exceptional video, dude. The idea of exploring "the weird one" in a franchise is absolutely fantastic. As someone who always enjoys the inconsistent, weird member of the family, I can't wait for more of these. Mario Land was my favourite Mario game for a long time, for all the reasons you pointed out here. Absolute corker mate!
Played Super Mario Land on the og gameboy as a kid in 1989, and ended up beating the game. When that sweet tune of glory filled my ears, i felt like i saved the universe. Still brings a tear to my eye when i hear it, and its the only game boy game i own. 😊
What I like about this game and its sequel is how almost every level has their own visual theme with their own unique sprites-and even some enemies that only appear in one level. With most of the console Mario games, even the newer ones, there seem to be only four to six visual styles that are recycled across all of the levels, so they all pretty much look the same.
I had the gameboy in 1989 with Super Mario and for me it was a true Mario game and no one ( at least kids) thought that it was a Mario exact copy of the NES variant. For sure many years after we see how different it is but this because we have a « standard « for Mario games like you said.
That’s a great video , well done. Another point about the animations, is that on the original Gameboy screen there was so pixel latency you couldn’t see fast moving objects. Not that they were hard to identify but literally went invisible for a bit while moving fast. I shy the physics was made to be different, when jumping you sort of pop up very quickly to the apex then pop down again. If you see the rotating fire balls they actually rotate at a half frame rate to everything else, so that they would be visible. Maybe this is why they removed jumping on the shell, for it to move quickly would have made it invisible too.
OK, seriously, how does this channel only have 2200 subs? The production quality here is great, and it's a fun video. Loved all the old New Jack Swing you dug up!
It's true that Super Mario Land is a noticeable step backward from Super Mario Bros. 3, but as a kid I played all the way through SMB3 long before I even touched SML, and I loved the Game Boy game no less for it. I haven't watched the whole video yet, so I don't know if this happens here, but I see a lot of bashing of SML and it troubles me, especially since most of the time critics use Super Mario Land 2 as a bludgeon against it. I can like both games, but seeing SML2 used in that way has sort of put a dent in my love for Six Golden Coins in recent years.
Sorry I’m so late, but this was just fantastic! Loved it. As someone who edits, I know this must’ve been an absolute ton of work. This was one of my favourite games as a kid. Hearing the end music brought back memories of the joy of completing it.
I remember it being slightly straining on my eyes at first as a kid but ended up beating on about a week. My mom was so mad versus Zelda took me months.
You have such a great editing and narration style! I honestly forgot how different the release schedule of the early Mario games was between regions. Land makes a lot more sense as its own little thing for the Game Boy. I only played it a few times, but when I did, I had a lot of fun!
My main memory of this game as a kid is something like... 'oh heck, this is super fun I love this!' followed immediately by... 'oh wait, its over already?'
Mario Land was the first game I ever beat and other than donkey kong on Atari, it was the first Mario game I ever owned. 10:30 at night (which was very late for me on a school night) and disobeying my parents I think, I played Mario land in the dark I think with the game boy light/magnifier attachment. Dude that last level with the airplane. Honestly, it’s hard not to tear up a bit from nostalgia when I hear that song. I played that game SO much and it’s the one game I have the mot memories with. Thank you for making this video man. It was so nice to visit this superb game again. 🥰👏
At this point as I watch this video of yours I think it says you have 2.4,000 or 2.5 thousand subscribers and honestly this video feels like it's from one of those much bigger channels that has what kind of done this for a living and has been very successful. This was really well made and well edited and well narrated. And I love the mix of music you put in there from various games as well as Super Mario Land remixes. This was just a really awesome video all around
I'm interested to see where this channel goes. Video games are pretty saturated on RUclips, but these videos are very well paced and produced. EDIT: woah, you've been at this for almost 9 years, how has this channel not caught on more? Super Mario Land 1 and 2 are just behind Mario 3 for 8-Bit Mario games IMO. Despite the limited graphics, Mario Land 1 almost feels like an arcade game in how fast paced and varied it is, it says "we're here for a good time, not a long time" and doesn't drag on so long that you get tired of it. SML 2 is more of the same but with even more unique identity. I never played the Mario Land games very much growing up, but going back to them I'll take them over the original Mario Bros or SMB2 (J or US) any day.
I actually enjoyed replaying SML1 more than I expected when I was getting footage from the episode. It's nice having a game you can just blast through from start to finish on a domestic plane trip!
