  • JUST NOW: Gervonta Davis ANNOUNCED THE LAST CHANCE In HIS CAREER To FIGHT Shakur Stevenson
Lightweight champion (61 kg) WBA, Gervonta Davis has proven his toughness after crushing his challenger, Frank Martin, in seven rounds at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, last Saturday (16/6).
The victory was Davis' fifth success since winning him almost five years ago. At that time Davis won the vacant title by winning TKO over Yuriorkis Gamboa from Cuba in round 12 in Atlanta, December 28, 2019.
It is interesting to pick up the opponent Davis will face next. The 29-year-old boxer nicknamed the Tank was unbeaten in 30 matches, 28 of which he won by KO or TKO.
The first name that deserves to be put forward is Shakur Stevenson. The silver winner for the US at the 2016 Rio Olympics is now the WBC lightweight champion. The Stevenson vs Davis duel will be exciting, because it is the unification of the title. Moreover, they have complained to each other, challenged each other on social media.
Then there is the name Teofimo Lopez. This Honduras-blooded US boxer is the junior welterweight champion (63 kg) WBO. So, Davis must advance to one class if he is willing to duel against Lopez. Although he is often criticized as a money boxer, because he always demands very expensive pay for the grand match, Lopez is the opponent who deserves Davis. William Zepeda is the last name to be worthy of a duel against Davis. This Mexican boxer has a record as Davis, 30 duels without losing 26 KO/TKO wins. Zepeda's name is currently on the rise thanks to the explosive performance in the ring. One shortfall that Zepeda has, he hasn't become world champion yet.
Glaser alleges Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin did less than 200K pay-per-view
Turning to earlier today, Glaser suggested if Gervonta Davis doesn’t fight Shakur Stevenson next, he is most likely ducking. As to why Davis needs Stevenson, Glaser explained, “Davis needs a well known dance partner to sell PPV going forward”, adding, like when Davis fought Ryan Garcia in April last year.
Gervonta Davis is still undefeated, still WBA lightweight world champion and still one of the sport's premier knockout artists.
"Tank" defeated undefeated title challenger Frank "The Ghost" Martin with a vicious knockout in the eighth round to improve his record to 30-0 with 28 KOs. It was Davis' first fight in 14 months and he ended up looking like he never left.
Davis set up the climactic blow with an uppercut that stunned Martin enough to leave him defenseless for a left hook that put him flat on the mat. Gervonta “Tank” Davis kept walking Frank Martin down, trapping "The Ghost" in the corners.
Then, during the eighth round, "Tank" finally made good on being a Ghostbuster. He buzzed Martin with a left uppercut before knocking him out with a left cross on the jaw to retain the WBA lightweight world championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night. "Boom, that's (the uppercut) what it was ... the brick hand just finished it off," Davis told Jim Gray while reacting to the replay of his dynamic stoppage.
With the victory, the 29-year-old Davis not only retained his title after a 14-month layoff to improve to 30-0 with 28 knockouts, but also added to his highlight reel of electric finishes which arguably make him the most exciting boxer in the sport today.
The thunderous ending came after Martin had success in earlier rounds, asserting the jab and moving around the ring to frustrate "Tank" and even bruise the champ's face.
However, Davis increased his pressure by the round and repeatedly trapped Martin in the corners and against the ropes, delivering chopping left hands with each encroachment. That hot pursuit was really turned up a notch in the seventh round, before "Tank" unleashed his vaunted explosive power to hand Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) his first pro loss.
"It was a shot I didn't see," Martin said afterwards of the left hand that laid him flat on his back.
Here's how the entire Davis vs. Martin pay-per-view main card went.
At this point, it would be a miracle if a Gervonta Davis fight didn't end in a knockout. And it seems like they just get better and better.
On Saturday night, Tank put his WBA lightweight title on the line against unbeaten Frank Martin. After a slow start, which he later attributed to being "rusty", Davis shut everything down with an amazing knockout that will have a high spot on his career highlight reel.
Gervonta "Tank" Davis now 30-0 with 28 KOs
This definitely wasn't a perfect performance from Davis. We've grown used to seeing him start out cautious out of the gate, biding his time before finding opening for big shots. But he seemed to be particularly affected from not having fought since April 2022.
But after the first three rounds, Tank started landing really hard shots on Martin
