    • Growing Moso Bamboo Fr...
    In this video I talk about the kind a bamboo barrier that I use and how important they are if you plant running bamboo. Concrete can be used but it will crack over time and will fail to contain bamboo eventually. Unless its poured very thick (wide), but then it will be a lot more work and cost more than using a durable and unbreakable, thick plastic barrier like this.
    If you have sandy or loose loamy soil and live in warmer climates, You will need to go deeper (up to 3 ft). Leaving a high barrier lip above ground makes it easier to see and prevent any rhizomes from jumping over it. Never put a barrier flush with the ground level.
    You could dig a trench and back fill with mulch or gravel and then trim the ryzomes once or twice a year. But that method would only be for smaller groves. Don't give yourself that much work. Just drop in a thin plastic barrier and be never worry about it again.

    Thank you for the info! I have to build a barrier now because bamboo trees are growing into my neighbor’s yard. I’ve got about at least 200 feet of barrier I have to put up, plus cut down all the bamboo trees in my yard. Fortunately, the neighbors are helping me cut down some of the trees, but it’s still going to be a huge and time consuming project!

    • @GrowingAnswers

      Doesn’t matter. Only matters how far you want it to spread. Whatever grows beyond that isn’t that difficult to remove if you don’t wait too long. Typically the roots spread as far as the canes are tall, but you won’t see new shoots emerge up from the full extension of the rhizome. So wherever the cane grows, you can expect the root to be extended underground at least 50% further away from it.

    Hi. Thank you for this video, it has been very helpfull.
    I wonder if you can help me with this, I have alot of bamboo growing in my yard, I bought the house 1 year ago and didnt realize how much care I need to give to them and now thay are takimg over, they have already taken over a plant and made it extinct in my yard. Now I have decided to install a barrier to keep them from doing any more damage but I have an issue, some roots have gone very far out from the rest of the bamboos l, like 20' away. What I was planning on doing is dig up a trench carefully so as not to cut the roots and then follow them and start digging up the roots that have grown in other directions and once I have dug all of them out I can rip them out and then install the barrier and know that theres no roots beyond the barrier and that I wont have any more bamboos popping up in places that I dont want them in. Though now I that I saw your video you said that if I just cut the grass thay will eventually die, if thats the case then I can do that instead of digging them up one by one and I can save myself alot hard work and sweat. What do you suggest?
    Thank you!

      Also, right now my bamboos are growing on an area of around 500 square feet and I would like to downsize it to 250 or so, how I would like to do it is install a rhizome barrier around the area that I would like to keep and just cut the rest of the bamboos and keep on cutting them until they die out. What I am afraid of is that since the area that I plan on cutting is very full of bamboos, it will be too much to kill just by cutting it and they will spread all over wildly trying to survive. Perhaps another idea I have is to install the barrier on the entire 500 square feet and then eliminate the bamboo that I don't want from within so they cannot spread, do you think that is necessary or you think it is fine for me to just cut out the ones that I like even though there are many? Thanks!

    • @GrowingAnswers
      @GrowingAnswers  4 года назад

      dovid pomerantz if it’s that dense, you won’t be able to do that method. You can either cut them out and then bury the area in 18” of dirt if you need to rent a machine to dig them out. Cutting only works for maintaining and managing new growth. An already established area will keep growing back since there are so many roots.

    I have a 3 foot trench lined with heavy duty plastic and small river rock. The trench was placed on my property line and the fence that leads to my neighbors bamboo.
    Guess what happened after 3k later, I am still excavating bamboo that made it they the trench and over the trench. I am on year 15 and a grand total of $5500 in controlling my neighbors bamboo growing my yard. . If you ask me, just get rid of itX