I remember my mum buying me this way back in about 1990. Loved it then, love it now. Even if it doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the series it's still a fun, often challenging, game.
4:17 the thing is, having grayscale colors is also an advantage, you can get away with shading and more details with just 3 colors, some of the scenery and ships in super mario land are shaded, and samus varia suit became detailed because of grayscale colors Also compare both the gb & gbc versions of wario land 2, and you will see one is monochronome but shaded and the other one has color but no shading

Sarasaland has not been seen since Super Marioland in 1989. But it has come close in Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart. Odyssey artwork did Show Sarasaland but it was not in the game. There once was a Mario Kart track called MOB DK (Daisy Kingdom) but it ended up as Pirhana Plant Pipeline which was a revived form of the DS Dokan Course. Pirhana Plant Pipeline will be seen in Mario Kart X to be released in 2025 on the Switch 2.

@@DarkPuIse the famicom sound chip has a strange quirk where the dmc channel affects the amplitude of the 3rd & 4th channels Not only the dmc affects it but the pulse channels as well
@@ssg-eggunner Oh, that. The answer is simple: Cutting costs. That likely wasn't Hip Tanaka's call, that was almost certainly the bean counters in corporate. Both pulse channels get their own output pin on the APU, and the triangle/noise/DAC get a second pin, which mixes them together (and causes the issue you mentioned). Obviously to give each chip its own output level, you'd need five pins - one for each Pulse, Triangle, Noise, and the DAC. That means what's a 40-pin chip normally would have to become either a 44 or 46-pin chip (the 44 pin-chip could probably get away with mixing the two Pulse waves), and of course, more pins = more money. It's the same reason Atari didn't go with the 6502 for their 2600, but instead the 6507 - it kept most of the functionality, but instead of needing to be a 40-pin chip, it could have all of its functions squeezed into 28 pins by removing pins that were used for functionality that it didn't need (stuff like IRQ or NMI, for example), and shaving off three address lines from the bus (reducing the maximum addressable space from 16-bit/64 KB down to 13-bit/8 KB in the process). That meant it cost a lot less money for Atari. Of course, this is also why later 2600 games had to do bankswitching. 8 KB seemed like plenty in 1975, and was more than fine as the 2600 was being designed, then released in 1977. Then the 1980s rang, and told them otherwise.
This is legit My favorite game boy game, I got my game boy I believe in 89 or 90, but I can't figure out which year. It was the best Christmas present ever.
I honestly really don't like the Superball Flower. While the Fire Flower can't really dispatch flying enemies when they're too high up; it otherwise has been such a reliable power-up. Superball's projected path tend to be jank in any other situation. The only Mario power-ups I hate even more are Troll Cloud from Mario Kart Wii and especially Spring Mushroom from Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2. I much prefer the sequel and especially the Wario Land titles in general. It helps there was a considerable improvement with the sprite work after the first Super Mario Land. I also so happen to quite like the Carrot from Super Mario Land 2. Also, as much flak I'll give New Super Mario Bros 2; the Gold Flower is legit more useful than Superball.
Id say that fire flower and superball flower are like oranges and apples But i could definitely agree that if you could aim foward (just like beta smb fire flower) and level design took advantage of superball flower, it'd be much better

Ah, thanks for the reminder! I had meant to put the link to that in the description - a last-minute oversight on my part. It's there now! I want to find the music you’ve used in this video which was very informative and well done! (Edit) I just found the soundtrack on Apple Music lol. It’s called: Super Mario Compact Disco
I like this game even though I never beat it I can't get past the 3rd world. I bought a bootleg handheld from China that has 6000 games on it which we all know are repeats. This game is on it and super Mario land 2 and I'm so thankful to find these 2 on there I don't hardly play any other game on there just these 2 and has brought me back when I use to play in high school with the game boy pocket. Never wanted the original Gameboy it just seemed too chunky. I just waited hoping they would come out with a better one and then the pocket came out begged my mom for it and got it for Christmas. I think I was a freshman I'm not really sure to be honest could have been jr.high 8th grade, but it doesn't matter, anyways I played the hell out of the games. I can now play them again with the bootleg console I have now.
This has nothing to do with Super Mario Land but I'm sick of people saying that Super Mario Bros 2 is a reskinned Doki Doki Panic. Its got the bones of Doki Doki but it's contents, the guts, are WAY different.
