- These are clips from the first two versions of Jeopardy! The host is Art Fleming. The first show that you'll see is the original NBC version that aired from March 30, 1964-January 3, 1975. It had Don Pardo as the announcer who, of course, still does Saturday Night Live today.
The second is the revival that returned to NBC and aired from October 2, 1978-March 2, 1979. The clips of this version shown here are from the show's first episode. Also, I apologize for the quality.
EDIT: Thanks so much for the nice comments and I'm glad that y'all have enjoyed them. :)
I sure wish NBC had not destroyed all of these classic episodes!!! Such a shame that they will never bee seen again. Thanks so much for posting them. I just love those dollar amounts.
I have not looked through all comments, but one time they showed behind the scenes of the two men who worked the board. Those guys had to move quickly to pull the covers off the answers.
Thank you!! When I was a kid in Brooklyn, NY, I used to come home for lunch from school. At that time, Jeopardy was on at 12 noon on WNBC, I think. Thanks for a great memory from my past!!!
Indeed, Art Fleming WAS class, he was absolutely sincere and when contestants got the answer wrong, he was sincere in saying sorry. He WAS a professional! A talent that is missed. RIP Art.
I suppose Alex Trebek has now been doing this longer than Art Fleming, but watching this again reminds me that Art was the best--pure professionalism, with none of Trebek's pompousity.
Jeopardy! was replaced by Jackpot in the NOON/11:00 CST time slot. The Gong Show came two years later.
lol, i love the family feud entrance in the 2nd half
>>>>>>>>"(sidenote: can't believe Art Fleming was that tall (6'4", thanks to IMDB)"
I read somewhere that he played football. I think it was for college but I'm not exactly sure. Anyways, I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. :)
Wow awesome, thanks for putting this up! Didn't realize the show was so old.
I loved Art Fleming's personality and style back in the 60s. To me his version is the "real" Jeopardy.
Omg, look how small the money amounts are! Wow, thanks for the video!
Thanks for this. We all (well most of us) loved it.
Dude I love you, thanks for this, I needed it for my dads show.
This is a real gem. Thanks for uploading this one. Would like to see more of the original J! if you can.
I first saw Jeopardy! around 1964-65 when it aired at 11:30 ET following Concentration, then emceed by Hugh Downs.
Speaking of SNL, the original announcer for "Jeopardy!" from 1964-1975 was Don Pardo. You have heard him introducing the cast at the beginning of almost every episode since 1975.
I hope to see more clips like this,I hope at least a show or two of the REAL Jeopardy survives.
Always loved that DAILY DOUBLE bell! It's the same one also used on The Match Game (NBC 60's) (cue A Swingin Safari theme).
Answer: The original, genuine DYNAMIC DUO of Jeopardy! Question: Who's Art Fleming & Don Pardo?
I was born in 1969, but I do remember watching the last few years of the original NBC run and the entire run of the short-lived 1978-79 version. Shame on NBC for wiping out a majority of the original run!
Thank you, Art Fleming, from one of your many, many friends!
Yes. That's what the second half of the clip is from.
Wow, they let you sit down back then. How nice of them lol
There were VCRs by the early 1970s. Early Betamax machines, and other early consumer VCRs were on the market by that point.
I like the set of the '79 version!
Wow. This is really cool for me to see. Really, I mean it, too. It's a treat. NBC made a HUGE mistake not picking up Jeopardy 84. Take care of these pieces of cultural history. BTW, how many eps of the original are around and why can't GSN show them?
Not many. Videotape was so expensive back then the networks found it cheaper to write over old game show tapes (since not many networks found a need to re-run game shows). I don't think more than ten or twelve episodes are lying around... but there are a couple at The Page O' Clips...
10 BUCKS!!! If only I were alive so I could go on the show and win 10 dollars for an easy question!
Art Flemming was all class. Alex Trebek is not even in the same league with this man.
I know if I was a contestant, I would have preferred to be on the Art Fleming-hosted version of "Jeopardy," because Fleming was not full of himself like Alex Trebek, but mostly because contestants got to be seated for the game, didn't have to stand up with their hands on the clickers for a half hour.
Wow, she's from Roslyn, Pennsylvania? That's 5 minutes from me!
This is NEAT!!! What year is this clip from? Just curious:)
those lil pointy drinking cups ruled
just curious why your comments weren't put all in one post(divided into paragraphs of course). that's some nice info, by the way. thanks for that.
Last airing of the original Jeopardy in 1975
Don Pardo still going strong
You will look up on IMDB.com's Jeopardy! (1964-1975) page & read the review from willibwar about the show to be put on DVD.
Right! I went deaf hearing this.
I guess that means you don't read books that were written before you were born? It's before my time too, but we should be able to appreciate things outside of our own miniscule time frame.
Don Pardo too.
hey, it's Doooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnn Pardo !!!!
It is soon to be 44 years old come March 30 (my birthday, incidentally, but I will NOT tell you MY age, LOL).
ENJOY.
1964-1975.
Correct me If I'm wrong but, didn't Art also host an annual Quiz-Bee of some sort on PBS?
well i like alex trebek. i think he's awesome.
I really don't like the original Jeopardy because, well, the music sounds like something from the Rankin-Bass Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Also, I'm used to the electronic monitors giving the clues.
Don PARDO!!!!'
'74
whats with the horror music?
Another victim of wiping...
The current version is also better, in that it allows Alex read the ENTIRE clue before allowing players to ring in. In Season 1, they could ring in at anytime, but from Season 2-present, they had to wait.
If Art Fleming hosted the 1984 version, it should have lasted for only 10 years.
I don't think it's classic, that's like from another planet.