    • @GrowingAnswers
      @GrowingAnswers  3 года назад +10

      The depth of the the trench is determined by the climate and the type of soil. It will always try to jump the barrier no matter what. That’s where paying attention comes in to play. It doesn’t grow fast enough to where anyone needs to constantly watch it. Anything trying to grow over the barrier can be trimmed once a year. Twice at the most. In my soil (hard clay) nothing grows below 12 inches. I can dig anywhere in my yard and see a distinct line where roots from anything stay above that level. As far as the bamboo goes, I’ve dug it up to move it on several occasions and the runners are always in the top 6 inches. Below that the clay is too dense and anaerobic for roots. Bamboo in general does not grow fast enough (including the roots) to where it can’t be maintained manually. If it gets out of control it’s because someone is not maintaining their property. And also, if the wrong type of plastic is used it will crack and be useless. Concrete is also not a good option as it will crack and shift also over time. The location of planting it also matters. If the grass is cut around the patch it grows in and there is more than 10ft of grass surrounding it, it will never be able to expand. The soft new shoots that try to emerge in the spring get clipped while cutting the grass and the expanding runners die. In this climate I live in, the fastest growing bamboo takes several years to even expand and grow 15ft from the original transplant spot in ideal conditions. It is not hard to maintain at all. It’s harder for me to maintain my strawberry patch than my bamboo grove. In fact I’ve been spending most of my energy try to help it vs trying to stop it. The winter is hard on it and the deer destroy it too. I’ve seen it grow in many locations (properties) throughout the county I live in. It’s never appeared as though it’s growing out of control or invading. A lot of the places I’ve seen it grow don’t even use a barrier and the patches aren’t even that large. Some of them appear as if they were left and forgotten about. With my job I travel and work within a lot of properties so I have the opportunity to observe.
      No bamboo species is on the invasive species list for this state either. The only way it spreads is by roots. If it spread by seeds (annually) like certain plants, weeds and trees then we’d be in trouble. You can’t even take a cutting of it and get it to root. All the above considered, that’s why it’s not invasive. I’d be more concerned about my neighbors oak tree roots destroying my driveway or the tree itself shedding and clogging my gutters every year or the trees themselves falling on my house. Those are real concerns, but no one is stopping anyone from planting them. We as people accept a level of work and risk from nature. Think about how much it costs to cut and maintain a lawn. People spend 10’s of thousands on lawn maintenance over a lifetime. The cost of a lawnmower alone is a few grand for a good riding one. So is turf grass invasive? Cuz It’s certainly costly no matter which way you look at it. Id rather have a forest of bamboo on my property that costs nothing annually and doesn’t need cut every week than have a lawn. Because in that case, bamboo would actually be less work.

    *This will not work because:*
    1. Life of bamboo is beyond 100 yrs. So obviously it cannot contain it beyond that.
    2. The life of the company which tested it is not beyond 100 yrs.
    3. It will break down after 100 yrs. Then the bamboo will spread.
    4. Think of how much earth has to be dug up.
    5. Think of how much material you will need to buy & it would cost more due to thickness & high durability.
    6. Its good for landscaping companies. They put it on other people's property and its the owner's headache after 100yrs. Do landscaping companies think beyond 100yrs?
    *Its better to use clumping bamboo for fencing every feet than using running bamboo.*
    For running bamboo it would be better to:
    1. Dig a huge trench (1mtr deep& 1 mtr wide)
    2. Keep the trench as your barrier or boundary.
    3. Then plant the bamboo fence a meter inside your farm.
    4. Every month walk around the property in the 1mtr trench and cut out the bamboo roots coming out into the trench.
    *But all this is too much work. Its far easier to plant clumping bamboo very very close to each other.*

    • @GrowingAnswers
      @GrowingAnswers  3 года назад +2

      PlugInCaroo clumping bamboo doesn’t do well in this region. Clumping bamboo is a tropical variety. Also I see a lot of bamboo around that has no Barriers and it doesn’t spread nearly as much as it’s thought to. Honestly in a 100 years I think bamboo spreading will be the least of humanity’s problems. In this climate bamboo spreads very slowly due to the winters. So long as someone cuts the grass here, it will never spread. It has one chance to spread in the spring when it puts up shoots. Even without a Barrier as soon as the new shoots get ran over by the lawn mower, they are done.