I don't understand why almost all videos about Super Mario Land say that it would be impossible to distinguish a 1up mushroom on the GameBoy screen. This is not true, they could make this mushroom look differently just fine.
@@ssg-eggunner yeah, that's one of the options. I sometimes feel like most RUclipsrs just watch other RUclipsrs and repeat after them. Brighter/darker mushroom, making one have different pattern, reverse colors, altering shape a little - there are many options. It's not like it's one pixel lol.
6 Golden Coins is definitely the more complete game, for sure! I also like that they keep some of the wackiness from the first Super Mario Land too, like Tatanga being the boss of the Space Zone.
Mario Land 2 suffers from trying to do too much - leading to slowdown. there never much going on in terms of sprites and enemies on screen and the difficulty comes from being zoomed in
@@sb6482 nah sml2 more so suffers due to not having a mapper that is fast enough Nowadays if sml2 was completely redone with a better mapper, someone would definitely be able to implement hammer bros and a wario land 2/3 esque camera system

I'm pretty open that my pronunciation of things is not always perfect, particularly with the influence of my natural accent. 🎥 Game Escape, 'A Rare Look Inside Nintendo (SNES Era)': ruclips.net/video/V52Fto40syM/видео.htmlsi=Svxu4OFnaAAlHfi2
I want to find the music you’ve used in this video which was very informative and well done!
(Edit)
I just found the soundtrack on Apple Music lol. It’s called:
Super Mario Compact Disco
Hope you enjoyed it! I became addicted to that album while I was editing the video
Iiked it but was kind of short. Loved that it had shoot em up stages
the theme tune was a banger too
This has nothing to do with Super Mario Land but I'm sick of people saying that Super Mario Bros 2 is a reskinned Doki Doki Panic. Its got the bones of Doki Doki but it's contents, the guts, are WAY different.
SMB3 in '88 seems crazy to me
1st one was awful compared to 2 which was so polished
Did you know? You can change the color when playing on the Game Boy Color?
Nostalgic AF!
Ah yes Seega
I would love #Nintendo to revisit Sarasaland with Princess Daisy in a new game in the future!
I loved beating this game whilst taking a dump 😅
I don't understand why almost all videos about Super Mario Land say that it would be impossible to distinguish a 1up mushroom on the GameBoy screen. This is not true, they could make this mushroom look differently just fine.
Theorically speaking you could simply use a brighter gray for the mushroom
@@ssg-eggunner yeah, that's one of the options. I sometimes feel like most RUclipsrs just watch other RUclipsrs and repeat after them. Brighter/darker mushroom, making one have different pattern, reverse colors, altering shape a little - there are many options. It's not like it's one pixel lol.
Most of the music is too distracting for me to focus on the dialogue. Otherwise sweeeeeet.
my favorite mario game 🙏
I LOVE THIS GAME!
SMW was the best. Just magic.
Clearly smb3 better
It was great
What no super mario bros 2 the USA one?
Was never a fan of this one, its sequel however is in my top 5.
6 Golden Coins is definitely the more complete game, for sure! I also like that they keep some of the wackiness from the first Super Mario Land too, like Tatanga being the boss of the Space Zone.
Mario Land 2 suffers from trying to do too much - leading to slowdown. there never much going on in terms of sprites and enemies on screen and the difficulty comes from being zoomed in
Heck yeah! I loved SML 2!
@@sb6482 nah sml2 more so suffers due to not having a mapper that is fast enough
Nowadays if sml2 was completely redone with a better mapper, someone would definitely be able to implement hammer bros and a wario land 2/3 esque camera system
Why am I yet to find a SINGLE ENGLISH NATIVE SPEAKER who is able of pronouncing Gunpei Yokoi's name correctly?! I mean, this is uncanny.
It's GUNPEI.
If you want a bit of a phonetic guide: GOON - PAY.
Not GANPEI, not GUNPAI. FFs. Put words through Google Translate's voice output bit so that it will pronounce them for you in the correct accent.
I'm pretty open that my pronunciation of things is not always perfect, particularly with the influence of my natural accent. However, in this case, I listened to about 10 different videos that all pronounced it close to, if not exactly, like this. If it is still off, then I apologise and I hope it didn't ruin your enjoyment of the rest of the video.
